help insurance explantion

By jaekat, in X-Wing

So my basement had a Major sewage backup, soaking and ruining a lot of my toys...sigh

Here's the trickey part my X-Wing minis can be cleaned but all the paper parts and cards got ruined, I'm not looking forward to explaining to my adjuster that the cards are not availble seperetly, LOL and that's before I try to explaine the value of Magic Cards,

Think calling FF might help me get replacement cards, at least?

Explain that the cards are PART of the ships and the cost to replace them is the retail price of the ship itself. Since I'm guessing you have at LEAST got some of your ships on sale, you might actually make out on money - or at least break even.

Then you have extra ships left over for painting, or swarm experimentation for epic games.

Now as for Magic the Gathering cards.... man that'll be hard but I'm sure they've heard of it before. Same goes for Comic books and other rare collectibles. Magic is popular enough that I'm sure there is a precedent.

Think calling FF might help me get replacement cards, at least?

Well, it can't hurt to try, I suppose. Sorry for the loss and good luck!

If your minis were in untreated sewage then they are a right off too, try explaining to a tournament full of people when they all get sick from the germs on your minis

Nay, the X-Wing minis are made with all kinds of cracks, crevices and pits. Cleaning the models to the point they would contain no trace contaminatns would destroy the delicate parts and painted areas. It is all a total loss, seriously, how do you plan to get sewage water out of the inside of a Lambda, YT or Firespray?

It is all a total loss, sorry.

Its a total loss dude. Value them at full market value.

Now one thing to be careful is about what kind of liability your insurance have for sewage back up. It is not the same as flood insurance. Our basement flooded this spring because the sump pump stopped working. Luckily it was not a finished basement and we had a bunch of junk down there that was still in boxes, still packed from our move to our first apartment (been packed in boxes for 8 years, so we obviously didn't need any of it.)

Anyway, we had a maximum of $15,000 that the insurance company would pay out for sewage back up, which is what a sump pump failure is defined as.

If your basement is finished, and you have that maximum premium your insurer will pay, then you might have to prioritize what you have replaced. In that case here are some things we learned:

1) wet, ruined paper products. We had our wedding guest book with all our guests well wishes and signatures get soaked. Let it dry off in the freezer.

2) For items in dirty water, I would have them sit in a bath of bleach, and then dump them into boiling water with some vinegar for 90 seconds. That should kill everything.

3) if you are still hestant, once everything has been treated, you can spray it with a tea tree oil solution or other anti-microbial (i doubt anything could survive the bleach + pasturization). I would do this for any paper products as you are not boiling them or treating them with bleach.

Sorry to hear about your loss dude. I would take a picture of the cards in their current state along with your models, so that if you cannot get your items replaced, you can print that out the picture and print out scanned copies of the cards you are missing, if you cannot salvage them. Then if anyone calls you on it, you can show the printed picture and say, "I own the cards, they might be toxic, would you rather I use those or these?" I doubt anyone would be that much of a bell-end.

Also, you could send a message to FFG customer service and explain the situation, they are usually quite understanding.

If you had raw sewage (ie: poop and/or poop water) in your basement, I'd seriously consider getting rid of everything once the insurance company is done with their valuation. Perhaps FFG may help, but they may need a letter from the insurance company to validate your claim.

For the rest of us, we can use this as a reminder for the rest of us to either keep your receipts (yeah right!) or take photos of anything valuable in your residence that may be difficult or expensive to replace. Talk to your insurance adjustor before throwing anything out though. You'll need evidence of what's been lost or damaged. They probably don't need a detailed explation of FFG's business model or production practices, just a list of what is needed to be replaced. For electronics such as televisions, DVRs, dSLR or cameras, or anything like that, write down the make, model numbers and serial numbers (in case of theft, it'll really help the police out)

For homeowners out there, remember to talk to your insurance company occasionally to increase the value of your home's contents, especially if this has changed since you moved in. New televisions, new furniture, new electronics and yes, even new game bits, can all add up.

(Can you tell my father worked in the insurance industry for years?)

When you make an insurance claim the claims company effectively owns whatever is salvageable on an item once they've paid out for it (i.e. they'll be able to sell the remains of a car to a scrap dealer to help recoup some of their losses). As far as I'm concerned the dials, cards & tokens are vital to the usability of an x-wing ship (starter box or single expansions). If your insurance policy covers the xwing stuff & in the manor of it's demise I'd claim-definitely! The only exception I'd make is if I wanted to avoid a big excess payment or policy price hike (in which case you could always ask FFG if they'd consider replacing your damaged cards etc but that's essentially down to their good will and I wouldn't hold it against them not to replace a raft of stuff gratis considering the normal course of action would be for the insurance company to fork out and buy replacements). You could mention to the insurance company the fact that the ships are ok and you'd accept replacement cards etc only if they can agree it with FFG but frankly that's only helping out 1 party-the insurers. If you made a claim the insurance company may turn round and say "keep the ships" as they wouldn't know what to do with them-you could end up with a load of spare ships all above board (a perfect opportunity for a bit of creative modelling/conversions/painting.....:-)

Nurgle ties!

Nurgle ties!

hahaha! Oh man, it's funny because it's true.

Jaekat, sounds like everyone has provided some great advice, so I'll just provide my well-wishing. I hope it all works out in your favor, and in record time! (insurance companies can be slow)

You can also purchase insurance riders for special items. My buddy has a $80K policy rider for his miniatures. And yes, he has that invested.

2) For items in dirty water, I would have them sit in a bath of bleach, and then dump them into boiling water with some vinegar for 90 seconds. That should kill everything.

Should this go in the "Ultimate Fix For The Tie Advanced" thread?

I have some dice that may go this route...

This is one opportunity where the community could easily come together. How many of us have duplicates of unique pilots? We could all easily send the guy some of our extras.

I urge you to just replace the whole collection. As previously mentioned there is no way you can rid those models of all of the bacteria (ecoli springs to mind) without destroying them. For your own health and those you play with, the places you play etc just claim for the whole thing. It should make it easier too.

It's always weird hearing about basements flooding. Over in the UK hardly any houses have basements. Although that pretty much means that when we get flooded its the whole ground floor.

Anyway, my complete condolences, I hope you can get back all your stuff.

Claim on everything you can. Nothing is worth keeping after what it's been through. You'll have to explain to your insurance company that when you buy a ship, EVERY component that comes with it is ESSENTIAL to the game. They've got to pay out all or nothing. Hope for the "all".

Good luck

Sorry to hear about that, and good luck! Just curious, where are you located?

Thanks all for the input and thoughts, just talked to the adjuster and while this is the first time with XWing, he's familiar with CCGs and Mini games, apperantly MetLife has a group of adjusters who's job it is to deal with CCG and Primarly Magic, as my adjuster put it you'd be amazed at how many people suposidly have their Black Lotus ruined in floods/fires,

Figure I'll replace at least 1 each of everything, so now I'll be able to run that 2 falcon list.

Congratulations!!! You've just earned the title of Patient Zero :)  It will make it easier for the CDC to determine where the outbreak started.

Now you can figuratively AND LITERALLY have a sh!tty game of X-Wing

(On a side note, I will definitely be thinking twice if I ever consider buying second-hand minis...)

That sucks dude.

It kinda depends on who your insurance provider is too, if they will even cover sewer backup. I work for Farmers Insurance and I know that we do. But it still sucks. Just tell the adjuster that it is a total loss and hope that you have Replacement Cost coverage.

Too true. I know I have some (er a lot of) unique pilots. If you can't replace, PM me.

Replace everything. Don't play with minis soaked in ecoli and human refuse.

Some guys collection is on sale. Maybe you could get that.

Why doesn't dunking every miniature in a bleach soak work again?

as my adjuster put it you'd be amazed at how many people suposidly have their Black Lotus ruined in floods/fires

I'd guess twice as many as the number printed copies. :)

Why doesn't dunking every miniature in a bleach soak work again?

Is it a 100% fix? Plastic is pretty porous, would YOU put it in your mouth afterward? If yes, then why not buy the sh!t soaked minis off of him so he can by new?

That sucks dude.

Yes, definitely replace all the ships AND dispose of the ones that did the sewage bath.
