Casting my pilots!

By Lord Ashram, in X-Wing

Can we not throw ~phobias around for no good reason? There was nothing transphobic in a remark regarding the cast of Monty Python dressing up as women. They did it, and they did it not to be transphobic, but for comedic effect, something which has continued to be a comedy staple for the intervening decades. If we want to analyze why we laugh at crossdressing performances and ask whether or not that is rooted in some deeper transphobia at a societal level, well, okay, but we might want to take a good hard look at drag acts as well if we're applying that analytical lens. However, given the initial post, there's no reason to suspect anything akin to any kind of bigotry at work. It's a comment about using cross-dressing men to play women, which is actually kind of insightful considering that is how women were performed on stage in many places around the world for centuries because women weren't allowed into the acting profession. It's also clearly intended to be humorous, though I can see it as potentially being provocative as well for those people who are inclined to view strong female characters as a big deal (and I think my stance on that has been made abundantly clear). Funny? Eh... Provocative? Maybe. Transphobic? Nah...

Do not tell me, a transwoman not to use the word transphobia. In fact, just stay out of the same galaxy as me.

When you have a thought, instead of speaking, just take a deep breath and say nothing, privilege.

So glad for the helpful reminder that the only thing of value in this community is the actual human beings in my local area. If any of you disgusting people are local to me, have the decency to approach me at a local game store at your earliest convenience. I wish to escalate.

So, we've somehow managed to go thoroughly off-topic. It's times like these that I like to remind people to just use the report function and move along, rather than jump into ongoing hostilities.

Using minority status as a blunt instrument to silence discourse does far more harm to the cause than good. People can only understand and improve their behavior when they are treated with respect, otherwise they make knee-jerk reactions which are the exact opposite of your desired outcome. Given the place of the transgender community in modern American society, that is to say, almost-wholly marginalized, alienating potential allies is a tragic mistake.

To be fair, I know nothing of the expanded universe...I've never read the comics or anything, so I make up my own background to suit what I think the name would be:). The Baron Soontir Fel doesn't feel, to me, like a tough dude, but more refined:). And who says echo needs to be a girl? :)

I Soontir Fel came from a Corellian farming family, so he's not really the aristocratic british type. Christian Bale could fit the bill.

Really good choice. Definitely has the cheekbones for it.

I hate that Guy.

Hayley Atwell as Echo

I hate that Guy.

Pearce? Yeah, he's a pretty terrible actor usually, but he looks like Turr. My second choice was Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye).

How about a young William Hurt?

Well he looks ok, but he's an even worse actor than Pearce, lol. I can't stand him, he's so monotone and lifeless.

His Leto Atreides was still better than Pearce's Fernand Mondego.

Never saw that Pearce one, and I couldn't watch that Dune series.

Hayley Atwell as Echo

Hayley Atwell as anything. They could cast her as a Gonk droid and I'd be excited to see her performance. She's the best.

That is harsh!

awww .... why the long face ?

Sean Bean for Biggs.

Oh wait.....

But jokes aside, I see Cumberbatch as the Baron, or Thrawn.

Don't know about anyone else though.
