Utterly Destroy a Pilot...

By That One Guy, in X-Wing

It's difficult to quantify "what Biggs should cost"

because his true cost reflects both the durability and the damage output of whatever he is protecting.

Because Biggs exists, from a game design standpoint there are strict upper bounds to what rebel ships can be allowed to do while retaining balance. For instance, a group of Phantoms protected by Biggs would probably be disgustingly overpowered.

Every future rebel ship design needs to keep Biggs in mind. Hence, he warps the design space.

That's my interpretation at least.

Biggs. He's a rookie mistake in game design. FFG was doing great designing a dog fighting game and then one of the devs who played too much WoW came up with the great idea to insert a taunt mechanic in the game. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if it took an action, or only affected one ship. But a global, always on, passive?

That's just lame. No it's worse, it's lazy, and stupid, and ugly game design. I agree with the above poster who compared it to Lash. It's the same kind of hamfisted design you'd see from Games Workshop...and that's pretty dang bad.

So is R2-D2. Very lazy, sloppy, ugly GW-like design.

None. Each pilot brings a unique set of tactical challenges to defeat them.

You may as well suggest that the game just be Academy Pilots and Rookie X-Wings, just to keep it "fair". Or something.

Oh make no mistake, I don't feel any of them unbalance the game. I just wanted to a) see what pilots people hate dealing with and b) see which faction got the most votes. So far there are far fewer people saying Whisper, and I completely failed to forsee this many people saying Biggs.

I completely failed to forsee this many people saying Biggs.

If Biggs is a valid target for elimination, then you must choose Biggs. That is the rule.

If he has been eliminated, then I would move on to Luke Skywalker. The Rebellion doesn't stand a chance without their golden boy, and we can be one step closer to crushing the Alliance and redirecting our resources to better endeavors.

I remember lash. I don't remember it being any more broken than any of the other power armies though. Remember holofield falcons with harlequins? Remember destroyer chucklefuck Necrons blowing everyone off the table? Or 6 carnifex Tyranids? Remember when codex orks dropped, and green tide just autowon against most everyone?

I mean sure, lash was pretty powerful, but it existed in a meta with plenty of other really powerful armies. Kind of like how Biggs exists alongside characters like Han/Chewie, Wedge/Wes, Howl, Carnor/Soontir/Turr.

(Disclaimer, I haven't played vs/as Biggs in 4 ship builds. Generally because I feel an outer rim smuggler does a better job than him at disruption when you don't have critical character to protect.)

General Biggs defense:

Biggs is extremely powerful. 3 ships with Biggs is my most flown list, so I know a thing or two about flying him. But it also limits the BIggs player's flying style heavily. Flank maneuvers and what not become much more risky, and they water down what you invested in his power.

If the Biggs player has a lot of experience and really knows what he is doing, he can put some serious hurt on you with that guy. But he could with a lot of other lists too. And then, as annoying as Biggs is, they could annoy you with Howl, or Han, or most other pilots.

The pilot I would kill off would be Maarek Steele. Just so we could get a new Tie Advanced pilot who can hopefully make the ship worth buying. Variety is the spice of life

By the way, tomorrow in a great epic battle...

...I'm flying Biggs. I'm thinking of flying him between two huge ships. Nope, can't shoot at them, you must shoot at Biggs. Oh, and you have to shoot through the huge ships, so Biggs gets 1 extra green dice, and you can't reasonably get within 1 range of him, because the huge ships are too fat. Unless, of course, you want to park yourself in front of the huge ships.

It seems like a neat trick, actually - maybe something for an epic tournament. But... for a casual game it seems like a **** maneuver. Maybe the Empire thinks Biggs is the rebel commander whom they must destroy at all costs?

Ah. They are ahead of you here, I'm afraid.

Per the FFG epic tourney rules, Biggs' ability only works for small and large ships at range one. Not huge ones.

All phantoms and c3p0. Because, let's face it, he's the one really pulling all the strings on the falcon these days. But what better way to sell a 90$ product than to package it with the best upgrade for the best ship to counter the monster you unleash on the meta shortly thereafter. Strange how that works. Just think about the fact that basically every other product in this game is somewhat "self contained" and ships come with upgrades that make sense on them/ at least in theory synergize with them etc. Then look at 3p0 and how many green dice a tantive has and it starts to get really suspicious.....

Even the han upgrade makes sense to me since a tantive can't focus. I swear when they first spoiled 3p0, I just assumed there would be a tantive title or one of the teams that could somehow make it roll a green die to justify his existence in there. But no, no there isn't.

It's okay though, soon enough all the falcons AND phantoms will be replaced by all Outriders, all the time.

This could still be pretty cool if the huge ship you park him behind or w/e is the bright hope and you can double reinforce the front of it and pay ef emmitter or w/e it is.

For those saying he "warps the design space," do you mean the fact that many rebel builds center around him?

Introverdant hit most of the high points. Basically, he puts a cap on how good you can make any upgrade that can be assigned to an X-wing, or any upgrade or pilot ability that can be run in conjunction with Biggs.

Epic ships get bonus defense dice, as all ships do, when targeted at Range 3 or greater. If the Tantive IV is being targeted by another Huge ship's turbolasers, Threepio is going to come in handy.

Moreover, as I just said on another thread, you're making the least charitable assumption you could, and then ignoring the fact that Threepio isn't by any means required for Falcon builds to be effective or competitive--let along driving non-Falcon builds out of the game.

It's okay though, soon enough all the falcons AND phantoms will be replaced by all Outriders, all the time.

If you think the game is broken, you always have the option of giving up and and selling your stuff. In fact, I'd take it as a personal favor if you would, because I have seriously had it with the number of people around here who apparently can't bring themselves to feel anything but pessimism, disdain, and outrage about new releases.
