The Great Debate #45: Glaaki vs. Yibb-Tstll

Who is more difficult?

vs.

Yibb-Tstll.png

Yibb-Tstll is annoying, but Glakki is a badass. his abilities work too well together. Double successes against Yibb-Tstll is bad, but if you collect enough clues his modifier would be neglectible and he has no resistance/immunity. Glaaki, on the other hand, would keep spawning his children even in the final battle... outch. What say you?

Previous Great Debates

While I think that Glaaki is strong, I think he tends to be over-estimated. At least, within my group Yibb has a higher win ratio against my group, so I am gonna go with Yibb.

Glakki would not spawn his children in the final battle as it says "While Glakki stirs in its slumber...". Once the GOO awakens you no longer use its slumber ability.

Wrong. The "stir in slumber" is just a thematic wording for "if [name] is the ancient one".

Eh, ah I was looking at the spawn monster ability not the "each time an investigator is devoured the terror track is moved". But also I guess Cthulhu would also apply as a GOO with a "slumber ability" that would remain even after he was awakened.

EDIT: Actually looking at the two GOO and remembering others, I think in exactly what context the center rules apply is a little more ambiguious that it appears at first glance.

Of course, if one took a look at the DH rules, one might think differently gui%C3%B1o.gif :

"Glaaki

The Servants of Glaaki can come into play – and their
special abilities take effect – even during the final battle,
although the Servants cannot directly participate in the
fight. At the end of the game, keep track of which
Servants of Glaaki were in play. Those Servants not in
play can still enter play as Glaaki’s attack raises the terror
level, causing Allies to be discarded. Once all of the
Servants have “entered play,” they have no further effect
on game play." (p. 8)

And to the matter at hand...?

Yibb-Tstll is indeed annoying. But Glaaki makes me wet my pants everytime I draw him.

Glaaki is my arch-nemesis. And I'm not the only one who loathes the Space Slug.

I'm with Tibs (as rare as that is). Glaaki is monstrous. Once Glaaki gets on a tear, you will suddenly find your Investigators standing in the Streets naked and shivering. And if indeed you are naked and shivering, that also means you have that fewer rounds in which to defeat him when he gibbers after you. "Hooray. I have 4 rounds to...uh...spit on him."

This is not to say Yibb is by ANY means a pushover. Yibb is the only Ancient One who makes me paranoid about a resource I'm SUPPOSED to want more of! How **** weird is it to have an endgame with 4 Investigators at 5 Clues each, trying to figure out how to waste a few to gather a few more before he awakens.

Frankly, these are two of the worst Final Battles ever, for that growing feeling of BLACK HOPELESSNESS. Even if you did a crackerjack job of suppressing the Terror Track, once Glaaki wakes up, he'll just slowly roll it up himself. And every round, you find yourself getting back to that naked-and-shivering state of uselessness. Yibb, on the other hand, just takes the draw out of the poker. No Clues: your roll is your roll. Oh...and you need to roll TWICE as good as you usually do. Without Clues. Aw, but you didn't need Clues anyway, because Yibb's attack has NOTHING to do with your skills. I've seen Yibb take down EVERYONE in one freakin' round because we all had 1 Focus (MEAN!!!). I especially love that little Blessed clause FFG threw in: "What the hell! It won't help for long!"

How did Yibb killed you all in one round? Yibb only attacks the first player... :/

First of all, I didn't really notice that you and I disagree on things. I need to be more observant O:)

Second—doesn't Yibb's attack only affect one investigator per turn? Or when you meant "round" did you mean "where everyone had a chance to defend"?

Yeah Yibb sucks. However in my last game with her I managed to win during final combat. Having Amanda was a big plus—rolling two blessings was another. And we actually had sanity to use spells! This might have been the first time where the card "spells have a sanity cost of 0" came in handy during final battle. We smoked the eyeball queen.

Yeah, we do. Sorta often. But we're too civil about it to be interesting enough to be remembered. (I don't mind that one bit.)

Aw, DAMMIT. Yeah, that was defective language on my part. I did indeed mean "the first time Yibb took her shot at any given player." Techincally that would be 4 rounds, as the party diminished every round. (It was lunchtime and I was rushing my post. Foolish!) I notice I also neglected to remember Yibb is symbolically female.

I cast my vote for Glaaki, though both are atrociously difficult. I just always seem to get a disproportionate amount of monster surges with Glaaki, it's uncanny...

In terms of badassness Glaaki is the most badass ancient one imo, especially with his plot cards. Also his pic=pure badass.

I haven't actually managed to beat glaaki yet, but I did only get dunwich last christmas...

I feel like such a noob preocupado.gif

Yes, but my vote is obviously for glaaki, he is just bad... llorando.gif

Don't feel bad. Glaaki is one of the hardest. I've had Dunwich since it came out in 06, and I've only managed to beat him down in combat once or twice. Sealing and closing are both tough too. Most other times he pulverizes us.

Yibb can be tricky...but Glaaki is just evil. Undead Slug-King for me.

I also have yet to beat him, but then again we haven't tried too often.

I don't have Kingsport, but Glaaki plagued our group for a long time, until we were just scared of playing him. The approach to the game matters a lot. It goes without saying that you strive to keep the terror low. But you need to be prepared for when it does rise. The way we do it is to make sure everybody has buffer items to protect their important equipment. Unfortunately, this typically leaves one investigator roaming around Arkham with no stuff. But it usually works out okay. We've gotten much better against him using this strategy. Our last game against him we got Disturbing the Dead (SO aggravating with Glaaki!) and eventually woke him up, winning with our last die in Final Combat. So good!

Yibb-Tstll is a bit of a pain, but my lot have beaten it a couple of times. Glaaki less often, although he usually come quite close. Iin the last game we had Glaaki down to 1 success required in the Final Battle. Or maybe that was Abhoth.

The problem with Abhoth, Glaaki and Yibb-Tstll is that they are all featureless gelatinous blobs and I can seldom remember which one killed me.

Although Charlie+enough clues vs. Glaaki=auto win.

Glaaki definitely is the worse. He just wears us down.

Yibb creamed us the first time we played him. After than, not so much. It does seem we always get the Press Pass when Yibb is the AO and can hardly use it. I know we've beaten him in final battle twice.

I think we have beaten Glaaki, but he's a groaner when pulled. We usually keep the terror level down, or thought we did, but with Glaaki it seems to go higher early and often. Once I had the Martial Artist and the first Spawn was the one taking skills. That wasn't fun. I saw it coming but wasn't fast enough to buy a second skill in time.

Thanks tibs gran_risa.gif

Although I did get a minus 11 on the combat check the first time I played with Yibb-Tstll, that was funny.
