Greetings, which way to go?

By VarroZinn, in X-Wing

So, after quite a long time of sneaky lurking, I finally decided to invest some hard-earned cash (as a student I really donť have such opportunities often) into X-Wing as it looked like a game I would enjoy immensely. And guess what, I love it!

I already bothered many of my friends to give it a try and now we´re playing on a semi-regular basis and having a lot of fun.

In a short order I bought my first expansion - Falcon and later introduced Vader to my table. I guess TIE Advanced isn´t that viable at tournaments but at our table it was always fun to fly Vader around, scream "The Force is strong with this one," everytime he missed a shot and so on...

Anyways, I received a Firespray as a gift from a friend who found this game great too and am awaiting my second Base Kit next week.

So, hello everyone, I am glad to be on board of this ship, so to say and here is my first question. Which ships do you find essential? I´m wondering which ship to get next, although the associated time may yet change. What would be your priority "What to get first" list?

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Varro

so you have 2 base kits, a falcon, a firespray, and Vader?

I would grab a X-wing exansion, and a Tie fighter expansion. You could be done there, but chances are you will want more.

After that, probably an Interceptor+Imp Aces and A-wing/B-wing+Reb Aces should round out your forces nicely.

Then get a tackle box for transporting and storing.

I guess TIE Advanced isn´t that viable at tournaments but at our table it was always fun to fly Vader around, scream "The Force is strong with this one," everytime he missed a shot and so on...

This right here tells me you already completely understand the point of the game lol. A lot of your decision of what to purchase next is going to depend on where you want your builds to go. Are there upgrades you want for your current ships that you don't have yet? Get the ship that has them. Want to fly jumpy, hyper-mobile ships? Interceptors, A-Wings, Imperial Aces, and the Phantom are where you should look. Want something tanky? B-Wings. Personally, my priority when I got in to the game was Interceptors and the Firespray, but that might not be right for you. I will say that an X-Wing Expansion, and a TIE expansion are good ideas for anybody, because the expansions have different pilots than the core set, and therefore drastically increase the variety of play with ships you already have.

TL:DR: Go with your gut, and welcome to the game.

Thank you very much for your invaluable opinions! I will probably get the TIE Fighter and X-Wing expansions as suggested. I seem to enjoy flying both sides sadly, as that makes my desires harder to fulfill. But I usually end up playing Empire, as my friends always want to play Rebel Scum. So, perhaps after those expansion packs, I´l get myself Imperial Aces, as I enjoy outmaneuvering my opponent. Sadly it´s hard to outmaneuver a falcon as it´s shooting arc is without blind spot. Well, weˇll see. Now I have a lot of articles and strategy videos to check out!

May the Force be with you!

Welcome aboard! As others have said, the X-wing expansion and TIE Fighter expansion both add two incredible pilots to either side (Wedge and Howlrunner) and are great choices to expand on and make the most of what you've already got.

If you want to really open up the game and start enjoying different play styles though, I would recommend either Imperial Aces or if you wanted to keep both sides balanced out, a TIE Interceptor and an A-Wing. There's nothing quite like flying a PtL Interceptor...

You want a tie interceptor expansion for soontir fel one of the best pilots in the game, if the falcon proving an issue consider a tie defender using rexlar with the heavy laser Canon from the firespray you have and predator a card that comes with that ship it's great at causing crits.

What a warm welcome! Thank you for your input. Just one question that keeps bothering my mind: What exactly is meant by overlaping?

I am not a native speaker and am unsure whether I understand this rule correctly. Does it mean, that everytime you end up on an enemy ship base, you can´t make any action, but still can shoot. Do you receive a stress token in such case? And as overlaping, is it meant only in case you end up on a ship´s base or even when you should fly over that ship? Sorry if that´s stupid question, I just want to be sure, we´re playing according to the rules...

Over lapping is when you make a move but cant complete it because you would end up on top of another model, when this happens you stop the move when you make contact with the base, you don't take damage or stress but you can not take an action.

Also you cant shoot the model your in base contact with.

when your base ends its manuever on another ship's base, you move your ship back so that it's just touching the other ship's base and do not perform an action, you can still shoot, but not at the ship your touching (and he can't shoot at you), and no you don't get a stress.

Excellent explanation!

Just to add for clarity, you do get a stress if the maneuver on the dial was RED. For ex. If the ship was attempting to perform a red 4 K turn.

Oh and if you hit another ship you don't turn around if the move was a k-turn you keep your heading.

I would focus on one side, either imperials or rebels. I find imperials "easier" to collect once you have the mandatory 4 core Ties + 1 Tie fighter expansion, since you can pretty much get to use anything, and put a mini swarm on it.

first of all welcome arrr aharr harrr harrr well i dont know if u will keep collecting both sides or not if so then buy the x wing and one tie expansion for cool pilots like howlrunner wedge and so on ;P. if u want to play imperium then go with interceptors ^^ they are fun to fly but die really fast if ure unlucky with the dices but dats the challenge they bring ya >;P HARR HARRH ARR HAAARR *cough* hope u join the galactic empire *cough* cause its the hard core mode of this game *cough* ;)
