Forced movement question

By Magnum9, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi all, sorry to start a new thread but I couldn't find an answer w search.

I've just started playing 2nd ed and did 2 play tests on the introduction quest "first blood"

In one run I had the Ettin throw one of the heroes in to a water tile. The throw ability says "the hero counts as having entered the space"....

So here is my question... would the hero suffer 2 fatigue (as if forced move in to a water square)? Or would they lose 2 points of movement on their next turn? Or neither?

Neither.

The Ettin can throw a hero up to 3 spaces. Since it costs 2 movement points (mp) to enter a water space, the Ettin can only throw the hero into 1 water space (2 mp), and then perhaps 1 additional space that is not water.

In essence, as part of throwing the hero, the Ettin (through its throwing mp) is paying the cost of getting the hero into the water space. Water does not do any damage itself.

Now, if the Ettin were to throw the hero into a pit, for example, the hero would take 2 damage for entering a pit space.

Hope this helps.

Nothing happens, to move into a water space costs 2 points of movement, as they have not moved its not a penalty that will be applied.

What they they 'count as entering' means is that you could trigger an effect that requires a hero to enter a space like web trap.

you could thrown the hero into water next to his friends, trigger web trap to immobilize the group.

That is incorrect, the Ettin throws the monster 3 spaces, water is still counted at 1 space.

Whenever a card tells you to move x amount of spaces, you move that many spaces. Moving spaces is not treated as movement points. Players nor the overlord gain movement points when you are told to move x amount of spaces - movement points do not come into this what so ever.

Or you could throw a hero into lava and he'd take a damage, or throw him into a pit and cause him to take 2 damage for falling in, and (essentially) stun him.

Completely agree with BentoSan- "remove and place within X spaces" is in no way a move, and is not resolved by considering necessary movement points. It's resolved by counting spaces, the same way as you would for line of sight or other abilities. As such, terrain (obstacles not included) make no difference in counting spaces, and nor do enemy figures.

Hmmmm .... (checking rules ...)

Sigh. :P This is what I get for answering a question right after playing 22 straight hours of games (and the game was not Descent).

@Magnum9 ... sorry if the beginning of my answer caused issues/confusion.

@BentoSan & Zaltyre ... thanks for correcting my stupidity. I either have to continue drinking beer, go to bed and sleep, or ignore all posts to this forum until I have done 1 or the other. :D

My personal favourite tactic is to have the ettin throw the hero behind him as he blocks up the hallway then mob the hero with my monsters - an incredibly effective tactic. I did this on the last quest of the lair of the wyrm campaign. Picked up high mage Quellen, threw him over the ettins shoulder, the giant group of lieutenants and monsters mobbed him, webbed him and threw him into the pit all on a single turn, the heroes did not see it coming at all; from there it was a downward spiral with the OL taking the victory.

That's essentially how my LoR campaign ended as well (go overlords!)

Would it be possible to throw a hero into a lava space, web trap him thus forcing him to end his turn in the lava space and thus defeating him, if he has no way to remove the immobilize condition in that turn that is.

If a hero ends his turn in a lava space (without some kind of special protective gear) he will be defeated. It really doesn't matter how he got there- so yes.

Grease trap into lava is the number one reason my heroes avoid taking a single step in the direction of lava at any time unless they absolutely need too.

::evil grin::

Wow, thanks all for the prompt replies.

I've got to say I'm really excited about this game and it's community. Just digging around on these boards I can see that as far as the internet goes this is just about as pleasant a place as can be found lol.

Thanks again

Shut the f******ck up and go game ... :P :D

Wow so between you guys and the Bones miniatures forums I'm sort of kicking myself in the ass for not going full throttle on my board game geek interest years ago.

Both seem like stellar communities and I have a feeling I found a hobby combo that is going to eat up dangerous amounts of time. I'll also make sure to share pictures whenever my girlfriend starts up the painting madness

I've gotten to run the introduction from the base set a few times with a few people and we're comfortable enough with things to start up a 4v1 campaign tomorrow. I will def let you all know how it goes and thanks for the welcoming :::thumbsup:::

There's also the community at boardgamegeek.com. I hop on those forums as well since some discussions happen there that don't happen over here.

4v1 campaign tomorrow.

Have fun, this game has a lot of edge of your seat memorable moments :)

That's why I play standing up.

Saves wear and tear on pants. :P

Going to start another thread, have played a decent amount... but there is a major problem.

I've been kicking the tar out of my players. :( , they're pretty disheartened. I'm trying to figure out ways to do justice to the "Antagonist vs Story Teller" appeal of the overlord while not just crushing the player party.

Are you playing 4x1? Also, what campaign- how far have you gotten?
