An Xwing gundam variant

By nikk whyte, in X-Wing

I'm probably not the first person to realize that you could make the exact same game with gundams, but it totally works.

Maneuver dials, same

Attack dice, same

Evade dice, same

Multiple pilots per unit, same

Weapons and system upgrades, same

The only thing that may need to be tweaked is range. Some gundams have very few ranged weapon options, relying on hand to hand. And I don't agree with using the head-mounted Vulcan machine guns as their base ranged attack.

Range, tweaked? Hardly. Plenty had ranged weapons.

And that's where upgrade cards come in. What if your upgrade card dictated what type of weapon you were using? Guns having certain traits. Some being so large that, despite their power, take away agility?

Stuff like that.

I was thinking specifically of the Shenlong and Altron gundams from gundam wing. Both had no ranged weapons.

Same goes for shining and burning gundam.

I've thought about this. Personally, the best idea would be to split up into 2 different attack values, and then you have 2 different range rulers for ranged and melee.

I would play this...

And that beam cannon from the gundam wing.

Range 5, anything touched by it is destroyed :D

Joking aside, I could see this working, though figuring out hand to hand and actions to represent this better would take some work.

Universal Century would be best for a Gundam Flight Path game IMHO. Tons of suits and mobile armors for large and epic craft. And I cannot think of a single suit that did not have a major ranged weapon in UC. Also, the rank and file suits actually had a chance against the advanced Gundams.

Other Gundam series I don't think could cut it. In G-Gundam, almost everything is hand to hand. In Wing and 00 (more so wing), hundreds of rank and file troops at a time were no match for a couple of Gundams. Either the Gundams would have to be toned down to the point where there is NO fluff representation at all, or they would simply be the only suit worth taking. Also, quite a few suits in both series were specialized for melee.

Love the idea though. I have already planned on painting a Phantom red and referring to him as The Red Comet.

The question would be which Universe would you set it in (UC, AC, CE etc)? Or would you have a free for all?

The melee combat element could be an interesting game mechanic to get right, and would require some care and tweaking.

In the end though, if it had UC equipment I would so be buying. Zaku swarm anyone?

Deathscythe cloak...

Yeah, I'm a fan of After Colony.

Eh. I don't see it at all.

Gundams are too nimble to be restricted to the template movement. That said, I only followed Wing, so maybe a different setting has a better fit.

I liked the 08th MS team. Would love seeing that stuff!

Im universal Century all the way. There is a new version of the original series in production now based on manga by the original creators.

And there are even approx 1/300 figures that are really good

You can find them cheaper but that was the first example that popped up. They are what we used when doing a Gundam tactical rpg

Yeah, I probably should've mentioned that all my thoughts on such a game are colored by 00. Haven't really gotten a chance to watch the others, though I remember my friends really being into Wing back in the day.

The Universal Century is the original Gundam timeline. Its composed of 4 full series, about a half dozen ova series, and a couple movies. Up until the later parts of the timeline, the suits are far clunkier than in later series like Wing.

Added advantage to UC would be plenty of huge ships for both sides. Not so advantageous for my wallet.

When asked what other franchise ffg should pick up next I suggested Alien. Space marines vs. xenomorphs sounds like a great ground based game!

... oh, Gundam.

:P

I'm all for UC. I would spend so much money
