just out of curiosity

By executor, in X-Wing

how much has your local x wing gaming community grown in the past year and a half now? i'm more curious about your regular player base that shows up regularly or semi regularly.. not the ones that show up once in a blue moon

back when i started in wave 1 we had maybe 4-6 people that showed up on a regular basis about one night a week

lately we've been getting an average of 14-16 players at our main store location that show up regularly with a few rarities and lately a new night has opened up at a different location and i've seen at least 6-8 new faces

i'm sure it also won't be long before we run out of table space and there will be people waiting to play on a regular basis

we also get a good number of people show up for tournaments only

there is also another store not too far away but i've never been able to make the friday nights and i hear they have a decent turn out of people as well

are there many of you still struggling since day one to get a solid player base?

are there any with player bases so high that the store can't hold regular nights without people waiting around to get a table?

Where I am (western Washington state) there is a tremendous player base. However, there are also tons of game stores running events. So while the local player base has grown, the regular players tend to get spread pretty thin between the regular events.

yeah at my LGS we have grown from 4 regulars to 6 regulars with 2 more possibles. so doubled in size just this yr which is gr8!'

I'm new to the scene in Arizona, but it's fantastic. Facebook group with 150 people. Though I'm headed to Waco Texas where I know of two people(myself included). Though to be fair, I am still new to the game and haven't checked to see if there is more. That said, the Dallas/Austin region seems to be fairly lively, so I'll probably be making some drives.

When I got the game in January 2013, the only player I knew was myself. I tried to find players among a community a bit slanted towards euro board games with nevertheless a good chunk of ameritrash fans and it was harsh. Those people move along games at breakneck speed from one to the other. They do not settle down to become good at a game like X-Wing. For some of them, the game is the core set and they're disappointed by its lack of depth, however fun the game looks and plays out for a brief moment. Then, they're back to their newest Feld game or fretting about this new kick starter filler game they're waiting after.

Still, persistence paid off. I always tried to go to board game meets, bring and demo the game out, call out players on BGG and a local province (Quebec) board game forum and little by little, I now have a 40 people strong Facebook page (not everyone has come out to play, some have already "virtually left"). Some play often, some are attracted by tourneys (store championship, assault at Imdaar, escalaton tourney). Some new faces I've crossed just got the game. Scheduling something regular is still hard though. None of the players are X-Wing exclusive, including myself.

On the other hand, I discovered The X-Wing module of vassal in March 2013. It has been a fantastic way to learn everything about the game. From its early 2013 status as a place where you might log in and find no one on certain days, it's now almost certain you'll find at least 3-10 people logged in, with peaks of 30 people. Mrfroggies has organized half a dozen tournaments in that time I've been there - they just grow without relenting. The ongoing one started with 100+ players.

When wave 3 was about to hit, the creator of the module was nowhere to be found, so the budding online community was in peril. I was coaxed into making the needed wave 3 update and I've been the chef editor of the module ever since then. I urge you to give it a shot, we have tons of tournament winning champions running around in there, including hothie, Paul Heaver, piqsid of the 101 formation flying fame, Mexican national champion, UK regional winners, Singapore, Malaysia, France, Australia, Germany and many others which I am forgetting. Noobs as well as veterans come there and there's no better way to be exposed to an endless number of ways to approach the game. Here's a guide to join this up: http://s93768914.onlinehome.us/xwing/

Well I've been trying to find places that are supporting it for about a year now. I've been playing for close to 2 years. I've had to struggle to find stores hosting xwing events even tho there are 4-5 stores within a 40 mile radius. Fortunately I found one hosting an imdaar event when that happened but nothing since then. I emailed and called multiple stores asking about doing game night for xwing but no one knew anything or never emailed back. Finally by chance I happened to walk into a store close by where I live to buy some sleeves and wouldn't you know it they had a banner above their register saying xwing on Saturdays 5-8 with prize support. Talked to the guy and he said they just started a week ago and that this past Saturday no one showed up. I told him I just hosted a tourney with 7 people and that I could easily get them in to play. So looks like I'll be able to play regularly on sats now and win some acrylic tokens (evil emperor laugh) smiley-sw022.gif

I jumped into x wing at the start of summer, and I already lead my FLGS league night, which has about 8/10 regulars.

The fact that you can go from newbie to strong competitor in 2 months speaks volumes to the game and it's creators

I live in Nagoya, Japan. I think there is one player here .. But his wife throws some dice with him if he does the dishes every now and then.

good luck in getting your group started.. even when we first started out there were the odd nights that i was also the only one to show up or there would only be one other person there.. but be persistent

everyone has their own lives to attend to and it can be hard to please everyone but try and connect the best you can and find out a good day that works for everyone

Ya exactly fortunately I have 6 other friends that play so even if I couldn't find events to go too we usually play at least once a month sometimes 2. I actually placed 8th at the imdaar tourney and the last game I played was actually for my 8th place spot or 2nd which would have put me at the finals table. I was bummed cuz that was only my 2nd event in 2 yrs. the other was a store championship when I first started where I got 11th out of 14 :( so I have really been wanting to win some stuff from ffg so now hopefully if we get a few people in there I'll actually have an opportunity to get some stuff. I honestly don't care if I win I just want to at least be able to play and have a shot instead of searching and searching for a store that even does events. It seems like all the stores here focus on net runner, commander something or other, magic and attack wing. Rarely an xwing event will pop up. They do have a miniatures open night but there's nothing dedicated to just xwing. Hopefully this store will keep it going.

@OP - My experience has been very similar to yours. We started with basically 4 people in late November of last year and have grown to easily 20-25+ people every Friday, with an additional psuedo-league on Tuesdays which attracts around 10 ppl weekly (there is some overlap). We attract new players every week (it helps a lot to have a large group parallel to FNM).

I hope that we continue to grow!

That sounds a lot like my LGS, their are two and i go to both, but i can never make the one that has friday night tourneys.

Edit: And mine also has about 14-16 players.

Yeah, Vassal is great if you don't have many people to play with in real life, or even if you do it's still great.

i just got into this game about a month ago. The store support is a bit light as most push collectible card games or Warhammer. However it has been picking up. Found a local meetup group and there's anywhere from 2-6 folks who show up 1/week at a store about 30 miles from me. On the downside few if any stores host official tournaments. The one store I know of that had a regional tourney had the store manager win showing up late for his own game and then running out the clock (4 space cows, and then several minutes to decide how to dial them, rolling 1 die at a time nonsense) , gave himself a buy, etc. and having regular player who was on time sit out with a buy when he wanted and could have played instead. I suppose that was legal, just not my idea of fun.

I also have been trying organize a group for a tournament and campaign but it has been herding cats in space so far. :D

Most other players I have encountered as very casual and relaxed which is nice as it avoids the pitfalls of rules lawyering that I have encountered with other games. I also found a closer store with players who drop in, just nothing regular yet. Space mini-wise Firestorm Armada is being pushed harder there.

There is a sizable Star Trek Attack Wing group though with about 2 dozen members.
