reinventing the wheel

By Boris_the_Dwarf, in X-Wing

As more waves and new ships continue to be created, I have to ask - when will we see updated versions of the characters that made this franchise what it is?

Not that there's anything wrong with the Luke, Vader, or Wedge we have already, but IMO they really lack the flavor of the heroes, and the presence of the Force (as far as Luke and Vader are concerned).

Here are some ideas I think could reinvigorate the original movie characters:

Luke - You may fire a secondary weapon without acquiring a target lock.

Luke - At the start of a round, choose 1 enemy ship. That ship must choose a maneuver on its dial that would bring it closer to your ship's current position.

Luke - Action: During the combat phase this turn, assign a number of hits equal to your primary weapon's current attack value to 1 enemy ship within range 1-2 and within your firing arc. Then, place 3 stress tokens next to your ship.

Darth Vader - When defending, enemy ships must discard 1 shield before rolling defense dice.

Darth Vader - Enemy ships at range 1 cannot roll defense dice against your attacks if you are outside their firing arc.

Darth Vader - When defending, the enemy ship attacking you receives a stress token after it attacks.

Wedge - If you spend your target lock, double the number of attack dice you roll.

Wedge - Each hit or critical you score when attacking counts as two hits instead.

Wedge - The first time your ship is destroyed, instead remove all damage cards from your hull and recover 1 shield.

I think the originals are still doing well dude. Do you think Wedge doesn't hit the table enough? Luke makes it into a lot of lists and faders problem is more the advanced than his rules.

He force thing is kinda cool, perhaps a number of force points each allowing you to reroll a single die, but really the game and it's pilots are pretty good IMO.

I can't speak to national/international metas or random venues In anecdotal location X. I can only talk about design choices from my own anecdotal insights. And my insights into the game is that there is a lack of recognition for the Force as a part of Star Wars in Space.

Luke tends to get overlooked when I sit down to build a fleet - even with my hypothetical epic lists which I will likely never play.

And "Darth Vader is a tier 1 piece," said no one ever.

Yeah Wedge gets some attention but there's an upgrade card that does the same thing now, so yeah.

i think those would be cool and add some movie style flavor, but would imbalance the ge entirely. as well as taking them from

OK (luke/vader) and pretty good (wedge) to why dont you have luke/wedge/vader

That's what point costs are for. :)

Too much focus is on tournament play, the game is in desperate need of Scenarios, campaign rules and 'Heroic' adjustments that make the named heroes live longer and even more fun! :)

Most of these, especially Wedge, are totally OP...

I really liked the awesome design of Jek and how his ability combos with his astromech so well.

Luke really doesn't work well with R2-D2 very well at all, well at least not better than anyone else does (e.g. R2-D2 on an E-wing is better).

The other thing that I was thinking about was how there are no keywords on pilots that could make new EPT that are keyword specific. This came to when I was building a Jedi list with Corran, Kyle and Luke.

Any to factor in both these ideas, what about something like this?

X-wing:

Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight

PS8. Experienced. Force Sensitive. All of your white maneuvers are green and all of your red maneuvers are white.

It's not like white k-turns aren't a thing now, with both Jek and Defenders having access to them. He also combos really well with R2-D2 which fits the fluff well.

I'd love for Jedi/Force Sensitive characters to have a card similar to Prototype Test Pilot to allow for multiple EPTs, but currently there is nothing to differentiate them from normal scrubs.

I think is a good idea, to get a new versión of pilots, and maybe in a new ship, when it could be posible, greettings.

i'd still like to see a few individuals in tie fighters.. tycho.. han solo.. biggs.. ect.

Here's a few upgrades I came up with that would make the game more "Star Warsy:"

The Force Will Be With You, Always

Cost - 7

You may convert all of your blanks to hits each time you attack.

Force Sensitive

Cost 3

Limited.

You may reroll 1 result each time you roll dice.

Knowledge and Defense

Cost 6

Luke Skywalker only.

At the start of the planning phase, choose an enemy ship at range 1. You may look at that ship's manuever dial after all other manuever dials have been placed. Then, you may change your ship's manuever dial. If that ship attacks you this turn, add 2 Evade results to your defense roll.

You may not declare attacks against enemy ships that haven't attacked you.

I have thought about this from time to time.

Obviously as time goes on and new ships and pilots are released some abilities will become better. They will have to get more creative. Add something new of they try to keep it going for however long. So it would make sense if down the road lukes ability becomes sub par in comparison to future pilots, which really it shouldn't be

For example farlander ability I feel would be better on vader or Luke. His ability is awesome

I wonder if down the road they just remake new pilot cards for the same ship they are already released for. Another Luke in a xwing, another vader in the advanced. Call it something like Jedi knight Luke or young Luke. This could also be a way to reduce our increase their cost and allow players to use different versions of those named pilots

Of coarse you can only use one named pilot per squad, can't have both old and young Luke together

Wedge comes back from the dead with near full health?! That would have to be absurdly expensive.

I say we make him 15 points

Oh you'll see revised Lukes and Hans.

Just give it a year.

Expensive? No way.

I say we make him 15 points

Ooohhh and give him 7 attack dice and a +5 holy sword?

Now your just being silly

6 attack dice

The seventh comes from his holy sword, he goes all 40k and flies up to people with it.
