TIE Avenger speculation

By sedarine, in X-Wing

Turrets got you down? No problem.. My speculation is that we will see the Avenger one day.

Stats? I think we'll see 3 hull like the interceptor as well as the three attack dice guns. Now the trolling...if they give it the canon shields it'll be four shields. It's mentioned as being more maneuverable than the A-wing and Interceptor...is it possible we'll see a 4 die agility?

And last, but certainly not least: what better time and ship for the roll out of the tractor beam? So a system slot is in there as well as at least a missile.

And now that I've tossed that hand grenade, imma make some popcorn...lol

Disclaimer: I'd love to see this ship...but will we get it in all it's canon glory? Will the empire get an Avenger test pilot shenanigans card? I hope so!

Might as well see if we can get this thread to 150 pages too. For all the good it will do since it looks like Disney has mandated Rebels/TFA only going forward (with the possibility of Rogue One, I guess). Honestly, this was one of the best looking ships from the "EU", and it amazes me that they never found a way to work it into the game, even though they got the fairly daft looking Defender into it, and then worse, the extremely daft looking TIE Punisher, lol.

Until then, I guess I will stick with the 3D Printed one they forced me to buy and play as a Defender/Advanced.

That Avenger looks awesome! That is how they should look. Looks like a mean interceptor/advanced.

It's a nice looking model for sure. Mel's Miniatures on Shapeways makes it, and if you get the highest quality version it's a little pricey but you won't be disappointed. Only needs the tiniest bit of cleanup and sanding before painting. Probably looks better if you don't accidentally botch the paintjob like I did. I've been meaning to strip it and re-do it but my hobby time is limited these days and what time I do have is so compacted with 40K stuff (I have a blog about True Scale Space Marines and other conversions including the new Genestealer Cult).

We use it to substitute for a TIE Advanced or sometimes an Elite Interceptor when we play Heroes of the Aturi Cluster.

When I see those pictures ... WOW ... I am going to need a few of those ... The probability that we get them from FFG is so low ...

If it's not a repaint of an H-shaped TIE, I doubt we'll ever see it :P

I would say the Avenger has a much greater chance of being put into an FFG game than our beloved non-TIE...

Even I, as an Imperial fan, was uncomfortable with the power creep. Oh well, you would need really OP ships to complete those inhuman last missions...

Nah, Avenger is really enough for all those missions, though you don't capture anyone in an Avenger. :D

Sure it was enough. Those levels also were enough to make me want to kill my computer by dumping ice into it. Cheating b***

Space sims might have killed one logitech stick every six months on me, but come on, it just TIE-Fighter. not the death star attack. (which was easy too when you just ignored the trench and attacked the exhaust port with a dive from above)

I guess it could be my fault but i always have it set to hard and i go for every objective. In the mission you use an interceptor vs crap loads of avengers, i never gave orders to my wing men.

Man, I killed so many TIE Advanceds Avengers with my Interceptor on that mission! Maarek PS 8 my a$$...

In the novel / players guide, he actually runs away, i don't remember him killing Avengers, but he did cause them to kill some of there own side.

PS8 sounds good, it would be the same PS they gave Poe originally. PS9 Poe is just silly. He does things in his X-Wing which all the other PS9 pilots do in freighters. Han in his Falcon, Anakin with his G9 and Dengar in his Jumpmaster. Though we got this whole inflation on PS9 pilots anyway, so I guess it's fine and Stele in a Avenger should feature as well PS9, was imo his best and signature ship anyway.

Hmm, I would rather adjust the maneuver dial of this ship and keep the PS ... or else the inflationary PSing will continiue.

Why would Maarek be a more skilled pilot depending in his vessel?

Avengers with mag pulse warheads. There's your capture.

Same reason why I fly better in an Avenger than a Gunboat. Experience. Knowing the ships in and out and having tons of flight hours in it indeed gives you an edge. And by now it is to late to worry about inflationary PS scores, PS9 is the new 8 anyway.

I'm not really fond of what role the Tie Avenger could serve in the current state of the game. The imperial answer to the Fang Fighter - The imperial Tallon ship? Title allows to spend target lock to tractor beam enemy ships in arc ... or something like this ...

I'm less and less concerned about roles in this game. What are the roles of the Quadjumper, of Sabine's TIE Fighter, or of the TIE Adv. Prototype? They all either share their role with some other ship in their faction, or have no classical role at all, but their own uses and possibilities.

In particular, the Empire isn't short on ships that fulfill the "arc dodger ace" archetype. But I don't think that is bad. It adds variety to a playstyle.

Even if the TIE Avenger ended being a clone of the TIE Interceptor with shields, it would have different pilots with different abilities, different upgrades, and different titles. At the very least, you would add a few more choices to the bag.

That assuming that the designers choose the lazy path, something they have not done in the past.

From a ship that appears 4 seconds onscreen before it blows up, they have created something that brings totally new mechanics like reverse maneuvers, stealing upgrade cards, and tractor-beaming-blockings. And that only by guessing what you can half see from the Quadjumper preview.

Given time, the TIE Avenger could result in a really unique and fun expansion pack. Remember that a ship isn't just its stats.

True words. Ship roles are not longer of concern. "Disney Canon" seems the only aspect that counts. And so I doubt that we will see this fine craft as an official expansion pack.

Seriously, turn it down a bit and get off the nostalgie googles, ship roles were not a thing even in wave 1, diversity of upgrades and ships was just so low that you got away with reducing ships to silly roles worked most of the time. People breach since ages that ships can not classified as being just justers or arc dodgers all the time and in all matchups.

As a matter of facts, my 'nostalgie googles' brought me to X-Wing. I see no reason why to take them off, now. TIE FIGHTER , X-Wing vs. TIE FIGHTER and SWG:JtL are my salt and pepper. And I am not alone, I guess.

Tell 40k players about model roles and they'll mock you out of the shop. Seriously, half the ships in the game are redundant or grossly missenterpreted by balancing. No reason Disney has to be stingy about better quality material, they own the copyright to both.

Ok I see your point. Maybe that was not the right way to say that I would like to see the Avenger with a better maneuver dial than the Interceptor ;) without overpowering the Avenger with an agility value of 4 in terms of defence rating ... ;)

Well ... if you build 40k models like seen on the pack-shots, its an automatic lose - at least thats true for the Imperial Guard (to hell with the new naming). So thats GW. Roles are still there, sort of. Very pragmatic roles. The fodder and the beast.

Try Orks or Chaos. We're they're just B-rated filler villains who twirl their mustaches while Abbadon fails more Black Crusades.

Honestly, I don't even know why a ship has to have a "role", and why ships can't have similar roles, and just be different in terms of stat lines. Like it's been said, there is so much overlap in the game already, I don't see any merit to the idea that a new ship doesn't fit into X-Wing just because it is similar to another ship. Especially in a game that has 2 X-Wings and 2 TIE Fighters in it.

X-Wing has quite a few variables for differentiation. Stat lines and maneuver dials alone create differentiation. A 3 3 3 2 TIE Avenger with a decent number of greens and perhaps the Sloop is easily a different fighter than anything else in the Imperial inventory. Its point value and pilots will determine its "role" and how it fits into lists, the same way a Defender and an Interceptor are used differently.
