horsepower limited tourney?

By Darthfish, in X-Wing

I love this game, but do not get to play much. I am as much collector as player, as there is Noone playing X wing in my area. I have all the ships, but I must admit to being a little overwhelmed by all the options and combinations. I would think this might be a problem for people just coming into the game as well. I am wondering if there ought to be an alternate format that restricts to wave 1 and 2. I don't want to replace tournament play or limit it. But I think a newbie would get eaten alive in the current tourney scene. Noone expects to win their first tournament, but if you play 3 tournaments and never win, it might turn newcomers of to the game. Perhaps some horsepower limited tournaments would be a little easier to work into, build some knowledge and confidence, then they can work up to the big leagues. Personally, I have fun win or lose and will continue to play anytime I can. What says the group about this. How about a flight school tournament series?

Each level represents a wave.

FS tourney level 1 = wave 1 60 points

FS tourney 2 = wave 1 & 2 100 points

Etc.

Thoughts?

Very cool idea. For someone who spends time on this site and plays weekly, setting your ships up across from a Phantom is no big deal. But, for a new player, they would definitely have quite a bit of trouble with some of the unique abilities that have been developing in the later waves.

I read this thread as "Horsepire Limited Tourney" and wondered what I had done to be excluded.

I don't really think the game is complex enough to need something like this but it could be pretty cool to have a series of tournaments that progress through the waves.

What area are you from Darthfish, and have you tried playing on Vassal at all? the community there is vast and has a lot of good players to play against.

Planning on trying out vassal actually. I have downloaded the modules to give it a go.

Wave 1-2 increase FFG's bottom line how?

Sorry, but consumers asking manufacturers to slow down is ridiculous.

Not asking them to slow down, and new players will be buying wave 1 and 2, so there is that. I am suggesting a mechanism for easing late comers into the game. Discouraging new players will hurt the bottom line.

I agree! We recently had a tournament where three new players were crushed! Who knows if they will return! In my first public appearance at an XWing tourney, I went 0-3!!

It's a harsh beginning for anybody entering Xwing now! Guys that have been playing since Wave 1 and 2 are way ahead on the knowledge alone! Restricting some tourneys to encourage newbies just makes sense!

Magic the Gathering card game does it with some of their tourneys, new packs, etc so there is a precedence!

limiting the ship pool does not get rid of experience. Even if you go all the way back to just wave 1, the more experienced players will still beat the newer players. Yes it will simplify squad building but nothing else.

It would be hard to put the cat in the bag now. For instance....what EPT's came in wave one and two? And then with restricted lists it would be ruff on the moderator to make sure they are all legal.

And the people most likely to have a list not allowed is a new player who just bought rebel aces and threw opportunist in his list.

At my LGS they do a cool thing. He has a tourney for say $5. Then he uses the prize money to buy models, and gives them away as door prizes(random drawings). In the 2 events I have been to, a rookie player has won a ship.

That and the good community, and fun experience will be enough to bring at least those two back.

This is the best way to run events. Keep them cheap so the barrier is lower and it doesn't hurt so bad when it's not won. these local smaller events are where newer players should get their feet wet. It's up to the more experienced players to pass on little tie-bits of information to help improve the newer players game.

That is one thing newer players have is a wealth of knowledge the elders have to learn from. Unlike the beginning when everyone was figuring it out. This is the purpose of my Movement Guide. To help pass on the knowledge I have learned.

People with lots of experience may win more often but someone just entering the game can certainly make a splash by learning the new stuff faster than the old timers who may be stuck in their ways.

I mean wen wave 4 came out if someone just got into the game and could master Phantoms easily they'd be a leg up on a lot of long time players who are trying to figure it out as it is like nothing we've seen before.

Something to consider.

The X-Wing and Tie fighter are still considered staple ships in the game, so limiting people to wave 1 or 2 is not going to really limit the vets.

If you limited it to wave 1, you'd effectively limit Imperial players to Tie Swarms.

Better IMO to run it as a escalation, start off with 50 points and work up from there. The vets will still have an advantage but it will be easier for the Newbies to play.

I have a friend who gets to play X-Wing probably even less than I do. We're trying to start playing together more once a month, but he gets easily overwhelmed by all the options. So I've thought about doing something similar to this when we play. Limit the total number of choices, and slowly add more each time we play. Starting at the beginning seems pretty logical (even if it does put off the shiny new stuff for a while).

Ok. So maybe level one is no upgrades.

I agree that the Veterans are always going to have an advantage. I suppose that I was thinking of this more as a way for noobs to fight noobs.

One thing I have observed where I play is heavy synergy. I was fighting against 2 YTs cherries leading with Lando trailing, feeding chewie actions, then chewie had a recent spec as well, so he was in essence getting 3 actions per turn. Had my butt handed to me, Despite solid flying and successfully blocking Lando. Others got toe up even worse. I had fun anyway, but I think it is discouraging for some.

When I first started getting into the game, I used random squad generators to just give me _something_. Those squads were never good, but X-Wing was fun to fly regardless.

OK, no more writing on my phone in the car. See post above. Sorry for poor spelling. It's chewie obviously. And torn up.
