The current state of the meta.

By nikk whyte, in X-Wing

It's not phantoms. It's not even falcons.

It's Bs, Xs, shuttles and TIEs.

Regionals in Atlanta yesterday. I lost to more Bs and Xs than anything. I ran into one phantom list (4x naked sigma) and he crushed my turrets list. But I was his only win.

I only encountered one falcon, and my falcon went toe to toe with it, and we double KO'ed on the same round. It came down to my Ys and his Xs.

So chew on that. The B-wing is only going to get better from here.

What was your record?

What was your record?

And your list?

On second thought, just write a battle report :-D

1-4. I forfeited my final match, called it a day.

Chewie, VI, falcon title

Kyle Katarn, moldy crow title, recon specialist, ion turret

Gold squadron pilot, R2 astro, ion turret

Top 4 still had 3 falcon lists, top 8 had 4, with at least one more finishing 12th. They were up there I promise. There are always a bunch of random builds in the rest of the field.

Ok, i will give some advice based on my experience.

First, it is totally ok to rant and vent off frustration. But after that, you calm down and think about it.

Did you really think you just lost because people were playing that kind of lists ?

How many times did you play that list against different type of lists?

Were you really comfortable with your list ?

So I'm going to point out an issue with your methodology. Because you went 1-4 you were going to be matched against lower ranked players as the day progressed. So what you played against were lists that, for the most part, were not going to place very highly at the end of the day. Which makes them not terribly indicative of the state of the meta, or at least not the part of the meta people are going to look towards.

No I don't know the overall results of the event, so you could still be correct, but not for the reasons you've stated.

I didn't read any frustration in his post. It seemed more of an "aha, see people aren't just playing Falcons and Phantoms".

The bigger point was the absence of phantoms. There were, from what i could see looking around the room during my games, about 6 falcons in a group of 59 players.

I lost because my ions were hot, but only dealt one damage at a time. Chewie went really cold for me until about game 4, which was the only one I won.

Put predator and a gunner on Chewie. He'll be a monster. Your list really is lacking in offense.

Coming to hard and quick conclussions after a day of gaming at the bottom tables about how the "state of the meta" seems to me as a way to justify his frustration towards the games he played.

Anyways, what JoJo said.

I don't own predator or gunner.

And I'm not frustrated. I had a great time.

I'm aware of the shortfalls of my list, but it was undefeated in 4 matches before yesterday. When the dice worked with me, I beat wedge, Biggs, garven, and a Z without losing a ship.

I think you're jumping to conclusions accusing him of ranting. Kinda rude.

This is what said to me that he felt frustated. I might be wrong, but that's the impression it gave to me.

Here's the thing about B-wings getting "better". The only B-wings that really come out better than they were after Rebel Aces are the uniques, who haven't exactly been showing up very often. The E2 mod really clashes with the point of taking Blues or Daggers, which is the cost. Ibbi and maybe Ten may actually see some play now, with some of the fun combos to be had.

A Regional is very much a marathon deal. I wouldn't make any judgments on him dropping in the last round.

The bigger point was the absence of phantoms. There were, from what i could see looking around the room during my games, about 6 falcons in a group of 59 players.

61 players (i know kinda splitting hairs on that) but i can name 9 falcon builds for sure. There were likely 1-2 more. Also i'd say about 6 phantom builds (and im not even counting that 4 sigmas). So still 25% of the field, and again, the falcons were all over the top. I said in the regional thread that the problem with the phantoms seemed to be that there were some more inexperienced players that played phantom mini swarm lists, which seems strange because it's unforgiving and you would expect them to be intimidated, but I know one guy that had a echo + ties list that said he had only been playing the game for a couple of months. I think the more veteran players that did choose phantoms, went too far with it and played both named phantoms, or one + soontir, and made themselves to open to falcons.

Fwiw, on the 4 sigmas, the guy didn't really fly it well. If you think about it, they should probably be trying to hit and run, sorta like corran horn. Avoid getting shot best you can, recloak in egypt, come back around so you get to decloak + shoot to get the drop on someone, since without acd like the big boy phantoms that 's the only way you could do that. But after the initial volley, the guy seemed to just try to furball it up with the phantoms like they were bwings. Didn't work out so well. To be fair that was a different match or two, he might've flown them better against the op.

One interesting thing though, not a single double falcon build. People have figured out that han or chewie deck out + z-95s or tarn mison + a z-95 seem to fair much better against the meta as a whole. Mr. Calrissian did not make an appearence.

I was there too, and I really think the fear of phantoms and the advent of C3PO brought a LOT of Falcons to the tables. I had 2 losses in the first half, so even though I won my last 3 and finished 4-2, I didn't face a lot of the top Falcons. Played one Han with Threepio in my last match, and I tabled him in under 30 minutes. I feel like my list helped me, BXXZZZ, lots of attack and lots of HP, but his Falcon folded in two rounds. I definitely heard a lot of my buddies (admittedly much better players than I) complaining about Chewbacca Falcons with Threepio.

The sigma pilots nuked my HWK and Y in the first volley, and then he took turns using 2 cloaked phantoms to block while the other two fired away at range 2. My falcon didn't have actions for like 3 turns.

One regional does not the meta make.

Small number statistics, anyone? :P

One regional does not the meta make.

It is a matter of perspective I guess? With the larger regionals, you can easily not see/remember half of the squads there. Obviously we don't have all 61 lists in front of us with the 70+ that were in texas and the 70+ from chicago, but I'd wager that the field as a whole was similar. Like one poster said, if you were 1-4 and like I said there were ~6 falcons in the top 16, you just didn't see them as much maybe. I personally feel like I'm seeing visible trends shaping up over the course of this last month, going all the way from the arizona regional through chicago/atlanta.
