B-Wing Expanded

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing

I know this isn't new info, but....

C3-P0 on a B-wing for 4 points, anyone?

Probably not worth it, but very interesting nonetheless...

Interesting how this game is turning from xwing miniatures to b-wing miniatures. The. -wing was a rarity and hard to fly and only specific pilots flew it. It wasn't a common rebel ship across the galaxy. I'm glad rebel aces isn't increasing the power of the bwing but it does seems to be the ship that can do everything

Can't say I ever see myself using Nera Dantels... Never once have I put a torpedo on a B-wing, and this isn't much reason to start. Sure, I can make an APT shot in any direction, for 32 points. I then just have an overpriced B-wing. I knew we wouldn't get another pilot of the same caliber as Keyan Farlander, but Nera gets my vote for worst card in the set. Best part is she is a PS5 B-wing with an EPT, but IMO she should cost 25.

Rant over, just my opinion. Let me know why she's worth it, and maybe I'll play her.

And just when we were afraid the Phantom was going to run away with it all, here comes Nera Dantels! Load her up with some Flechette Torpedoes and dare those Phantoms to come into range.

I love it!

Loving this ability! awesome new idea, I just love so much about this, especially because I would have NEVER used a torpedo on a B-Wing before this..... Incredible new dynamic!

It is now confirmed that Jan can't help the ship she currently is in.

So long as they crew separate ships flying no further than range three apart, whenever Kyle Katarn grants his ship a focus token, Jan Ors can convert it to an evade token.

So that overrules the e-mail from Frank Brooks that says otherwise?

I wouldn't say it overrules it, but it's definitely evidence against it. Now it definitely needs an FAQ to clarify.

I don't get this at all. I'd pay 2 points for +1 PS and an EPT even without her pilot talent. The dagger squadron pilot is 2 points more for +2 PS and no EPT. Her cost seems very reasonable to me.

2 x flechette torps are 4 points. For 4 points on this pilot you get two 3 die shots you wouldn't have otherwise had, AND you stress your opponent whether you hit or not.

My imperial opponent is going to be sooo jealous when she sees this.

They've edited the article to remove that pesky "separate", from what I see.

Very interesting. Since they overtly removed "separate" it is now a strong "yes, the Jan crew can affect her own ship".

It looks like with the recent article edit that the omission of the word "separate" reinforces Frank's statement about friendly ship and another friendly ship

Interesting! I was surprised that they would not let it work, to be honest.

Now, is it possible to have a link to this e-mail sent that clarify it?

Ability aside. Finally a reasonably priced B wing with an EPT. I was really hoping they'd go the interceptor route and gives us generics with EPT slots. But this will do and that might have really killed off the X-wing.

Frank explains the difference between "friendly ship" and "another friendly ship" when talking about using Targeting Coordinator

Thanks a lot! I don't wander in the rule section often so I missed that.

So with this mail AND the fact that they removed the word 'separate' from the preview, I consider it now official that you can target yourself with Jan and Fleet Officer crew ability.

I'm just going to go ahead and use Nera's card & chit with a Y-wing mini.

Objections?

I like her. A very fun ability. I'm thinking of normal Torpedoes. While the Flechettes are the cheaper option, I like the idea of 2 attacks at 4 dice outside my arc.

And let the silly overpowered complaints continue.

Nera Dantels w/deadeye, bwing e2, recspec, APT - 37

Roark w/ ion turret, recspec - 27

3× Bandit - 36

100 pts

I also kinda like Nera w/deadeye, munitions failsafe, 2 x proton torp - 36 (could also replace the protons for fletchettes).

I'm just going to go ahead and use Nera's card & chit with a Y-wing mini.

Objections?

No kidding! Poor Y-wings :(

Honestly I wish the B-wing pilots were a bit less awesome, because it really just emphasizes how much worse off Y-wings and (to a lesser extent) X-wings are.

Although, they've done such a great job with Interceptors, A-wings, and B-wings, that I'm sure they'll do great things for the Advanced and Y-wings.

When they polish the Y-wing it will be a tank of a ship. Its just a matter of time.

Throw an HLC and APT on Nera and dare people to move into range 1.

Even better, she takes point for Keyan with HLC. Create a killzone that ships might not want to pass into.

Here, the addition of the C-3PO crew upgrade guarantees Nera Dantels at least one evade result every combat phase

Can someone explain how 3PO guarantees an evade result?

Announce zero evades when rolling your 1 dice. Either you get the evade from the dice or you get the evade from 3PO.

Nera with oppurtunist, flying next to jan throwing apt's! So much dice!

I'd be tempted by the 35 point control ship route:

Nera (26)

- Fire-Control System (2)

- Flechette Torpedoes x2 (4)

- Munitions Failsafe (1)

- Ion Cannon (3)

Maybe throw Deadeye in there to get the fun started.

Downside is that it's nigh-useless against Large ships.

FFG getting wicked creative and shows they listen. The article reads a little, if not defensive, like they're saying "hear us out" on the B-wing. So they've noted the shock that it isn't a Y-wing in the set. It also sounds like they did the B-wing because the ship was popular but only 1 or 2 pilot versions of it which, while good, doesn't offer much variety. Plus, with the Jan and Kyle cards it's almost a 2.5 ship set: it totally buffs the HWK. Exceedingly well done. Basically, to me, this article reveals a lot of FFG's mindset regarding where they want the game to go and I like what I'm seeing.

1) They want ships to be versatile, not merely strong in a one dimensional way (B-wing), to keep the game from devolving into 5 basic lists. This is good for the longterm life of the game as well.

2) When a ship isn't used often (HWK) they notice and work back to it even if it's not being focused on specifically.

3) They notice complaints (Y-wing) and respect consumers enough to provide some rationale.

4) Instead of ramming new products down our throats they are letting the game evolve organically by addressing the current state of the game actively through Aces releases (established ships) even as they plan new things like Wave VI (new ships).

5) They design ships in ways that are actively aware of new ships, giving older ships reason to be used against newer ships and preventing newer ships from constantly making older ships obsolete (Nera = Phantom counter).

6) They want variety not only in ships but in pilots. The measure of a good ship is both a versatile ship AND a ship with a variety of relevant pilots.

7) They really seem to want the meta to move in a direction that is less predictable, filled with more unique pilots, and thus reflective of each player's play style.

8) They seem to be trying real hard lately (Munitions Failsafe) to make ordinance a relevant part of the game.*

EDIT: AtomicFryingPan's insight, well spotted.
