Darth Vader crew -after you perform an attack question

By kryzak, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Tried a search and didn't find anything in this forum. One quick question, that Vader crew card says. "After you perform an attack on an enemy ship... " I couldn't find anywhere to clarify if "after you perform an attack" means:

1. After rolling and modifying attack dice, or

2. After all defense dice are resolved and the amount of damage uncancelled went through.

Can anyone clarify? Thanks!

The seven steps of the Combat Phase are described on Page 10 of the Rule Book.

That's when Vader will trigger. Your number 2.

Yep, attacker rolls, modify dice, defender rolls, modify dice, compare and cancel, deal any damage cards and resolve, THEN Darth Vader does his thing. All the steps must be resolved for the attack to be consider complete and then anything that triggers "after the attack" happens.

Ahh, that's what I thought. It's just a new player asked me to show him why after "rolling the attack dice" is not "after the attack", and I couldn't really find any language saying that "after the attack" means completing all the steps...

As an aside, would Rexler be able to flip a Vader crit that had turned over (like Minor Explosion)? Both Vader and Rexler occur after an attack, though Rexler can only do it if he dealt the target at least one face-down card.

My assumption is that Vader's card would not be part of Rexler's attack and thus, even though it was dealt simultaneously to Rexler's cards, it would not count as part of the attack and thus would not flip.

The use of the word "you" on Vader's card indicates that the attack has come from the ship Vader is on, not Rexlar's. Therefore, Rexlar doesn't have any influence over that attack.

Card Abilities: Many card abilities use the word “you” to specifically reference that Ship card. Abilities on Ship cards cannot affect other ships unless explicitly specified by the ability.

If you are attacking with Rexlar, then Vader is not on the active ship and has nothing to do with it. The timing "After you perform an attack..." does not mean ANY attack, it is only for the active ship's attack, and Vader must be on the active ship to be used.

The use of "you" is key for a lot of things in the game and does not refer to the player, but to a ship.
