Purposefully late to scout at venues; a fair/legit "strategy"/behavior?

Yeah, but your GF runs the double falcon list =P

So he actually uses his GF as bait ?

Extra points for maximum trolling.

I am surprised it was not 4 phantoms.

Just have a deadline for list submission wether that be the day before or an hour before, what ever works.

+ 1 non-issue if you have a list/entry deadline and just inform players it might be a good idea to keep their list private until said deadline passes.

As has been said 24 hours seems like you could be causing more harm then helping. Sure maybe for a world or regional or something but a common local tourney you would be best to foster a more open, less structured environment.

It's not a risk, since you walk around checking that people is playing the list during round 1, pretty much like you are doing anyways, but withouth the hassle of people switching and the registration proccess already done.

But doing so does not guarantee you winning at all, and this also means your list should have been submitted already, so there is no opportunity to switch it at this point.

But it helps you guarantee the fair competition. Yes, yes, in a perfect world this wouldn't be a problem, you don't do this to piss off people, you do to protect honest players from the eventual cheater.

to protect honest players from the eventual cheater.

But this isn't cheating. All you're doing is protecting people from a possible, slight advantage.

This seems like a non-issue to me. For example, at the Ohio Regional, a large number of people didn't even pull out their ships or share their builds until well after the lists were due. Therefore scouting would not have helped and may have actually hurt the scouter.

Yeah we all we wish we lived in a world where you can trust people, very sadly you cant.

IMHO For X-Wing this doesn't sound like an issue unless you can't keep your mouth shut about what you are playing or starts unpacking your ships long before the registration is over. I usually wait with unpacking the actual ships until I know what table I'll be at.

I don't see the issue. Most of this game is skill, not build. The challenge is not knowing my list, but beating me when the ships are on the table. Squad builds are not some secret sauce to an autowin.

I generally show up right before a tournament begins and make my list on the spot. Hopefully people do not think I'm 'cheating'. Couldn't imagine having to submit lists days or so ahead of time... usually TOs don't even know how many people will be in the tournament until moments before it begins. One Imdaar Alpha event had 6 people prereigister, then it shot up to 32 from walk-ins.

My experience is that most people have their models out and ready to go even though people are still making lists. No one has had a problem with scouting at my local locations. This is a game primarily a skill based game, rather than a list based one, so scouters don't get a huge advantage.

Okay, I will clarify or elaborate on a couple of things.

1) Having your list ready and written down in a readable format, preferably as a build printout really SHOULD be done in advance and makes your TO's life so much easier and (IMO) also show a bit of respect both to your TO and your opponents

2) In extension of 1) it will benefit yourself and help your TO to ensure/check that your list/squad is complete and "legal". I have myself forgotten to bring an upgrade at a top tier tourney since neither myself or my opponents in the first 3 games checked the list vs the squad. In another tourney I discovered that my 3rd round opponent had 110 points on the board....

3) I agree that it doesn't necessarily guarantees the "scout" any advantage. But I can assure you that it will likely cause some people to become more wary towards that person. Or rather it is SOOOO annoying. And these individuals tends to irk me already so it just gives an overall poor "flavor" or feel even before the game has started.

4) I have absolutely no issues with people who finish their game/games early wander about and observes what the opposition is up to in the unfinished games.

who only gets one win.... the guy who beats you was the one guy who lost to her.....

Absolutely love this! I think I will leave 3 bounty hunters on the table right before I pull out my Whisper list :-D

Where I play, If you show up late you can't enter the tournament. So this tactic wouldn't be useful.

Well, someone had to demonstrate the luck aspect of the game! I get the luck of driving 5hrs to play the 2nd round (after 1st round SC bye) against a guy I play at the local store 10min from my home (who always beats me when it matters, and I always beat when it doesn't matter), then the luck to roll nothing but blanks an ENTIRE game, and lose to a scnub that didn't know how many dice to roll, and then play against the guy that has an illegal list...

See, luck in the game! That day I truly demonstrated that. *shrug... I could totally take your GF in those twin Falcons any day though :)

I request lists at registration and validate them during rd 1. If any are found to be in error they get a match loss and potentially DQ'ed.

While it is possible to scout a bit prior to registering, you are basically doing so at your own risk (since while you may see XYZ the list of the day may be ABC), Besides, usually the meta is pretty set in stone and its not hard to determine what the 3-4 lists will be well in advance of the tournament. As an example, the YT-1300 was everywhere at the Madness Regional, but the neither of the lists that ended up making the finals had it. So while I could scout and decide to play something I felt was anti-falcon, I likely would have failed to make the cut if my matchups were poor or if I got outplayed at some point, so no real advantage was given. Particularly because everyone had a feeling Falcons and Phantoms would be the big lists of the day anyway so that bit of 'scouting' would have been largely obvious/irrelevant

Scouting also refers to people completing their matches early and walking around checking out other people's lists/playstyles. There is less you can do about that aside from ask players to leave the playing area once they are done playing, but even that can be challenging if you are at all pressed for space. Honestly, this is less of an issue in minis gaming on the whole, since most minis games require full disclosure of the list prior to play starting and I generally try not to worry about this unless there is some sort of obvious issue/advantage being given.

As I've posted above I really have no issues at all with people watching other games if their own finished early. That would just seem very strange to bar people up or have them "stay put" so that's not my point at all.

But I am pleased to see that most of you seems to be in partial agreement with me. And if nothing else I will say I mostly find it annoying (stalling handing in your list while scouting) and "not cool" to do.

You could easily find your self on the wrong side of a TO doing this. You are holding up registration (to a degree) in order to see what everyone else is playing so you can probably build your list to the actual as opposed to percieved meta. Yeah TOs aren't likely to enjoy that explanation when they ask you why you are walking around instead of submitting your list.

I guess you know all about "luck" how our last battle went.... I have never seen a come back from something so like that. I did however do half the damage to myself -though I blame attack wing.
