Magnet Advice

I'm consdering doing the disk magnet and ball bearing ship mod as discussed by LeeCHeSSS and Osoroshii in the following thread: http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/102979-model-mod-to-make-ships-rotatable/?hl=rotatable

Is there a reason for mounting the magnets underneath the ship? I believe you get a greater range of movement by mounting the disk magnet to the back of the ship and the ball to the peg post. Perhaps the magnets aren't strong enough to hold the entire length of the ship?

possibly balance issues and it will stick WAY out in front of the peg.. might look odd..

It looks awesome, but maybe it be annoying when you move the ships especially when it fall, greettings.

For the B-Wing the ring is on the back of the ship and supports it just fine.

This may not be that helpful, but it's my personal experience, so I'll share it -- think twice before magnetizing anything!

I kind of did it on autopilot, because I'm a magnet-hawk in WHFB/40K, and I knew it would be a quick, simple task that I already had all the materials for. And it was, but I regret doing it. Ships get turned around and face outside their arc, confusing you and requiring constant adjustment, and it makes it more difficult to pick the whole shebang up by the ship itself during maneuvering.

Magnets provide superior aesthetics, but from a practical gaming standpoint the default method of attachment is more functional. If the former is more important to you than the latter, then go magnet-crazy. But if you want your gameplay experience to be as tight as possible, think carefully before magnetizing anything, or try it out on one or two ships first and see whether you're content with the ramifications.

I 100% agree with what Gibarian said. I had an X wing that the peg broke on, so I figured it was a great opportunity to magnetize it, but it kept twisting left/right on me, and I hated it. If someone could come up with a way to make it just tilt L/R or nose up/down, then I would love it, but I could not stand the L/R rotation.

That said, the B wings are simple to do, two regular magnets and you have a rotating B wing that stays facing forwards.

I can see the word of caution. The modification is not for everyone, and it is a perminate change. I did start out with just one and played with it for a little bit. I was ok with the spinning left and right, as I also have weighted bases with a washer and black silicon. This helps with being able to correct the spin very quickly. The weighted bases I would recommend to everybody. The silicon has just enough tackiness to it that it helps prevent accidental bumps.

I fail to see how this will prevent rotation L/R. Please explain what's preventing (a non-B wing) from rotating on the face.

With a block magnet there is no rotation as you would have the straight side of the disk to the straight side of the block. there are no curves for the ship to curve around. at most you would have up/down movement. of course now that i think about it i would have to think of a way to have the ship sit straight.... when i think of one i will definitely post it

ooh got it!! the disk is glued to the ship. the block is glued to the base stem in a diamond angle like this --> /\
then glue a very thin flat piece of plastic on top of the point wide enough for the ship to sit flush but not wide enough to hinder the ship placement on the angles. kind of like this /T\ it is flat but with how strong the disk magnet is (i have used it on my gundam models for laser beams. it shouldn't rotate much at all.

I disagree with the left right rotation problem. I had more of an issue with the regular pegs. My regular plastic pegs from the factory had a slight tilt, and as they wore down, it seemed to get worse. They do move now, but I can move them back easily, and it is a blessing for tight spaces and bumps. I recommend the magnet route for everyone.

Thanks everyone. I will play around with the Phantom I have that has a bad peg. I'll tinker with mounting the magnet on it's back and post back my results.
