Gaming group politics

By DJB2, in X-Wing

So I wonder if maybe it truly was because you didn't like the games they played.... or rather how you communicated that to the group.

I could imagine that someone who was at my local store on X-Wing Sunday, stating that they don't like X-Wing... that would be one thing... but I could see them being a total jerk about it too, like "This game is Sooooo simple, it takes NO strategy at all. A trained chimpanzee could play this game and roll dice. It is so childish".

And yeah that person would probably get thrown out, and then claim it was because they didn't like the game.

I used to have a friend who was trying to get into a raiding guild in an MMO I used to play. This friend was extremely annoying and crude and wouldn't shut up. On top of that, this particular friend wasn't very good at the game. After not making it into the guild, this person went around claiming that they were denied entry based on something totally different. "they gave me the boot because I'm X" basically, and we just decided to let them go on thinking that... .because it's certainly easier than saying "No, we booted you because you suck, you are annoying, you have a filthy mouth, and honestly nobody likes you".

... .because it's certainly easier than saying "No, we booted you because you suck, you are annoying, you have a filthy mouth, and honestly nobody likes you".

**** ... visions of grade school, middle school, high school, and college all over again. :P

what were the 2 games?

Just start your own club. I did, in Aberdeen, which is even more backward than hull! A few posts on sites like this and dakka, and a few posts on various x wing Facebook pages resulted in the cloud city league, which is going strong. I'm now luring some of the members into infinity, and they are luring me back to 40k.

We aren't a club in that we all just play at mine, cos I'm blessed with a biggish living room, but plans are afoot to find a bigger location and run tourneys etc.

Politics get really serious in roleplaying groups as well...Really serious *L*

The two games I didn't like were Kingdom builder and Vikings, one is a brain burner, not a bad game, just not my thing, the other is basically just bad... anyway... I wasn't withering in my criticism or foul mouthed either, I just said I didn't enjoy them.

I don't know what it was, I could go over everything I said and how I said it, but that way madness lies, the two guys from the group who know me best were just as shocked as I was.

Basically a lot of it was based upon the notion that I can't stand Eurogames and only like Ameritrash... which is daft, I like good Eurogames and good Ameritrash... (and I liked the vast majority of the games we played at this group)

Anyway I'm trying to stay in contact with the guys I got on with, we'll see how it goes, but I'm not sure its going to work out, they aren't going to leave the club for me and they don't have the time to spare to go to two nights a week. (Plus I don't have the space nor the game collection this other guy has)

Does anyone know how to search for X-wing players in Hull UK??? I've given it a go but I'm not very web savvy. You mentioned Facebook pages? Are there more than one?

I find this interesting in that someone would choose to act this way. I had a long time roleplaying group that fell apart back in the mid-90's just due to life - people getting married, jobs, kids etc. We played every RPG you could think of, and occasionally card games like Magic (it was new back then, and we broke it out when the larger group couldn't get together).

Now we're at a point in our lives where things have settled down. We're trying to game as often as possible. I have a group of 3 or 4 friends who get together regularly for X-Wing, and another group that is just starting to get back into roleplaying and tabletop games (non-miniature).

Now, I don't know that I'll get as involved in the roleplaying aspect of these various groups - not because I don't love roleplaying, but more because I don't know that I can commit to a long term campaign. And that's fine with both groups of friends. We still get together, and I'll play the occasional game, and I'll occasionally see one of the RPG members drop in for a game or 2 of X-wing. Nobody holds it against me, or is snobbish in the least about the games I choose or choose not to play. My choices for not getting too involved in the RPG aspect of things has more to do with the fact that I have a very involved family life, and I no longer have the "disposable" time to commit to long term campaigns where others may rely on my character. If it's a drop in/drop out situation, I'm your guy, and I can have plenty of fun doing so, and I hope all of my friends feel the same.

And that's what it's all about isn't it? Fun? I'm currently having a lot more fun with X-Wing than anything else, so I tend to find more time for it ATM. That may change in the future, but at least I'm not depriving anyone else of having their fun.

I'd start by asking on the x wing uk/irl page. I'm sure I've seen hull players on there before.

Those arent even GOOD eurogames! Barely average at best. Its not like you were putting down Agricola or Ora et Labora.

Why do Europeans require their games be held

within the confines and control of a club?

Get together with some friends and game. No BS is necessary or welcome.

Because we don't have many flgs's. My closest is a several hundred mile round trip. With games such as x wing being a pretty niche thing that most of my mates aren't into, I started a wee x wing league/club/group (call it what you will), to make friends who ARE into it.

Agree 100%, are we talking acquaintances here or actual friends? Acquaintances I can see acting like jerks and being political... True friends aren't like that, they can be royal pains in the a$$ sometimes lol but not to the point of kicking someone out of the group in my experience.

Have you joined the "star wars x-wing miniatures game UK/IRL" group on facebook? we've got like 1500 members now, all over the UK.

Gaming stores are generally found only near bigger cities so alot of us have no access, so you either get groups of friends or gaming clubs.

Politics within gaming is sadly unavoidable. I was a member of a long standing gaming club years ago, but when the politics starting getting silly, there was a coup, and that was that. Me and a couple of other guys weren't kicked out but basically made to feel about as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit, so we started another club with a couple of basic ground rules and dispensed with all the crap that had destroyed the last club. Over 22 years later and I'm pleased to say our club is still going strong.

May you should start a thread aimed at helping those who want to start their own gaming clubs? Cover political situations and ground rules and such. ;)

Just a thought...

It's real simple, and the simpler the better. Helps avoid the dramas.

We have two executives; a President/Treasurer and a Secretary (me), no committee. One Annual General Meeting each year that lasts about ten minutes, where we decide on the yearly membership subscription fees and vote on any changes to the club executives (which hasn't changed in over ten years). The only games allowed are tabletop or board games - no roleplaying games (which has basically died a quiet death in our area anyway).

The club rules are short and sweet:

  1. You cannot interfere or comment on a game that you are not involved with. Standing on the sidelines and pointing out missed opportunities is not allowed.
  2. Physical violence is not tolerated.
  3. Dishonest behaviour is not tolerated.

And that's about it. Told you they were short and sweet. And we've had no dramas for over 22 years.

What are the contact details for this particular club. I am feeling the need for a strongly worded email to them about how they put the gaming hobby to shame.

To clarify, the group in Hull that the TC was unduly dismissed from, is the group I wish to contact.

So, aside from Parravon's benign duo-dictatorship, it strikes me that politics is natural to any group of people, especially when any form of organization is involved.

Hobojebus mentions how gaming clubs are necessary when local gaming stores are not available to host, which is a feature of non-urban environments.

But in areas where there are gaming stores that host activities, is there added value to an organized club? Is it worth the headache of the politics?

I used to own Kingdom Builder and I've played it a dozen times. I wound up selling it.

I've never played Vikings.

I'm not sure if it is the same in the UK but you could set up a club in the local library. There are groups around me that play regularly in the library even with a FLGS near by.

:) Yeah, I'm married to a librarian. It's not actually where I play, but this October I'll be doing an X-Wing program there for the local kids. Hopefully, I'll get some people in the X-Wing pilots community to give me a hand with it.

Hey, it's not a dictatorship. We have elections. It's just that they're such an apathetic bunch that they're happy letting me and the Prez run the show. Status quo for another year. :)

DJB: If you are ok with a bit of a trek you can join us at York Garrison.

http://www.yorkgarrison.co.uk/

There's a fair bit of x-wing going on, as well as lots of other stuff.

Hi there Blue Seven, sadly I'm broke at the moment so York is a bit out of reach, but thanks for the offer I'll keep it in mind for rosier times :) (Bit of a trek :P I thought you meant attack wing for a second there :D)

I've just sent a join group request to the "star wars x-wing miniatures game UK/IRL" Facebook page, thanks for the tip Eggs and nurglez :)

I live close to Hull, at the moment I'm working in Hull, I'm up for a few games and I have a very fly casual attitude. Drop me a line, I have loads of ships and board & mats etc.
