Never Tell Me The Odds

By Funkleton, in X-Wing

I took an absolute spanking this afternoon from a my mate running a mini howl swarm + echo build, up against a Etahn / Ten Numb build with a gold squad Y-wing with ICT.

Without wishing to make excuses,my head wasn't really in the game ( I think I was having too much fun with my new magnetic game mat to think about what I was doing) so I opened very badly and caught the full force of a slippery Echo right up the jacksie and lost Ten Numb very cheaply in the first exchange - Etan went down to down to 1 hull point in the next round, and it was all over bar the shouting.

The only thing that caused him any problems was the Ion turret on GSP, I narrowly missed running echo off the board and caused him all kinds of maneuvering problems with his remaining TIES (Etahn managed to get one before he bought it)

So I'm thinking lots of ships with 360 arcs and a few ICT's to boot.

Ladies and gentlement I bring you:

Never Tell Me The Odds!

Chewbacca
Draw Their Fire, C3-PO, Gunner, Millennium Falcon
Gold Squadron Pilot #1
R2 Astromech, Ion Cannon Turret
Gold Squadron Pilot #2
R2 Astromech, Ion Cannon Turret
I'm wondering about Gunner though - seems pricey - but then maybe a Hail Mary like that should be.
any thoughts?
ps Is it just me or does anyone else think that the designers at FFG had that phrase in mind when they came up with the ability for the C-3PO card?

Pricey, but the odds of it working when coming in to play are probably considerably less than 3720 to 1

Drop Gunner to Han Solo Crew Card and upgrade 1 of the R2 Units on a Y-Wing to R3-A2, of course Han Solo crew and MF title dont really play well together so drop the title as well.

This gives you 2 more points to spend, you could drop the other R2 astro and have 3 points to spend on a better Astro for that Y-Wing or an EPT on Chewy (VI, DTF, Predator, PTL etc). Astro options could be…… ah actually there aren’t really any, maybe stick with the R2 Astro and VI or DTF on Chewy.

Replace A Gold Sq w/ Roark (Also with ICT) with a PS12 you can pick and choose who has PS12 and shoots at the decloaked phantom

Chewbacca (42)
Predator (3)
Gunner (5)
Recon Specialist (3)

Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)
Fire-Control System (2)

Total: 100

A list almost like this has worked well for me in the past havent taken it against a phantom yet but i think it could do well.

Agianst 2 interceptors and 3 ties it worked very well

TCFB, good point.

Wing Nut, that Blue is going to be absolutely eaten alive. For pretty much any Phantom, it would be like that scene with Quicksliver from X-Men Days of Future Past.

Heh. "Etahn Alive". That's a good name for a squad...

If your going to take chewie and gunner, why not swap chewie out for Han?

C-3P0 is definitely Tell Me The Odds.

Does anyone else think that full 360 lists are boring as... working?

I personally find a very little joy of those lists as this is, after all, a manouvering game.

Used to think the same as you but a turret list still has to maneuver, the arcs are just different shapes. The turrets only work at R1-2 so the Y-wing pilot's got to stay close to the TIE fighters, which are trying to position themselves at Range 3 where the Ion Cannon Turret can't shoot back. Even the Falcon needs to maneuver: while it can always shoot back it needs to dodge those TIEs to minimise the amounts of shots it's taking (use the Falcon like a stationary gun platform and a good enemy wing commander will simply focusfire it to space dust) and try and get in for those Range 1 shots: at Range 3 the TIE interceptors and TIE defenders have the advantage.

Turrets don't cancel out maneuvering, they just change it. You may have turrets but they don't.

With a squad name like that, Han should be involved.

I went 3-3 at a local tournament with a very similar build. 3 turrets means you don't really have to worry too much about keeping enemies in arc, but it also means your damage output is low - you maximum damage output per turn is 12, assuming all ships using primary weapons in range one. Your more likely damage output is going to be 5, before your opponent rolls defence dice. That's not much.

The squad's potential for board control means it can be really effective against other low model count builds. If you're facing any more than 4 ships though, it will start to become an uphill battle.

you're absolutely right of course :)

so maybe add a little more punch to the squad with perhaps a B-wing as per admat's suggestion might be good move - or perhaps a pair of Bandit Squadron Pilots ?

I ran all turrets (Chewie,Kyle, gold squad) against a 6 ship rebel list.

The first pass was dicey, but once he got behind me he tried to turn to my 6, and hit a lot of asteroids. I ioned the ones that didn't hit rocks, and Chewie blew the rest away.
