New HCD starfield mat review...

By Wayne Argabright, in X-Wing

just a review on the new HCD starfield mat... http://www.miniaturemarket.com/hcd-starfield.html

just received mine the other day.. very nice and relatively cheap... its another one of those giant mouse pad material mats.. IMHO the BEST mats to play on... this one has subtle stars in the back round which for me is a GOOD thing as the other mat they made was waaaaay to garish.... not quite as cool looking as my frontline gaming mat but a heck of allot cheaper!! the only niggling complaint is that the edges "corners" are rounded so when you put two of them together for epic play you have a little chunk missing of play area on each side where the corners would normally be.. would be nice if the mat was a perfect square with out the corners rounded off... but other than that its a nice mat and now that i have those in I am going to try to "FIX" the original mats colors..lol might try my hand at making the planet that's on the original mat into a death star; black hole or something..lol

Thnaks for the review. I have been looking into this mat. Can you elaborate as to what the problem is with the edges?

I think the OP means the corners are rounded.

Is the surface fabric-like, as in wetsuit neoprene, or is it neoprene with some kind of smooth plastic surface on top? I play on felt currently and prefer textured to smooth play surfaces.

Thanks for the review. Some close up photos would be great if you get the chance.

I've got a couple "brighter" mats on the way, but I love the subtlety of this one, so I might pick it up eventually, too.

yes the "Corners" are rounded off. and as for material it is JUST like a giant mouse pad.. rubberized non slip backing. seriously it IS a giant mouse pad.. that's the best way to describe it.. will try to post some pics but lately this site keeps saying. "Not authorized to post here "or something along those lines...

No offense, but there are tonnes of varieties of mouse pad. Saying it's just like a mouse pad isn't helpful, but thanks anyway.

no offence taken but every mouse pad i have ever owned has been basically the same thing: fabric topped non-slip rubber pad... which makes the mat NOT slide around and it lays flat.. ships stay in place as well AND it deadens sound. also mat rolls up well and THIS TIME i actually received the proper storage box that comes with the mat from miniature market.. last time they shipped it with out the box....

Rounded corners? But why??? And it doesn't show them as rounded on the website. Weird.

Well, doesnøt matter, I am awaiting the arrival of one of these bad boys:

Their demo video is very convincing:

Do you have any pictures? The stock ones are pretty low resolution, unfortunately.

NOT legal for tournament play in X-wing. Matt measures 35 5/8" by 35 5/8", not 36" by 36". The rules are the only thing that matters, that is what I am told anyway.
