Echo: Male or Female?

By Explosive Ewok, in X-Wing

So here we go again.

In the preview article for the Phantom FFG released prior to Wave 4, Echo was referred to as he, while Whisper remained a mystery.

In the next article, written specifically on Echo, this time by a guest writer, we see Echo referred to as he once again.

It specifically says 'she'.

Alright. In any written text from FFG they have to refer to both the player and the pilot. In a perfect world, the player's sex would remain ambiguous while the pilot would be referred to properly (Luke as he, Kath as she). This isn't a perfect world and FFG sometimes refers to the player as he. Big deal. Who cares.

The problem comes when you can mistake a reference to the pilot as a reference to the player. Here, however, they are obviously referring to Echo as she.

So, what now?

Yeah, that's really confusing... i don't know.

My guess is FFG haven't defined it and like us different people assume differently.

If you think it's confusing, think how Echo feels

Echo is a dophin. ecco_the_dolphin___fanmade_cover_by_zavr

Phantom pilot gender is also a probability distribution.

Echo is a dophin.

But is Echo a male or female dolphin? Gender is the issue under discussion, not species! :P Stay on target!

Why not both?

Transgender? Why not?

Near human that is bigendered? There are weirder things in the Star Wars Universe.

Here's a better question... who really cares, and will it somehow affect your enjoyment of the game?

Because we have to have something to talk about :)

Right now, short of FFG saying something otherwise. I'm inclined to think that "Echo" and "Whisper" are more then just call-signs, they're code names for the pilot of those 2 Phantoms, who ever that may be, rather then a call-sign given to a given pilot. So "Echo" and "Whisper" can be either one, because there is no one person who's called either.

I have heard that the inclusion of female pilots helps some players to get their female family and friends into the game. Beyond that...I doubt it make one tiny iota of difference.

Thank you.

This whole "issue" is completely irrelevant. Tell you what, since FFG apparently can't decide, why don't you decide for them? Pick one. Accept that some people may have a different opinion and move on. It has no influence on the game whatsoever

echo is a hermaphrodite.. problem solved

Well I was going to point out the inconsistency with FFG"s typing by linking you their Leia card - but it appears they have fixed her on their website.

I have a physical version that still points out their inconsistency.

I'm just going to point out that "Echo" and "Whisper" totally sound like stripper names.

It's not an issue, but some people enjoy knowing the fluff, I know I've spent a fair bit of time reading about pilots I only learned of from this game on Wookipedia, some people like to write out their games as in character fight scenes and so on. In these cases while knowing the genders of these pilots isn't "vital" it is somewhat useful.

In the end there will be no definite answer unless either Disney decides to mention them in something or FFG includes them in an adventure for the roleplaying games, until then flip a coin.

Maybe he/she is both

Maybe he/she is both

Maybe they are hutts, which if I recall my canon correctly can change genders more or less at will.

i think that echo is a male cause it sounds manlier to me ;P and whisper sounds more feminin to me so i think that whisper is a she. but really guyz thiz discuzzion should end here and now. we could speculate 500 more years wich gender those both phantom pilots posses. and have still no clue nor a real answer to that ;P

"Let's say, hypothetically, you could have sex with the back end, and it's guaranteed to be the greatest sex you've ever had, but you'd never know if Echo was a male or female."
