Looking to get into this..How many core+expansions to buy?

By dantop83, in Warhammer: Diskwars

Hi, I was hoping to get into this so I can possibly play at Worlds. How many of the Core set or expansions do I have to buy to have "everything"

For example is there a number of units I can play max that would consitute a need to buy 2 of an expansion to have that "max" number?

I was planning on buying 2 cores because most people inferred there was benefit, but I wanted to get everything at once if possible.

If you want to do big battles with three regiments, and three copies of a given elite disc (bloodthirster...) in your army, you should go for three boxes, because some of these discs come at just one per box. Then you got "everything", but I suppose you can do well in normal games with 2 boxes.

I have been very happy with two cores and one of each expansion. This allows me to have great flexibility, but it does prevent me from completely maxing out the units. The maximum number of a given unit in a single regiment is three for small disks, two for medium, and one for large. Depending on how many regiments you choose to play, that dictates the total number of a given unit you could theoretically field.

Technically, you would have to buy three of everything to be able to max out most units in a three regiment game (and even then you would be short on many units from the core set). This seems like overkill to me, though, and it is rare that I max out a unit anyway. As an added benefit, not being able to max out allows for more tactical diversity and exploration of additional options.

In sum, I recommend at least two cores and one of each expansion--that should give you plenty of options without breaking the bank.

I was hoping to be able to field a competitive side, so is there much demand in the meta for playing 3 of those large units?

For example in X-Wing, Tie Swarms are popular so letting me know I may want to buy 2 cores and 2 Tie expansions to field a viable meta fleet is good knowledge.

Is there anything that is meta-viable or important today that would really demand more than one copy of expansions? For the time being I think I'll do two cores and one of each expansion, but I am just curious of what to expect. :)

First off, I should qualify this by saying that I have not been in any tournaments, and that the "local meta" in my area consists of me and about a dozen of my friends/relatives, so bear that in mind. I do read up on BBG, Sniper-Troll's excellent blog, and these forums, though, so I am somewhat abreast of popular builds, and I play quite a bit.

Organized play begins with two regiments, and uses three for the elimination rounds, so if you really wanted three of a given disk that would be when you need it (Thanks to MechaBri.Zilla for that catch).

The expansions are still new, so I would say it is hard to evaluate their impact on the meta-game at this point. I can only speak to personal experience. I do know there are a couple of more gimmicky builds that use more than one expansion. For example, the uber-impact orc builds that utilize as many doom divers as possible with boar boyz would require an additional expansion. Also, the dwarf gunline (another gimmicky build) needs two expansions. In my experience, though, most solid builds require only one expansion if you have two core sets to supplement them, but two expansions give you a slight edge in customization.

Most of the "tried-and-true" older builds (Double Thirster, Double Dragon, Armored Empire, Double troll/boar boyz) that were common in my local area all rely on two core sets, so that is why I heavily recommend two of those, and it is possible that in time two expansions will come to be seen as necessary. I kind of doubt it though. There aren't many expansion disks that I really want more of--maybe the Dwarf cannons and the Zombie dragon, but other than that, I am happy with what I have.

Hope this helps, but it is admittedly based on my limited scope of play.

*Edit: Checked tournament rules as recommended and fixed accordingly.

You may want to check the tournament rules, which are available on the support page.

I believe you use three regiments for the last few rounds.

I haven't really played competitively, but it seems to me that you'd at least want some versatility, so I'd think two cores and one of each expansion should really be all you need. However, I like to run armies with a good bit of variety (in my old Magic days, we called it toolboxing). I like to have a number of options in my regiments.

Thanks everyone, I decided to order 2 cores and one of each expansion for now...I'll just buy extra expansions later if I realize it actually become a necessity for whatever I end up running at Worlds...Assuming I can even play and the event isn't overlapping with another event..:/

Good luck!

I'm just going to be playing at home with my wife. I already have 1 core but am looking at the 2 expansions. Could I get by with just those 3 boxes, or should I get 2 cores and 1 each of the xpacs? I'm not looking at doing any tourney play.

For non-competitive play, you'll be just fine with one core, and one of each expansion.

Two cores provides more flexibility in army building, but is completely unnecessary, unless you really get into the game.

I would agree. Two cores is probably necessary for competitive play, but not casual. That said, I have not played competitively yet, and I still bought two cores. It gives you so many more options and really expands the army building quite a bit. If you can get another core on the cheap it is definitely worth it!

Of course, I am hopelessly and irrevocably addicted to this game, so if you aren't you may not want to spend the extra cash.

Awesome. Thank you.

So am I right that I am the only one here who went for three boxes each?

I think so...

I'm thinking about a third core, but haven't bit the bullet on that one. I do have 2 copies of Legions, and plan on getting two of Hammer. I don't think I'll go three on the expansions though. I don't play enough three regiment games to make it worth it. And, if I were to play more three regiment games, I think I could make due with 2 of each expansion.
