:: Charachter Datalogs! :: 2 Versions (assuming FFG approves!)

By plainolewhitey, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

This was inspired by Legend of the Five Rings Character Travelogues - which I have found immensely useful.

There are two types of files: A straight ordered pages PDF - Page 1 to 40 for full page printing or manipulation to get to work with your printer - and a booklet style PDF - for double-sided landscape printing and then stapling down the middle, to be folded in half.

Either way, I have also included a JPG Front/Back for the landscape 11"x8.5" so you can select out the appropriate pages and print the cover separately on a glossy or matte photo paper if you like.

I use a HP 8600 Plus, that can print on both sides, and then I use a paper cutter and personal binding machine to make the booklet, but that's not completely necessary.

Plenty of note space pages and extended fillable custom skills area. Extra questions to help you flesh out your character as well, all in one convenient bundle!

Depending on your printer, it may take a few tries to figure out which file works best for your printer and the best way to produce it. If there is any way I can help, let me know!

Aaaah.. *Character* Datalogs. My 8th grade English Teacher Mrs. Thompson is dying right now.

This is def. interesting.

This looks rather interesting.

It actually looks great in my opinion.

I'll test it by printing and using it for my group.

Very nice. I printed a copy this morning and shared the thread with my group.

If I might suggest: my group uses a sheet based off the beginners game that has a column to list your dice pool for each skill and attack. Perhaps the career column could be shrunk to include that.

looks great, this is a very interesting idea.

going to use it in my group and see how they like it.

Please do keep the feedback coming. I'll rework it on a month when everyone has had a chance to use it. If an idea is moderate to complex, please provide a pic or something for me to reference, just a scratch diagram on paper will be fine! It's hard to visualize what is being requested at times. : )

Glad you're liking it!!

The 2nd link isn't working for me.

Neither of the image links are working and the 2nd filedropper link gives a 500 error. Looking forward to taking a look at these though!

Neither link is working for me.

Hm... I'd cut out all of those pages of notes in the end, and maybe some of the less important written up info. At the least, I'd post it as a separate link, if not updating the whole link (not saying you should update the whole link; I'm sure some people like having 20+ pages of notes for their characters, it's just not my cup of tea).

Plus, if it isn't distributed commercially (A.K.A. nobody sells it), then it's fine for anyone to use. We already can find the standard character sheet on the homepage; what harm is there in allowing there to be more in depth character sheets that can be printed as booklets?

Also, it might be nice to create a GM's Handbook, where the GM could create notes on Adventure ideas, write out Nemesis stories and stats, and put down NPC stats. Right now I just use a standard spiral notebook, but a notebook with Star Wars printed in every corner would be nice.

I prefer to utilize something like a TiddlyWiki for character logs. Let's me organize things via Tiddlers and lets me link tiddlers together. That way information isn't just randomly put down in a flat journal. Like, create a Tiddler for each NPC you encounter and flesh them out with information over the course of time. Add tiddlers detailing locations, gear, etc... Easy to share as everything lives inside a single HTML file that can even be posted online to let others see it and read through it.

Anybody know a good free hosting site that's easy to access for these files? Sorry to those who are having trouble downloading. When I find a better place I'll update the thread.

I put the note pages in bc I lead more 'Role'playing than 'Roll'playing - it's important for people I GM to keep notes on clues and conversations as they might be of use later, as well as planets and information about the places visited. I should have an option with and without though. Good thought!

Here's the standard thing I say to pretty much everyone who shares something cool that we're supposed to print out: don't make any page primarily black! It uses way too much ink and distorts the paper. The back page looks cool and all, but I definitely wouldn't print it out.

In fact, I learned the hard way with my character generator that most people don't want to print out anything full-color; they'd much prefer a more simple, streamlined, and (mostly) black and white version that won't suck their ink cartridge dry. That's why I give them a choice of two different versions of all my printed sheets, one full color, and the other "simplified" (mostly, but not entirely, black and white). You might want to think about providing different print versions of your data log. For me personally with my generator, I only use the full-color version when creating a PDF. When printing anything, I always use the "simplified" version.

A couple of other observations:

  • The PDF sure has a lot of blank pages in it. Is that intentional?
  • I liked the holovid design for the character portrait :) Very clever.
  • Most of your home-made note pages look like... well, like they were designed using Notepad (or the Mac equivalent). You might want to consider re-designing them using similar fonts, graphics, and color schemes that the character sheet and other pages use.
  • Once they're re-designed :) you might want to make them form-fillable. In fact, it would be great if all of the pages were form-fillable so you wouldn't get stuck having a cool character profile with everything filled out by hand with a pen.
  • At the risk of sounding self-serving :) users of my generator might greatly benefit from this if you included a version with just the "notes" sections (form-fillable, of course), as the generator prints out all the other sheets itself. It doesn't, however, have the in-depth personality profile that you provide.

Good point on the simplified version. I can definitely remove some blank note pages as well. I'll work on making pages form-fillable, that's a good idea. I did use 'System' font just because I thought it looked 'data-padish', but I can definitely find a more attractive font.

Great input so far from the community! Thank you, and keep them coming! I'm not a person who can't take criticism. I just enjoy making a nice product : )

Just as an example of what I was talking about, I mocked up the top of your "Contacts, Allies, and Enemies" page. All I did was borrow some design elements from the character sheet so it looks like it belongs to the same product. You can get fancier than this if you want :) This is just a quick rendering.

Oh, by the way... if you want to get close to the character sheet font, find a free version of Teuton. That's the closest match that I've found.

I like it. I'd like to see more of it. Although I do not play in meat space, this sheet should be easier to adapt to widescreen use for online play than the stock sheet.

When the time comes, I'd be happy to help you make it form fillable. I have the technology.
