This is a genuine question, not just a nitpick:

When people write "Hans" Solo, instead of his proper name, Han, what are they doing?

Is it:

-A Typo

-A playful nickname,

or,

-A genuine regional/foreign variation in the name, like "Biggles" in the UK.

Of course, it could be all three of these depending on the writer, but I have seen it enough recently in posts to wonder if it's not intentional, because that's the name he is given in certain languages.

I would suspect autocorrect. There are people in German-speaking countries (and elsewhere, I guess) who are actually called Hans. I don't think that "Han" is an actually first name anywhere (though I believe it is a surname in China). Thus, phones autocorrect to what they believe the correct spelling would be.

Well, autocorrect is the most uninteresting answer, but also the most likely culprit.

I must admit, it drives me a little batty when people make an association between Han Solo and my son who happens to be named Hans.

"Did you name him after Hans Solo?" No, I did not. He is also not named after any Hanks and I did not mis-type "hand" because the S and D are just so darn close together.

But im fairly certain it is Han not Hans

I remember seeing a comic book ad way back in the late '70s for the Kenner Star Wars action figures. One of them was labeled as "Hans Solo".
