Can FCS active Push the Limit?

By Torresse, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can FCS active Push the Limit? It doesnt call it an action nor a free action, but I just wanted to be sure.

Thought about corran with PTL, FCS, R7T1 for a huge combo

focus, shoot, target lock, shoot, target lock, boost, target lock

Fire Control System is not an action. The word 'action' is not printed on the card.

It can't trigger Push The Limit.

Where is that last target lock coming from? Although, I'm not sure what good "target lock, boost, target lock" would be anyway, since you can only have one target lock at a time with that ship.

it would go on a new ship. I just was trying to come up with a silly combo with Corran

FCS isn't an action, and if it were, it would mess up your chain anyway since you can't perform the same action twice in a single round. That said, nothing would stop you from taking PTL with your focus. Then it would be focus, PTL to R7T1, (stress), shoot, TL, shoot, TL.

Since FCS isn't an action I can TL, shoot, TL on that ship again in the same round, correct? If it was an action you'd never be able to use it the same round you initially acquired a TL

Yes. The various actions have a "non" action wording.

The difference is that during your action phase you perform a Target Lock action, FCS allows you to "Acquire" a target lock on the ship you fired on. basically you get it for free, no action required.

This is also true of R7-T1 that you acquire a TL but get a free Boost action.

Acquiring a target lock would require you to remove an existing target lock if present, because a ship cannot target more than one enemy ship unless it has a Weapons Engineer.

...see the FAQ, pg. 4:

Acquiring a Target Lock

When an ability instructs you to acquire a target lock, this is different than performing an ‘acquire a target lock’ action. It is possible to acquire a target lock while stressed, and a ship can acquire a target lock multiple times during the same round. A ship can only perform one ‘acquire a target lock’ action per round. Each ship is able to maintain one target lock, unless stated otherwise by a game effect.

Fire-Control System lets you acquire a Target Lock on the defender after resolving an attack. This is not a "free action", and thus you may acquire the Target Lock even if you did the action earlier in the round. You may also acquire this Target Lock even if you're currently stressed (since it isn't an action). However, a given ship may only have one blue Target Lock token at any given time, unless a game effect says otherwise. So if you Target Lock Ship A as an action, then attack Ship B, if you acquire a Target Lock on Ship B, the Target Lock on Ship A goes away. To counter this, you don't have to acquire a Target Lock if you don't want to (often times you'll be taking a potshot at a secondary target, and you might want to retain the lock on the primary target for a later round). I use Fire-Control Systems a lot, and I've started using the terminology "retain/recover" (if I used the Target Lock during the attack) and "transfer" (if I attacked a different ship and wanted to swap out the lock). Anyways, because the Target Lock from Fire-Control System isn't an action, it cannot trigger Push the Limit.

Since I thought of it, it may bear mention; a ship with Fire-Control System and Weapons Engineer (so far only possible on the Lambda Shuttle and the B-wing/E2) after attacking may acquire a Target Lock on the defender, then acquire a second Target Lock on anything else in range, due to the Weapons Engineer card's wording:

You may maintain 2 target locks (only 1 per enemy ship). When you acquire a target lock, you may lock onto 2 different ships.

Torresse, since you mentioned playing around with a Corran combo, try giving him Fire-Control System and Marksmanship. He'll have Marksmanship (i.e. Super Focus) for both of the attacks he'll make whenever he double attacks...

must

Once per round, after you perform an action, you may perform 1 free action shown in your action bar. Then receive 1 stress token.
