Starfield Game Tile Kit?

By ShadowClipse, in X-Wing

Ok, so in April 2013 I saw a news announcement for the game tiles, but haven't seen much about it since then.

Was this product cancelled? I was seriously interested in purchasing it but it is not available anywhere.

It shows as "Not Available" on the accessories products page, and it's a broken link to the shop:

FFG, any updates about this?

I do believe it is cancelled. People use mats and tablecloths.

Props to FFG for not wasting their money putting these tiles out at this very late date.

I apologize the readers of this X-wing forum for giving them the burden of reading another thread about a past topic. Please don't flame on me. If you are stupefied about this problem point your finger at FFG. If they made the interface to these forums more user friendly, there would not be a problem. In this case I could not easily find a way to search this forum for the topic I am asking about. In addition, FFG has not made it easy to find updated information on this product in particular.

My other alternative is to spend my precious time slogging through thousands of forum posts to eek out an answer. Some post topics have no useful description which would require me to potentially look at every single post. I don't have time for that, do you? I tried to make my post topic very clear. If it's something that bothers you, you have the option to skip over it. Let's try to keep this community respectful and helpful instead of making people feel bad for asking questions. I would like to see this community grow, not turn people away when they are curious about something.

Perhaps instead you can provide constructive feedback, like directing me to the search function that seems to be missing on these forums? Thanks for your helpful answers to my simple question that I could not quickly find anywhere else.

For those that are new and dont know you shouldnt just scorn them for being inquisitive.

Just remeber the only dumb question is the one not asked by the person that wishes to know.

Regardless if its been asked before.

Heh I'm pretty new here and it took me a while to find the itty-bitty search bar at the top. It's pretty unobtrusive.

Above the "| News| Catalog |Upcoming | Community | Shop | More... " bar. :D

And...welcome to the game! We hope your enjoy your stay!

Don't sweat the small stuff... stay a while. There are some very good people (Wingers) here. There is room for more.

:)

There is a search function right at the top of the page.

I have heard from a lot of people that didn't know it existed, which seemed odd to me because it is in such a prominent spot at the top of the page... *shrug* hope you find it useful.

Thank you! That search bar at the top of the page is definitely in the wrong place. It doesn't seem like it would apply to the forum searching, but now I know where it is and can use it from now on. I appreciate your patience with me on this one!

I'm not sure I would have found it myself. Nor would I think to search for a topic before posting it. I think I'd rather ask the question and find out later it was something covered 7 months ago.

Well, searching for a topic would be a polite thing to do, and if you do you will see the last were not that long ago. That said, the search function of this forum is not really optimal and FFG is to blame here for not communicating about the product in a better way. There are still shops selling it (although less and less, I believe shops actually got a letter that the product was abandoned), and I had it on order for months before giving up. A small news item about it and updating the website would have helped.

Maybe the tiles wouldnt have worked to well, but to take them with me on the bike I rather use them, than the giant hazardous vinyl roles I have to bring now.

Fair point.

I still think the product has some legs to it, but I can understand why they decided to focus their efforts elsewhere.

The product has no legs, and better maps and mats are being done cheaper, faster and are far more readily available already.

It's a dead product, and good on them for ditching it.

Thanks for the insight. Do you have links to good battle maps with the space theme? I've seen some of the "mousepad" material mats with the fabric top, but ideally I'd like something that keeps the minis in place so that they can't easily get bumped around or moved when the table is bumped. I've also seen vinyl type mats, but are vinyl mats good at holding the minis in place? Does the vinyl curl easily and take time to flatten out?

Minis not moving is difficult to achieve based on the mat only. Most people have gone the way of modifying their bases to achieve this. Some real creative ways on here. What I did is bought some business card magnets (adds some weight and are self adhesive), one or two cut to fit will do the job per mini. I then glue cupboard liner to the bottom, very grippy stuff, works great, no more sliding, more prone to toppling.

Gale Force 9 makes some nice maps, can find them on their sight, or most other sights, I no miniature market caries them.

vinyl is pretty much the cheap option and comes in many different qualities. I bought mine through (German) e-bay and am not dissapointed. They do curl (also because i store them that way), but flatten pretty quick, although the edges can stay a little bit curly. The ones I have have a bit of a relief, which helps for grip, but there are better options, like magnetized maps, and mousemat material. Here is a pic of it:

^^ what they said.

I own a GaleForce9 mat and I quite like it. There's just a *bit* of resistance to them but it's not enough to stop ships from wiggling around entirely. It is also a bit susceptible to scratches if played on a bit too ruggedly (as I found after letting some younger players have at it during a demo at a game con...). The mousepad material aren't too bad for slippage but I've only heard that anecdotally, never actually tried one myself.

*edit* The GF9 mat does lie perfectly flat though, unlike some of the photo-printed vinyl mats.

One guy in our group put little rubber bumpers on the bottom of the bases - like the kind you find in a hardware shop for putting to dampen the sound your kitchen cupboards closing. They worked but can elevate the base so that the movement template actually slips underneath. Oops.

I use a Gale Force 9 mat and I also have some printed by a banner company.

If you really want the starfield tiles, someone posted a picture of an event where the TO was using actual floor tiles and it looked pretty good. Same idea. 12" x 12" black tiles. Easily transportable. Although I don't know if they would slide around, or if knowing all the 12" edges would impact game play.

BTW, I also couldn't find the search function for a month posting here. Someone had to point it out.

Yeah, it's at the top of every page, although I see I was beaten to telling you that. I wasn't flaming you, I was making a joke to the wider community. Your thread doesn't "bother" me; I just think it's funny to see a new thread asking this very thing almost every day.

Quick tip: I store mine rolled image out and that seems to help it flatten faster.

im planning on picking up a star field map from my local print shop and having it laminated and then applying it to a piece of plywood that it will be covered with polyurathane so its protected pics will come once its made and finished. I currently have a star field piece of cloth that i bought for 6 bucks at walmart from the star wars line of cloth. i use it for travel and pick up games.

Sometimes searching the forums is way more work than it's worth. Maybe not here, but on other forums the search function is pretty much a waste of time. You search for something and find hundreds of hits and many of them aren't that relevant... or they consist of posts saying "me too" or "I'm having the exact same problem" but then go on to explain a completely different issue. Slogging through old forum posts can be insane at times.

I am getting a gripmat from www.gripmat.com (a KickStarter founded project). It's VERY anti skiddish with a silicone like surface. Check out their demo video. I already have 3 GF9 maps and they are good but as mentioned the ships are easily bumped/slided
