What ships should I buy?

By ivar9898, in X-Wing

Hello, im new to the game and I was wondering what ships I should buy. I already have the core set and the Falcon will come this week. I thought Imperial aces would be a good choice but I have still my doubts.

Regardless of what FFG tells you, you actually need ALL ships in multitudes to play the game.

Should I buy the ships from the first wave then or the core set again to get more x-wings and TIE-fighters?

It really depends on how you're planning to game. Are you going to be hosting games for other people with your miniatures? Do you want to play competitively at your FLGS (Friendly Local Gaming Store)? Do you have friends who are into the game too (or getting into it)?

A Core and a Falcon was also my first buy. A second was a TIE Advanced, because of Vader. However, it's a maligned ship these days, yet I still play it fairly regularly.

Basically you will have fun with anything you buy, but getting a second coreset and the x-wing and tie fighter expansions first is a popular way to go.

I would be methodical and try and get 1 of everything. All have things to offer. The transport and corvette are the most expensive so Id save those for last.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I really like darth Vader and Wedge, so I will propably buy them in the next weeks. I showed my models to a friend, and he liked it very much, so I hope he's going to start collecting to, and I'm already looking to host a dogfight event. And a second coreset would be handy to, because you don't have to buy the dice expansion.

This will probably happen with me, but because this game is so awesome, i don't care

It is your destiny!

One of everything is probably best. Going gradually, I'd recommend the X-Wing and TIE Fighter expansions first, then a second Core set. After that, it really depends on your favorite ships.

For me, two core sets was the way to go. It is less expensive than getting the x-wing, 2 TIE, anda dice expansion. Plus you get second sets of all the tokens and maneuver templates.

+1 on 2 core sets... very good value. Not only do you get another X and 2 Ties which you will use. You also get more dice which is nice cause even with the core you end up needing more dice then they give you! 2 sets of templates and range rulers are just nice for speeding up game play. I just pile them up for both players to grab what is needed.

Outside of that I suggest at least the following...

1 Falcon and Firespray, these are corner stones to lots of good lists

Couple B-wings, these are great "standard" fighters, along with X-wings

1 Xwing: great pilot cards, will flush out your x-wing fleet at 3, which is decent now a days.

Couple of Z95's: Good filler ships, decent pilot abilities, ordnance carriers

1 Tie expansion: Get all the pilots and cards, not to mention having 5 Ties is probably enough unless you find you really like swarms.

1 Int and 1 Imperial Aces: Interceptors are tricky ships, but 3 isn't bad to have and gives you all the good pilot abilities. Royal Guards are great "generic" interceptors.

1 Phantom: gotta try this ship, good cornerstone ATM

A-wing, Y-Wing, and HWK, Ewing have their place, possibly have some really great cards but if I had a limit these would be last on the list.

Bomber, Shuttle, Tie Advanced, Defender: All are pretty good, well except for the Advanced which is rarely used and only card you can't get else where is Squad Leader which isn't that critical of a card. These are pretty situational and based on preference.

I will stress that I suggest at least one of every ship if you like the game with the core sets, at least to try and see what you like. Don't be like me (50 ships)... I have 4 Tie Advances and 5 A-wings that I hardly ever use.

First of all, welcome aboard.

As others have mentioned, a second core set is a strong recommendation because you double your X-wings and TIEs for the cheapest price. 2 cores also gets you all the dice you need (the 3 attk/def in a single core set is kind of rude by FFG). However, now that there a plenty of release waves for this game, I think you could get by with buying a second set of dice and some various expansions as you see fit. You'll really have fun with just about anything you buy.

There are a couple other questions that could help people make recommendations:

* Are you playing with others that are already into the game, or will you be trying to suck new players into the game?

* Do you have a budget in mind?

* Do you want to focus on a single faction or try to balance rebels and imperial?

* Do you have intention of competition/tournament play?

So basically if you are just starting out and have no interest in playing the game competitively, buy whatever you like and have fun with the game.

You will find that at some point you should probably buy the X-Wing and TIE Fighter expansions to get all of the pilots for those ships. They are not all included in the core set. A second starter set wouldn't hurt either.

After that just have fun with it and get the ship you like.

That being said if you do have the plan to eventually make this a competitive game for you, at some point you will want at least one-three of every ship in the game. This will insure you have the right upgrades available, multiple builds, and so on. TIE Fighters and Z-95s are dirt cheap so you may want5-7 of these, maybe more if you let your buddies play with your ships.

I hope this helps! We covered this on our Episode 1 of NOVA Squadron Radio. You can check it out here if you like:

Welcome to the game :)

I'd say most everything you saw already is pretty good advice.

But there are 2 very important questions to ask yourself first.

1) What's my budget?

2) Do I want to play only one side?

What you buy depends a lot on your budget, if you can only manage 1 new ship per month then that's going to change the order a good bit, then if you could swing 3-4 ships every week.

Many of us collect and fly both Rebels and Imperials, but doing so is not at all necessary. If you can afford, it I'd say it gives you the most options but if you can only manage one side then that changes things.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I really appreciate your help.

To answer the questions,

-I don't have friends who have ships on their own yet, but one of them already played it a few times with me today, and I have a appointment with another friday, so I hope they are going tobuy the core-game at least.

-I'm 15, so I can afford 2 little ships or 1 big ship in a month at my opinion.

-I want to build a fleet of both sides, because they have both cool abilities, and you can use upgradecards on both sides.

I hope this answers you questions!

If it will be your job to bring all of the supplies to play the game, I can not recommend a second start set enough. Just having enough dice and an extra set of templates will be a life saver!

I think I'll second dandirk's advice. If you think you'll want to own three X-Wings and five TIE-Fighters, make a second core set your next purchase. If you're not sure yet, give a B-Wing and an Interceptor a go. In either case you'll be able to play sixty or so points, with a little bit of variety.

If you or someone else plans on flying a 'TIE SWARM' then a second core set is a great buy. If those ties are going to sit, then not so great. I see nothing wrong with friendly play sharing a damage deck. Extra dice are nice though.

For the rebels, an X-wing plus the Falcon is a great start for fun play. Basically add in one more rebel ship and you can make a strong 100 point list.

I'd recommend picking up another X-wing for the different pilots. I'd recommend AGAINST getting A-wing or B-wing simply because a 'Rebel Aces' boxed set with both of those plus some MUST HAVE cards for them is coming out soon.

It is a tad harder to build up the Imperials. Imperial Aces is a great choice, but IMHO it takes a fair amount of skill to really capitalize on the power of the Tie Interceptor. It's fun for both sides to have a big ship, so Slave-1 (Firespray) or Shuttle are good choices. A lot of people get Tie Advanced for Vader...and it is fun to have one fighter on the imps side that has shields, but as most will tell you Vader is okay (but not great) while the other pilots just really lack for the points they cost. With that in mind I'd suggest Tie Defender, while not an iconic movie ship, it is a very solid choice for a new player thanks to good stats all around.

I just gave a friend his first free taste and he's now hooked. He was wondering where to start and after some thought i decided to just recommend him starting with wave 1 to keep the rules and cards as simple as possible. He ordered $100 worth from CSI for free shipping.

Core x2

X-wing

Y-wing x2

Tie fighter

Tie Advanced

Probably wouldn't have bothered with the 2nd Y, but it got him over the $100 requirement.

Already some great advice in this thread. X-Wing and TIE Expansions should definitely be on your list. The named pilots in those expansions are very strong. A falcon and a couple other rebel ships makes for a good list. B-Wings are formidable so you could pick one up and then when you get rebel aces you'd have two. Imperial-wise, aces is nice, but starting out I'd probably recommend a Defender just because it's a little more sturdy. Firesprays are fun to fly and have served as the backbone of many good lists. Vader is an iconic pilot, but the TIE Advanced really isn't that great of a buy points-wise.

I will let it know when I bought a new ship. I heared there's a gamestore 20 min. away from my town, so I will take a look there this week. If it's cheaper then amazon I will buy a ship from phase I. Probably the TIE-advanced (swarm tactics), wedge's X-wing or a 2nd core.

Thanks again!

Hello, im new to the game and I was wondering what ships I should buy. I already have the core set and the Falcon will come this week. I thought Imperial aces would be a good choice but I have still my doubts.

welcome to the game ivar my recomendation on what you should buy is according to what faction you like but however every one has there own strategy to the game. i am a rebels player but i am considering buying the rest of the imperials faction ships so that if any one else wants to play they can. Plus i have a son and when he comes to visit i want him to be able to play as well and from what i have been reading the imperial expansion packs have many cards that dont come with any other expansion pack. so depending on what upgrade cards you have that aren't faction specific it should make for a really awesome way to play the game.

I'd stay away from the corvette and transports as they only add a few mission options to normal play. They can be fun, but for the same price you could add both two medium ships or several small ships and increase your versatility.
