Death Star Turbolaser Towers As New Expansion?

By Xenomech, in X-Wing

Would anyone else be interested in official Death Star Turbolaser Towers as an official expansion from FFG? Maybe in a set of four (as opposed to being sold individually as part of a regular wave)? I think it would be kind of cool.

I think it would be cool for cinematic play

Could be cool, but I wouldn't be "thrilled".

People have been asking for those for a while.

I'd very much like to see a Battle of Yavin expansion which shows a little love to the Y-wing and TIE Adv, as well as adding some themed missions along those lines.

However I can't see TL Turrets getting much use outside that kind of thematic play scenario - so I'd be happy with a token rather than a mini

At this point I don't think it's very likely that we'll see 3D terrain for this game. Certainly our starfighters will be able to fly over any sort of ground terrain, so 2D tokens make more sense. FFG could do both, of course, giving us the eye candy and playability at the same time.

Stop me if im wrong, but wasn't the whole point of Vader and the Tie's turning up was because the turbolaser towers couldn't hit the fast moving X-wings and even the Y-wings. They'd only be useful against the transports and the corvettes. Or am I on the wrong line of thought, apologies if so.

Definately could get behind a mixed assault on yavin IV box, maybe with a Tie advanced and Y-wing in? I know the X-wing would make more sense but in terms of releasing it, the Y-wing would be greatly appreciated

That was also teh gist of the pc games. The turbolaser emplacements on the capital ships weren't intended for tracking small targets, but the bigger slower ones. Consequently, they were pretty easy to dodge with almost no effort, but hit like a ton of bricks if you were unlucky enough to get tagged by one.

I always thought that the turbolasers should roll fewer ttack dice, but each hit causes multiple damage.

Same for all ordnance. The proton torps should have been 2 dice, but if you get a hit in, they do 2 damage and a crit.

The whole point of Vader and his TIE's showing up was because he was disobeying orders.

Tarkin didn't consider the small squadron of snubfighters to be a threat, so he didn't launch thousands of attack ships against the rebel fighters.

Vader took his personal Black squadron out, because Anakin loves being Anakin.

I think turbolasers would be a cool addition. Either as a flat token or as a 3D model It would give some more scope for scenarios.

I'm with Dave on this one. The development of turbolaser towers should be left to the unofficial market. I'd like to see some discussion on the best ruleset for capturing how they would work. Dave - you have a ruleset in your version of the trench mission, don't you?

Also, we can discuss the best 3rd-party turbolaser miniatures. Anybody have any thoughts on these? The ones on Fight's On! don't look quite right, but the price is certainly reasonable.

Out of curiosity.

How big do people think turbo laser towers should be for this game?

I have seen several third party laser towers and they seem to be all over the place in size.

There hasn't been (at least that I've seen) any word on them other than the quick preview in their coming-next-year video, but GF9 is supposed to be releasing some this year. They look modular, and awesome, and should (if their normal terrain is any indicator) be very affordable.

Check around the 1:30 mark.

Maybe I could see FFG with some token representing a weapon tower and then game stats (like the Senator's Shuttle) for it. IF you want a figure for it you'll have to figure that one out yourself. Perhaps it could go in a "Battle of Yavin" two pack which also features the Y-Wing and Advanced.

Sure the X-Wing make more sense in some ways but if you think about it Core + Yavin could give you all the ship types you would need for the battle at the end of the first StarWars movie.

My son and I would like to see the towers and this idea sounds cool too!

But to what degree is the Battle of Yavin more a thing of waves past. It seems like they're now mostly focusing on the material from the video games, rather than the mainstay of the OT.

If we are saying a "Yavin box set" or whatever you'd want to call a set with a Y-Wing and Advance as being "a thing of waves past" you are right it some respects. It can also be a rejuvenation of old pieces. It's not like the "Aces" packs are really all "new" material.

No they're not, but they're not Ep IV: ANH material either. They develop further those ships that were of a newer generation, rather than the generation of ships that were available when the Galactic Civil War started. Since then, wave 4 - with the glaring exception of the Z-95 - was mostly the post-Endor generation of starfighters.

Now, I'm not in favor of them producing ever more next-generation stuff, so I would welcome a Battle of Yavin set, but I'm not sure what kind of new material they could put in such a set other than turbolaser towers. Since I don't think turbolaser towers are going to see all that much regular play, I am skeptical of the added value of such a set.

The ones from Shapeways look pretty good, although somewhat pricey. The Fight's On towers look like they're made of stone bricks.

Exactly the same point I made very recently on here.

It's something all established players would want to buy plus a VERY solid second purchase to the base set.

Frankly I'm surprised FFG didn't do it a year ago it's so bleeding obvious.

Of course it did occur to me after posting that for ALL of the ship types present at the Battle of Yavin to be represented, you'd need one more.

What I would like it a Battle of Yavin that has tiels for the trench and exhaust port (that can be reversed as Rebel Base and Rebel Landing field. As for models I would like 1 Y-Wing, 1 Tie-Fighter (With 2 new pilots for each) and 2 Turbolaser towers.

I personally don't think it was as much Vader disobeying orders as being a separate chain of command He had his pilots and deployed them, Tarkin did not feel the necessity to deploy any but he didn't tell Vader not to deploy his

I don't about this will be a good idea, because it sounds great, but it left the skirmish to a Death Star battles, and it takes a lot of fun to the game, becuae it takes all the rest of locations, greettings.
