YEAH, it's still a bit early for this topic, but given what I would call the highly popular choice of making scenic asteroids (out of lava rocks or sponges), I'm curious if anyone's got expertise to share or ideas so far about how you're gonna make your scenic space debris in all its potential 3D splendor.
Has anyone given thought to 3D debris yet?
I recall a couple of posts a while back where someone with some "spare" models dismembered them for the purpose of creating some space debris, I'm sure someone will link the thread.
Edited by Mace WinduIf you're refering to Rodent Masterminds debris.. he molded those parts so he didn't have to destroy the ships... he did a great job on those...
I made some asteroids out of lava rocks that fit on top of the asteroid tokens, they look great but we almost never use them because you have to remove them often to maneuver and measure.
Yeah, I just found a picture of it in this thread:

Jon Kerr had a similar thing going:

And they're great work. But they're used as asteroids. They aren't designed to be (and don't have the feel of) a "debris field".
Maybe I'm splitting hairs too much.

This is the closest I've seen to what I think I'm looking for, only because FarEast used wire to achieve the floating effect for smaller asteroid bits.
I've tried a game with 3D asteroids, and although it looked good and made it tricky to fly around, we couldn't actually overlap them. Might need some redesign before we do it again. It does give a great aesthetic look to a game though.
My first batch of 3D asteroids made the crucial mistake of not being removable from the base.
Second time around, knew better, did better. Now we don't run into problems trying to overlap the asteroids, so long as we're careful when we pluck them and plant them again.
I made asteroids for my SFB games about fifteen years ago out of lava rock glued on stands. I dug them out and use them for X-Wing. I just set them on the regular asteroid tokens and move them off is they're in the way.
I also did 3d asteroids using lava rocks. I drilled in sticks with magnets and simply glued a washer to the asteroid. So if you have an overlap, just remove the rock above, and re-attach when done. They look quite cool, and I have a few different sizes of plastic sticks so they can vary height, if one wants. Very easy to make (if you have the lava rocks and magnetic toys laying around)
ExpatSmuggler gave me a set of custom asteroids he made as a reward for giving him the closest game he'd ever fought (my scimitar squadron with 1-2 hull left v. Han Solo 1 hull, came down to a dice roll, Scimitar won). They're really cool.
Technically, you are not allowed to modify your asteroid tokens in any way. I have seen lots of stuff. The best I have seen is lava rocks on circle bases that you put down on top of your asteroid tokens. No TO can complain about those.
I have something in the pipeline, finished all the sculpting, should be pouring the moulds tomorrow and have some pics by the weekend...fingers crossed!
I'm all about 3d obstacles.
I made a set of asteroids actually a few months ago. I put magnets on both the stick and the base so that it could easily be removed when overlapped.
I should post some pictures at some point.
