Starfield Maps Kickstart
The people involved with this kickstarter are local to me and I have played a few games on their prototypes and have to say they are a step up for the GF-9 mats. Durable vinyl mat with just a bit of "grip" to them make them perfect of X-Wing in my opinion.
Plus some of the extras like planet markers and asteroids are really nice add-ons. I like that the asteroids they are offering come in a sheet. This way I can cut them into any shape I want.
Edited by shintaibaneI'm tempted to make an asteroid sheet on cardboard now..
That big blue galaxy map looks nice. Love the color to it. Fair price when compared to Gale Force 9, etc
Such a shame it's "US Shipping only". Auto failure for me.

Yeah being US only means a no from me aswell, i fully understand international postage costs a bomb but no point pledging if i wont get my stuff.
Well, and also the lack of any discussion of what makes it a "better" mat than ones out there now. Just a lot of emo touchy-feeling commentary that really don't address the product itself, other than a passing comment about some "high quality vinyl". Followed by paragraphs of how this will let them buy new equipment. *yawn* Tell me what *I* would get, not what you would get and how my getting it will make my life better and complete.

I agree
I am surprised more mats don't have asteroid and setup area marketed out, with at least faded less obstructive lines...

Right with you. Simply opening up shipping to other countries at a reasonable price would open up so many backers to any kickstarter provided a quality product is being developed.
Shipping to and from Europe/US is steep... are you really thinking you would pay $40ish to ship your $40 mat? I admit i did not pledge to a Kickstart from Italy only because of the shipping. In that case it was $150 + $50 more shipping.
Another thing ... if you ask ... they might change their minds, many do!

No, but I'm in Canada and shipping across the border is super cheap. I agree Europe/Asia is expensive, but leave that to the funder if they want to pay it - don't just take away the option entirely. It's poor marketing and product deployment.

Possibly a dumb question, but do the actual prototypes (and I'd assume the ones they'll be shipping) have that logo in the corner like the pictures in the KS? I get companies wanting to advertise their product, but that's an buzz kill to me.
Guess you will need to find something else to dislike.....
they did an update...

I guess you were not the only one with shipping issues.
Shipping to and from Europe/US is steep... are you really thinking you would pay $40ish to ship your $40 mat?
Sometimes yes, because Australians are often in a position of either paying more for shipping or not getting anything at all.

This would make me very sad.... but if its the only way, I guess i might pay it too.

Wait, why would you have to pay shipping? You're in Schaumburg, IL. The Kickstarter project creator is also in Schaumburg, IL.
Oh, hey, wait a minute. You have 3 posts, all of them in this one thread. Well, isn't that interesting.
Are you the project creator's sockpuppet?

That alone is a reason to avoid it. Huge.
I don't mind people with accounts marketing their products to a community that they're involved with and have taken the time to learn and be a part of. However, to make it so painfully obvious that they have *no* connection with the community before hand, and just come along to try to sell their product just leaves a bad impression to me.
Their logo at the bottom left of every map keeps me from ordering.
NO.. not a sock puppet... I know one of the guys involved and I would like to see them succeed... as for shipping my comment was more sympathetic to ELTNOT who was looking for shipping to Australia. The fact that I dont post here often does not mean I have not been here reading other threads about X-wing squad building or other features.
Lastly I would hope I would not need shipping as they are local to me.
The way I see it you will support it or you won't. You will find a reason to like it or a reason to dislike it... I personally am one who likes the art and thinks it will bring something more to the games I play.

Edited by VexnosMeh, I don't see a lot of appeal. $5 more than GF9 at MSRP, same material (or at least if it is higher quality as claimed I can't confirm). Images are pretty busy, which while an opinion thing I personally dislike.
Not a fan personally, but good luck!

That doesn't jibe with the post you made over on A Few Maneuvers, unless it's just a coincidence that that poster's name is Vexnos and lives in the Chicago suburbs too.
I found a new map kickstarter... I liked it a bit better than most as it had some options for asteroids and planets that many don't. I think it also looks a bit more professional than just some guy printing stuff in his basement.
Just thought I would let you folks know
Over here, when called on it, you're saying that you know one of the people involved. Seems to me that if your intention is to help your friend, that would be a great thing to mention up front. Have you played on the mats and seen the planet and asteroid tokens yourself?
If you're not a sockpuppet, then you're shilling for a friend. Just be honest about it. Otherwise it looks like another sleazy Kickstarter project created by someone who doesn't know what they're doing. (The way I see it, if you're trying to break into an industry and you need Kickstarter to do it, you're totally in over your head. If you need to purchase equipment and software in order to fulfill the orders that you're taking now, you're in over your head. This project might not be doomed to fail, but I think it'll be a small miracle if it delivers on time and the creators have any money in pocket when it's over.)
What's really suspicious about all of this is that (giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're not the creator) the creator hasn't posted for himself about this. If the creator is using friends to shill for them, then it's circumventing the no-advertising rule that's common on these sorts of corporate sites. Not too cool.
I am surprised more mats don't have asteroid and setup area marketed out, with at least faded less obstructive lines...
Most players seem opposed to seeing any sort of grid or ranging assistance printed on the mat.

Yes, because its too easy to use them as a guide for movement/ranges once you are familiar with it.
I wouldn't mind a border... no grid. Even then most people don't like the idea of the border.
I like mine made out of mouse pad material....
