Clarification on 'Push the Limit'

By Madflanker, in X-Wing

Hey all,

Am just wondering: if I have a ship that is stressed after PTL, will it still be able to receive free target locks either from Fire Control System, or from Dutch Vander's special ability?

For e.g. Corran Horn + PTL + FCS

OR

Corran Hor + PTL + Dutch Vander's special ability

Thanks in advance!

This is a good question, I had Cracken trying to hand out free actions yesterday and got told he couldn't give them to someone that was stressed, but the same game I ran Etahn with FCS and he got target locks while stressed.

You can get a free target lock... but not a free target lock action.

Stressed ships are NOT eligible to receive a free action. But they can be the recipient of free stuff, IE passed a focus token, or get a free target lock... the key word here is "action". If it doesn't say "action", then you can get a free one while stressed.

If you are stressed you CAN NOT:

Use a free action from Airen Cracken or Lando Calrissian.

Perform a free Boost or Barrel Roll after Attacking - with Turr Phennir

If you are stressed you CAN:

receive a focus token from Kyle Katarn or Garven Dreis.

Acquire a Target Lock via Dutch's ability

Receive a Blue Target Lock token from Colonel Jendon

just some examples

Yup. Great rundown and examples. Basically you cannot do anything with the wording [Action] so also no using of Adv. Sensors

+1000 to Carbbok's explanation... excellently done.

What if Hobbie is stressed. Can he still perform a target lock action, which would clear the stress and allow him to get a target lock?

His card text reads, "When you acquire or spend a target lock, you may remove 1 stress token from your ship."

I played him and got confused on how can I perform the target lock action, if I am stressed...yet, it says when acquiring a target lock to remove 1 stress token...

Thanks guys!

So the way I read it, Corran Horn WILL be able to acquire a free target lock after attacking with FCS even when he's stressed right?

FCS reads: "After you perform an attack, you may acquire a target lock on the defender". No 'action', therefore ok.

Conversely, Whisper WILL NOT be able to cloak after attacking with 'Advanced Cloaking Device'.

ACD reads: "After you perform an attack, you may perform a free cloak action"

Am I right in my interpretation?

Correct on both counts.

I guess it depends:

Scenario 1: Hobbie is stressed. He CANNOT perform a target lock action since he is stressed. Therefore he does not clear the stress, and does not get a target lock.

Scenario 2: Hobbie is stressed. But he ALREADY had a target lock from before. He SPENDS the target lock, and thus he clears the stress.

Scenario 3: Hobbie is stressed. He does not have a target lock from before. He ACQUIRES a target lock from either FCS or Dutch. He clears the stress. He is free to perform actions on his action bar.

No, you cannot perform a target lock action while stressed. To clear that stress, you must receive the ability to acquire a target lock via a non-action, IE Dutch's card ability. OR, if you already had a target lock, like if you acquired a target lock, did not spend it, K-turned to receive a stress, and then spent it, you lose the stress. But, sadly, he cannot perform a target lock action of his own accord if he already has a stress token.

This right here is perfect. I've used Hobbie and Dutch together in every epic game since I found this out. It's all about the wording on Dutch's card. Since it doesn't say "take a target lock action " it's fine, and Hobbie can do it while stressed.

Thanks for the clarifications people!

Tycho is the only one can do actions while stressed.

and why can Tycho do this? BECAUSE TYCHO DOESN'T CARE!!!

Just like the Honey Badger.

How would that be possible? The X-Wing does not have a Sensor Slot in the Upgrade Bar.

Naturally not possible via FCS, but possible from/via Dutch

That was my thinking. In the first game I played with him, I performed a K-turn and gained stress. I went to acquire a target lock and thought, wait a minute...how can I perform an action if I am already stressed? I decided he could not and he died in a blaze of glory from Turr. I introduced my nephews to this game and was shocked at how quickly they figured out the importance of pilot skill, including giving Turr veteran instincts.

Kind of a bummer...I was hoping somehow his card ability meant he could take a target lock action, which would clear the stress while gaining the target lock. Oh well, glad I played him correctly and it gives more thought to how to pair him and what decisions to make when flying him.
