New to the game w/ questions...

By punyhuman07, in X-Wing

Hey everyone hows it going? Been long time player of both ttg And CCg but had taken a break from it for about 5 or so years. Played everything from Heroclix, to Vs system to Pokemon lol. But X-wing has caught my attention. I'm here in Austin Texas and found a couple local shops here that do run games so i plan on going and checking them out. Been looking online at videos and shopping around to see different types of prices. But one thing I haven't been able to truly find is how long this game is expected to last even if that question can be asked. I know the Stars wars universe is huge and i'm hoping with going beyond just what is in movies and what not makes this truly amazing but I know a game can end at any giving moment if the support is lost. i know it is still actively in development with a new wave just being released and a wave 5 on the horizon. So not trying to start anything or even step on any ones toes I just want to get my ducks in row before I make the investment in a new game thanks everyone And hope to oneday meet some of the locals and get playing

This game has been around since 2012, if I'm not mistaken. And outside of a few delays, it's been pretty well supported from go, and that doesn't appear to be changing.

Even if the game dried up today, there are so many tactics and strategies to filter through and get a grip on that, realistically, it's got years left on its lifespan.

Especially with the new movies coming out. We don't know if we'll be getting any new ships, but interest in Star Wars as a whole isn't leaving.

No one has any idea. There's a handful of decent EU ships left to be made, and probably a wave's worth of ships that could come from that new Rebels cartoon coming out in a couple months. There are still some capital ships that can be made, and a couple repaint packs with new pilots and upgrades for existing ships. After that, the well looks a bit dry. That could last another year and a half after Wave 5 is released, though, which would put us into spring 2016.

Also, many people speculate that once FFG runs out of viable EU ships, it'll reboot the game with prequel ships or ships from the new trilogy. There's been no indication that FFG would do that, though; it's just speculation.

We just had wave 4 released, wave 5 spoiled, and waiting on Imperial huge ship news (most likely a Gen Con news release) and rebel aces pack due later this quarter.

This game is doing very well. Tournament scene is picking up steam. Players finding games localy at FLGS's and online via Vassal.

It is a fun strategy game that can last half an hour (with 50 pt squads) or go for hours with Team Epic play 400 pts vs 400 points. It depends on the level you and your play group want to play at.

The game appears to be growing. I don't think it has peaked yet. Not even close. I play every Sunday at my local gaming store, and I routinely see new players show up - just last week we had something like 4 brand new players show up for their first time to play the game.

Also all of the old EU stuff is rebranded as Star Wars "Legends", so it is still available to be used for stuff. So even though they "got rid" of it all, they didn't really "Get rid" of anything. They just set it aside and can pull whatever they need from it. That being said, there is a TON of content available.

Thanks guys just seeing what my different options are out there thanks for getting back with me

I say your investment is pretty safe. I don't see this game dying in a year or two. With 6 movies coming out within the next decade, FFG will have a ton of content to draw from. If it does die, at least you got some cool looking models!
