Extended Trailer for Animated Star Wars: Rebels

By Slugrage, in X-Wing

looks amazing, I really have high hopes for this one!

Jason Isaacs as the Inquisitor? That's awesome.

I love the nod to McQuarrie's concept art. Gives everything a classic yet new feel to it.

...but as excited as I am, I'm cautiously optimistic as well. Cautious because Disney is doing it. Optimistic because Lucas isn't...

At first I'd been looking forward to this, but the stubby TIE Fighter wings and stubby astromech droid look ridiculous to me. Disney has Disney-fied Star Wars, much as I'd feared.

If they'd stayed true to the classic Star Wars designs, I'd be totally into this, But now that I see what they've done with it, this looks like a Play SchoolTM version of Star Wars.

Dang it, I'm a grown man, not a toddler!

Well it is a show meant for kids...

I think the show looks interesting. I am definitely excited for it, but I am reserving my judgement until I see it. As far as the style choices, it is a cartoon meant for children, not the movies which are more geared towards adults. So I really don't have any strong disagreements with it. Would I have designed it that way? Probably not, but then again I'm not someone with years of experience making children's cartoons.

lol, it is a kids cartoon. They need to make new Star Wars fans somehow, I hope this means the cartoon will get all the kids stuff and the movies will stay true to the original star wars. Unlike that whole teen angst prequel garbage.

The counter-argument is that the Star Wars: The Clone Wars cartoon didn't stray from the movie designs of the ships, and it was really cool. My son and I watched it together and loved it! Why did Disney feel that the only way that kids would enjoy Star Wars Rebels was if they toddler-ized the designs? I think that's baloney. Star Wars: The Clone Wars was incredibly successful and cool, and it didn't require pandering to the perceived style-preferences of preschool-aged kids.

This is the kind of bone-headed move that I would have expected from George Lucas, but given how well Disney has been handling other franchises, such as Marvel, I had been expecting more from them.

For me, the style choices of the Star Wars Rebels show is a BIG disappointment, and I think will turn off many potential viewers.

Didn't stray from the designs? Yeah on ships maybe, but all the people were doe-eyed block heads! Every character in that show looked like a doll!

It isn't Disney-fied go take a look at Ralph Mcquarrie's Star Wars concept art. They based the art style for this show off of his work. So it's not entirely something Disney pulled out of their backside. It's just like the new X-Wing for episode 7 is exactly like Ralph's concept art for it.

Now the story may end up being Disney-fied, but that's another.....story. lol

Agreed, and that was a bit of a turn off for me in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. However, Star Wars Rebels takes it further to make the Stormtroopers, Astromech droids, and TIE Fighters to look child-like.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not expecting an animated Star Wars equivalent of the new Battlestar Galactica TV show, but I was hoping for some cool story telling, supported by equally impressive visuals. Instead, we get the toddler version of Star Wars.

Even my 11-year-old son is going to ask me why everything looks so childish, and he may not even want to watch it.

It just seems like such a squandered opportunity to get Star Wars right.

Didn't stray from the designs? Yeah on ships maybe, but all the people were doe-eyed block heads! Every character in that show looked like a doll!

And the voice acting and script writing was awful. I've been trying to get through the show but the plots are so bad it is painful to watch.

People seem to be confused about something.

I saw ANH when it came out in 77, it was never aimed at mature audiences really. So this idea that the cartoons are for kids and the movies for adults isn't really correct.

To be fair, I do love the McQuarrie-inspired Chewbacca character. That looks awesome. Just not at all digging the infantization of the Star Wars Rebels style choices.

I foresee this show being a little bit frustrating because it is made for Disney XD, a channel that parents are supposed to be able to turn on for their children and not have to worry about the content.

I remember being pretty surprised by some of the violence in The Clone Wars. Just because it was a cartoon, I expected it to be very kid-friendly. There was one particular scene where a clone walks up behind a jedi and shoots her in the head. They don't show the impact, but it is very clear what just happened. I can't imagine that happening in Rebels. That said, I would have guesses that a lot of storm troopers would get knocked out instead of killed, but the trailer shows one getting shot in the middle of the shot before the 2 minute mark.

I guess I would say that I am also optimistic about this.

The biggest concern for me is that the show is on Disney XD instead of Cartoon Network.

I have Time Warner Cable with their standard digital cable package with includes the majority of cable channels including Cartoon Network. However for some stupid reason, they have a block of several channels that you have to pay an extra $11 a month to access, and one of them is Disney XD. My cable bill is already ridiculously high, so I doubt I'll pay more just to watch Rebels unfortunately.

yeah to bad the SyFy channel didn't get a hold of it and give it the BSG treatment!!! i almost half expect one of the characters in true Disney cartoon fashion start singing some catchy toon midway through the show!! and i too think they made it a bit too doh eyed and as was mentioned it is on the Disney channel so it will more than likely be kidified plot wise but we shall see..... and why all the Mcquarrie love? i mean his designs are "OK" but why not keep some continuity with the older stuff??'

Disney and Netflix seem to have a decent relationship. I think this series will likely end up on Netflix eventually, but this is just speculation on my part.

I didn't watch clone wars until it was on Netflix and I really enjoyed being able to cruise through the seasons at my own speed. I have no immediate or pressing desire to watch Rebels on a channel I don't want to purchase on an episodic schedule determined by Disney XD.

I'll just wait and enjoy it on my own time when it's available in a format I can enjoy. It looks like fun to watch, but I'm in no rush to see it until it's convenient for me.

All the ships in Rebels will work in X-Wing.

I can't wait to dye my hair purple.

I totally enjoyed the style for this new Rebels series. It had drama, fun, and action.

It was alive.

It also does not look anything like the stupid prequel, like clone-dopes.

Toy'ish designs?

Okay a little yeah.

^_^

What I saw in this preview is wayyy better than more of the same photo fake realism that has no style at all and is always overdone plastic lameness that equates to the gawd awful soulless heartless irrelevant prequel.

No one alive could love the prequel like we love the original trilogy because we do not care because we know it is not real.

I watched the clone-dopes a few times and ran from it for the same reasons. It is not alive and it is no fun... at all.

I had nothing but an open mind for this little Rebels preview clip.

The art pays good homage to the classic design that could of been the original trilogy.

Not bad, not bad at all.

It had a style to it and it was alive.

Me Likes DAT!

:)

While the Clone Wars cartoon show was better than the prequel movies, the problem was who were you rooting for?

The misguided bureaucratic Jedi with their disposal people with their future child-murderer?

Lord Business in a robe?

The Separatist?

Of *course* the show is going to have some cartoon'esque elements to their design. I would bet the farm that the Disney line of toys, Happy Meals, posters, iPhone apps and everything else are all lined up to go with it. As I've often said, Disney isn't one to miss out on a marketing opportunity (especially when you paid $4 billion for the franchise... someone wants to recoup that investment).

Beyond that, I saw SW:ANH when I was 8 years old in 1977 and it is still blowing my mind completely. My parents didn't see it as anything more than a cute science fiction movie (which didn't really exist successfully as a genre before this movie), and my older sister and her friends never much cared for it either. It's *totally* aimed at kids. The kids who get their minds blown by all SW:R and E7 will potentially be us in 35 years if Disney's marketing arm does their job right.

Somehow I'd gotten it into my head that this was going to be traditional animation, so that trailer left me disappointed. And the pink Mandalorian is borderline offensive.

Still, looks pretty good.

But it's a lady. Barbie Fett, perhaps?

Her name's Sabine. She's got a thing for painting **** loudly and tagging imperial stuff.

That might sound cheesy and stupid to you, but I cackle madly at the idea of someone tagging the wing of an Imperial shuttle with a big rebel phallus.

No offense, ya'lls ****** dumb. It's based off the Ralph McQuarrie art.

Seriously go look at that and tell me I'm wrong. They even said in the first press release that was precisely what they were doing.

Doing a **** fine job, too.

People seem to be confused about something.

THANK. YOU.

I just want to point out to everyone, that the most dramatic fight in the trilogy had an evil old man cackling in his all-but-*******-rocking-chair while two dudes duked it out with laser swords and magic.

"It's supposed to be mature and super serious and geared towards adults."

Yes, lassoing giant steel camels in a winter wonderland, how very mature.

Oh my god. There is no hope for you.

No new hope will arise. NO NEW HOPE. ; _ ;

EDIT: No clue what happened to the formatting here, by the force it got messed up.

I was rooting for the teenaged Han and Lando, and the thirties-something Chewie.

I must not be alive then since I love the prequels (and originals).

You **** Vampire You!

Whatever the case is, Rebels looks hella' fine.

Also, get this. 'Fore I saw how they developed chopper as a character? I was apprehensive and unwanting of the series. "Oh look, a Corellian ship. Oh look. A generic sith character. How many apprentices did Vader have?"

Then I saw Chopper. And I saw that they cared about this project. That they really wanted it to feel like Star Wars.

And they're doing a **** fine job! And no, there's no disney-fying. Here's what happened.

They blended the Clone Wars style with Ralph Mcquarrie's style. The Clone Wars style looks, "Disney" because it was based off a 2D style- drawn by the same dude who did Samurai Jack.

There's a reason the 3D style of The Clone Wars and Rebels looks funky as hell.

CloneWarsAnimated.jpg

That's why.

TCW_cast_of_characters.jpg

I never liked the 3D style, personally. It always looked kriffin' weird to me. Preferred it in 2D. But hey, that's how it looked, and you know what?

I respect them for sticking to it, and integrating McQuarrie's art style into it.
_________________________________________________________________________

Using Ralph McQuarrie's art style not only banks on the massive vault of artwork they have to use, but it is also a matter of deference and respect to the original vision of Star Wars.

And that's good. It's good because it knows where to pay homage. It knows what makes Star Wars, Star Wars.

Just remember, love or hate the prequels, OT, Clone Wars or EU, we all love the same thing, we're all here for the same reason.

Star_wars_logo.jpg

____________________________________________________________________________________

And we need to remember that. That despite disagreements, this is why we're here.

And there's no better chance for Prequel and OT fans to meet, than to view Rebels and discuss it. We 20-30something year olds aren't the new generation anymore. Our era is over. It's time for the new kids.

And you should be happy, because the new kids are going to see Star Wars as purists always thought it should be.

We'll probably see more political drama here and there, we'll probably see more intrigue- Lucas isn't gone, never ever will be. But he's handed the reins over to people he never expected to.

Us.

The fans. Nothing but Star Wars fans, are working on Star Wars now- everyone working on it kriffing loves it. If I were George, I'd be full of pride, and confident that it was in good hands.

It's time for us to put our grievances aside and pass the lightsaber.

It's their time now, and we should believe that they can do it.

They deserve that much.

I does have bad plots. But some of its plots rival the OT in quality. The 1st season was especially rough though (like first season of ST:TNG bad), but it does drastically improve from there.

What I saw of Season 2 was freaking awesome.

That second battle of geonosis, dude. ****.
