This game rules

By Punning Pundit, in X-Wing

A good game is one with simple rules- and powerful exceptions. For instance: in checkers pieces move diagonal one space at a time- unless they run into an opposing player's piece. In that case, they may "jump" that opposing piece and remove it from the game. Unless the space that would be jumped to is occupied. Simple rule, and an exception, with an exception to that case.

We've been playing Checkers for a very long time, we humans.

X-Wing, too has its rules. And its exceptions. Let's talk about those for a bit. I'll go first:

Every ship may take one "action" per turn. Unless it is stressed. Or unless it is granted a "free" action by certain other rules (such as Push the Limit, the unit is Darth Vader in a Tie Advanced, Lando hands out a free action, or Squad Leader comes into play.)

Players may only attack ships within their firing arc. Unless they are using a turreted primary or secondary weapon. In that case, they may attack ships inside or outside their printed firing arc.

Players make attacks using the red value printed on each individual ship. Unless that ship is attacking a ship within range 1, in which case they get an extra attack die. Or unless they are making an attack with a secondary weapon. Or a few other cases.

So: name a general rule and name an exception. For fun, lets see if we can come up with a general rule that _doesn't_ have an exception.

Here's one: When a ship ends its move overlapping an obstacle, it may not perform an attack.

I don't think there is an exception to that one, as long as it is still sitting on the asteroid during the combat phase.

you know, i was going to make a post awhile back about how xwing might replace the all time epic table top strategy game: Chess!

ok so maybe it won't permanetly replace the timeless classic game of chess, but gee dangit i think it comes to a close second.

1. it's star wars

2. has the same strategic element.

3. totally customizable!

4. easy to learn / hard to master

Would that be Dash Rendar? Yt-2400 You may ignore obstacles during the activation phase and when performing actions. But does he still loose the attack? I think so, unless he uses the barrel roll to get off the obstacle. You may have got it. Unless you start including large ships that I think destroy the obstacle. I don't recall. I haven't play a large ship yet.

Stupid quote not working right.

I wouldn't count Dash as an exception. Yes, he can barrel roll off of the obstacle during the activation phase but if he can't do that (blocked, etc) then even he doesn't get to shoot in the combat phase, so no exception to that rule for him, just ways to get around it during the activation phase. His special rule is specifically Activiation Phase only for ignoring obstacle effects so he still can't shoot in the combat phase if he's stuck sitting on one.
And nope, I'm not including Epic stuff...that's a whole other set of rules there.

You can only reroll a die once, no exceptions.
