Imperial on a budget, what do I buy next?

By DJB2, in X-Wing

I'm an Imperial player with five TIE fighters, one Interceptor and one Defender. I only have enough money right now for a couple more ships. (eg Imperial aces OR a single Firespray OR two separate small ships)

TIE Bomber? Firespray? Phantom? TIE Advanced? Lamda? (lol I don't think I'd get the Lamda mainly because its ugly, rather than its debatable in game usefulness.)

I'm thinking the Imperial aces are my next purchase, but I'd love to hear what people think ^_^

I would say Phantom and Bomber for now. Lower points possible then Firespray which opens up for more fun list building.

The Phantom is so much fun to fly as well.

After that I would go Firespray. Very good ship with some nice upgrade cards as well.

You're not going to get much mileage out of a single Bomber. Firespray or Phantom would be fine, depending on your experience with the game and tactical preference.

After seeing Phantom in action I'd say grab it and run.

I Think 1 bomber could be nice. Load up with a bomb and a missle and you land around 22p. They are quite tanky and the model is very nice to (=

If you already don't have a firespray you won't get as much out of a phantom (Veteran Instincts).

So either Firespray or Imperial aces. If you already have an interceptor, i would go with Imperial aces, because it would open up a lot of possibilities. Afterwards, Firespray, and then phantom.

You want a phantom my friend, and you could get an advanced so you can take Vader.

Phantom or Firespray, but you'll want Veteran Instincts for the named phantom pilots, and that only comes with the firespray and millennium falcon. I love the tie bomber, but I think they're best in groups so you might want to hold off on it, and the tie advanced is pretty weak so I wouldn't bother with it for now.

Also, the Lambda is not ugly, it's a beautiful moon cow, do not disrespect her! But I would avoid it until you're more experienced with maneuvering large ships.

About Veterna Instincts and Phantom very true. Didnt think about that one.

Would recomend Firespray and then after Phantom then.

Buing the Firespray would also give you Heavy Laser Cannon for the Defender which is very nice. And stealth device which I find fun on for example Dark Curse and Interceptors such as Sontir Fel

Get a Firespray, then get imperial aces.

Interesting that there's isn't much love for the Imperial Aces. :P

I'll go for the Firespray then, though having just checked my bank account it'll have to wait until next month :-S

Thanks for the help guys :-)

Are you planning on playing in tourneys or just casual games with mates? If it's casual with mates i'd avoid the imp aces (you can use your existing interceptor as an ace (dial is the same and all the pilot/upgrade cards can be found online). tbh there aren't any wrong answers as all the ships have their pros/cons and so it comes down to personal taste (you already dislike the lambda-ya heathen :P )

A positive for the Firespray (beyond the ship/options it gives you itself) is that it'll give you chance to practice encompassing large base ships into your piloting...

Aces was my first buy. :D Fits more my style of nimble ships. That said your list has quite a bunch of them so I'd consider capitalizing on that with Aces which has a bunch of nice upgrades such as 2x Push the Limit.

Or perhaps I would look into getting into something you do not have, a large ship, i.e. Firespray...which also has nice upgrades.

Between the two...I'd probably get the Firespray first to get used to big ship handling. It also makes a decent core ship to fly with flankers/escorts with you have a bunch of. But pick up Aces right after. Aces just has so many nice shinies for fighters.

This is a competitive list:

Howlrunner + Swarm Tactics

Mauler + Swarm Tactics

Academy TIE

Academy TIE

Alpha Squadron

Alpha Squadron

So you would need 1 more Interceptor. To that end, Id get the Imperial Aces right away.

Beyond that you need to buy a Firespray and a Phantom.

Get a Firespray, then get imperial aces.

^This... Phantoms are nice but go with Royal Gaurd Intercepters first then make the jump to Phantoms.

I'd say Phantom. Best Imperial bang for your buck, looks like.

I'm sure this is no help but Firespray, Aces, Phantom are all good choices which bring different things to the table.

At present there are two reasons to get the Advanced: Darth Vader as a pilot and occasionally the Squad Leader upgrade.

I'm someone who believes the Bomber is much better when you get two or more. Sure, one can be "tanky" but loading one up makes it expensive and perhaps not as effective as you'd like it to be.

Get a Firespray, then get imperial aces.

Agreed.

You're not going to get much mileage out of a single Bomber.

I dunno - straight off the top of my head I'd suggest that Captain Jonus paired with anything that can carry a HLC would work well - particularly Krassis Trelix + HLC, but he also adds a new level of awesome fearitude to the already fearsome HLC equipped Defender - which the OP already has.

To the OP, if I was in your shoes I'd go for a variety of ships rather than 2 more ships that I already have (albeit with different paint jobs and some new upgrades) - for no other reason than greater variety of ships I can bring to the table, the more options I have and the more fun it is to play.

With that in mind I'd list your top 3 purchases right now (in no particular order) as Bomber, Phantom, and Firespray - ideally I'd try to scrape together enough cash to buy all three.

Aces has has a lot more than just paint jobs and upgrades. The pilots in that are frikkin awesome!

Bang for buck is Aces, upgrades are amazing and the two ships are outstanding.

I love my shuttles and firesprays are good. phantoms are broken in a good way and you need 2 bombers to be effective.

In the End I would tell you to go with Aces, as the Royal Guard are some of the best ships around for cost.

2 hull and shield upgrades

2 push the limits

Jax brings such hate.

Also you can run - 2 guard, 3 black squad which is all ps4 or better with room for upgrades.

I started playing X-wing with a goal to get one of each ship and see what I really liked before I expanded out, maybe it would not be a bad goal to tell you get the following first, (in this order)

1 of each phantom, bomber, advance

then move unto, aces, shuttle, firespray.

Your 4 tie fighters really full in a list if needed.

Also the Lamda is amazing, it is very good with 10 hp, 3 attack and the stop can block ships for turns, I promise you, if you skip it you will miss out as an imp player.

I like to run

1 Captain Jend (Ps6)

2 Royal Guard (Ps6)

2 Black Squad with Vet ins (ps6)

Total 100

Or 4 shuttles with ion (it's 40 hp and you can out last just about any list plus with the stop it's very easy to ion ships off the board.) also Darth Vader is sick and the best Pilot in the game seeing he can grant a kill of a ship when used at the correct time without the ability to dodge or miss.

You can also first turn make a perfect defense with the shuttles by having them 1 forward into each other making them get stuck (need two movement to clear the base) the position of them covers all angles and the can be bumped against a board edge. 3 with HLC or 4 with Ion against a board edge are very tough to deal with.

My order for you would be Firespray, Aces, then Phantom (somewhat interchangeable depending on stock or current funds).

Firespray is an excellent big ship, which is very tricky to learn how it moves until you get practice with it. This will also help you anticipate what other large ships can do when you play against them. Upgrades are pretty good too (HLC, gunner, vet instincts). Then I really like Imp aces (unless you don't like Interceptors). The pilots are pretty good, and the cards are amazing (hull upgrade, and Push the Limit will make them go from cool to freaking cool). Once you have some practice with PTL interceptors, an elite Phantom will then take it to the next level (and you'll have the VI from the Firespray).

After that, feel free to get more of what you like, or grab a single Tie Advanced (for Vader) and any number of Bombers (with three you can do a Jonus, Gammax2 and APx2 squad). I'd say shuttle last, its hard to fly, can't really dogfight, but can be fun in the doom (base with Vader crew) or the buzzsaw (gunner+FCS).

Aces has has a lot more than just paint jobs and upgrades. The pilots in that are frikkin awesome!

sure - but looking at it from the perspective of someone who has limited funds, I'd consider that as I already have the right dial and miniature I could just proxy the cards - so owning the set would be less of a priority to me than adding a bit more variety in terms of different ships
