An introduction and a request for advice

By Trebor Minntt, in X-Wing

Hi, im new to the forums and newish to the game.

I bought into X-Wing last month after using spme friends models for a while andmI'm collecting 100% rebel (my group has a 100% Imperial player and 2 players who collect both sides). The advice I need is what to get next to bolsted my force. Currently I have-

5x X-Wing

2x B-Wing

1x E-Wing

1x Z95

1x Falcon

1x Rebel Transport

I'm pretty sure I want to buy a HWK and another 2 Z95's but I can't decide what else. I can afford another 2 small ships this month and am contemplating 2 more E-Wings as I eventually want at least 3 of each ship but im wondering if perhaps I should get 2 A-Wings instead (in time to have 3 A's and 3 B's when Rebel Aces arrives) or just something else entirely.

I prefer to have actual cards where possible so the cards in expansions do play a part in my general decision making process but my group is fine with proxies if needed.

So any advise for a sort of newbie?

Y wings!!

Looks like you need yourself a y wing brother

more Zs won't hurt either.

More z-95s would not hurt they are cheap and it never hurts to have more ships on the board, a couple of y-wings would give you a few turret ships which are useful with tie phantoms about.

Welcome to the community.

Get the Tantive for C-3PO. He just makes Han lists so much tankier.

Get tantive for the sweet model, it just makes your shelf look so much smaller.

Hmmmmm, it looks like Y-Wings are out of stock at my preferred retailer at the moment and I've had a ton of issues ordering from Amazon recently. Would you recommend multiple Y's is I can get my hands on them? Personally I've never flown more than one at a time and not experianced much success with them.

more Zs won't hurt either.

I thought about jumping right up to 5 Z95s but I'd prefer some variety first.

if I could reliably get if for less than £62 (which is what about $106?) I would, I've used that set up but I can't. Plus it is limited in use compared to smaller ships.

You don't want more than two Ys, you'll take them for the ion cannon if someone's playing a phantom but they lack the firepower of the b-wing and x-wing.

I agree with Y-wing, and more Z95s, but what about the A-Wing. Where is the love? Not sure about your budget, you should have at least one or wait and grab the Rebel Aces.

Chaos cards I think it is has it on sale because they are moving, think it was £56ish when I looked.

Well my budget this month runs to around 5 small ships, which is £50 depending on where you buy from. I'm thinking that the HWK and 2 Z95s will take up 3 of those. As is mentioned, I want 3 A-Wings eventually and I'll definately be picking up Rebel Aces to account for one of thlse becuase I love the blue A-Wing and I need a 3rd B-Wing.

Really? I'll check that out just in case, its a little beyond my budget but I might be able to make an exception.

Due to your decision to not buy anything imperial I would certainly suggest 1-2 A-Wings if only for the Push The Limit upgrade cards (you get 2 in the imperial Aces set but obviously you won't be getting that)

No more than 2 then get the Rebel Aces when it arrives with it's 3 Chardaan refits.

Also unless you’re really into Epic I wouldn’t suggest getting more than 1 E-Wing, unless of course you need more than 1 Advanced Sensors (because you won't have another from the Imperial Shuttle) I haven’t seen a list with more than 1 E-Wing in it and I can't imagine running Etahn and Coran in the same list.

Five X-Wings? I guess you may want them for epic but that is a lot. It also warrants the question "how did they come?" because you can get them via core set (2 cores is often recommended), Expansion (1 for Wedge/Garven), and Rebel Transport (again you want 1 for the pilots).

Looking at your list you're missing the HWK (all the pilots can be useful although running multiples is often discouraged), Y-Wing (slow and steady, Dutch is ok support ship but you want it as a Turret platform which you currently lack, also brings in more Astromechs), and A-Wing (PtL is the big upgrade you find there although Green Squadron Pilot can see use as a flanker). I'd say you should want one of each of those to round out your selections if nothing else.

With what you have I'd say YES to more Z-95s. I can easily see two as a replacement for a more expensive single ship and the two named pilots have their uses. I can also easily see running three or more as a Rebel swarm if that's your cup of tea. I'm not sure how useful a second E-Wing is considering its cost but you may want the Advanced Sensors for your B-Wings. On the unreleased front I'm thinking that one Rebel Aces pack meshes nicely with one of each A-Wing and B-Wing expansions.

One area of concern is that if you want to play with the "actual" upgrade cards you're going to need to pick up Imperial ships as well or be able to steal/borrow them from your friends.

Man, you need a Y-wing! They're becoming ever more precious against these pesky phantoms. Ion turrets are a lifesaver.
And welcome to the game!

I'd suggest at least one A-wing, another E-wing and a couple Y-wings.. a pair of E's alongside Chewbacca is potent. A-wings will be really good when Aces is out, and Y-wings for all above named reasons....and Dutch

get the A-wings. They have push the limit card in the pack. You will use that a lot.

You should be able to find some Y-wings in amazon or eBay for a decent price. I would definitely go for that next. It's my favorite rebel ship. So many times the Ion turret has snuck through at the right time to totally mess my opponents plans.

Actually to the OP I'd recommend more based on his/her play style. So...have developed a feel? Do you prefer tankier (B-Wing/Y-Wing) or more agile (X/E Wing) craft? Do you like lots of ships (Z-95 swarms) or fewer but more options/customizations (YT-1300). What kind of play? Are you sticking with 100 point lists, escalation, epic play or something else more often?

Maybe try some proxy games and see what fits better before buying?

And do take a look at Imperials...does not hurt to learn how they fly either so you reduce the chance of being surprised by "they can do what?" :D though running proxies here also works.

And of course the most important factor: what is the most fun?

Yeah i got five X-Wings by trading the two TIEs in my core box for 2 core box X-Wings with the Imperial player in my group and then i got an X-Wing expansion for the pilots and the 5th came with the Transport. That said, i do rather like epic play so it works out fine.

I do want more advanced sensor cards but i'm happy to proxy for now since most folk tend to think that a second E-Wing isn't worth it just yet.

As it stands i've picked up 2 more Z95s and a HWK and will wait until my vendor has some Y's in stock, unless i get impatient at which point i'll get 2 A-Wings.

I am pretty set on not picking up Imperials for now though. I can borrow cards i need if it's important and my goup are happy for me to proxy cards if need be. I know it's not the point of the game but i simply don't have the storage space for both forces and i've spent enough in a month on just rebels, my wife would kill me if i spent that on imperials as well.....

What do i like to play? Thats tough, i've probably only played a dozen games. I quite like a force that is a little forgiving since i'm not 100% tactically sound just yet.

Well I strongly recomend you an a HWK-290, even with the fragility, it could be very useful to get support to others ships, greettings.
