KNOW YOUR PILOTS

By Explosive Ewok, in X-Wing

So something that I've been wanting to do for a while is label all of the pilots that we see in the game that appeared in the movies. The idea sounded cool to me, and I thought at least one or two of you out there would think it just as cool of an idea.

Along the way I decided to add Jan and Kyle from the live action cutscenes from Jedi Knight. Why not? Once I had all of that done, a part of me wanted to add the pilots that only appeared in comics, but I decided against it. Maybe I'll add them someday if enough people like the idea.

Episode IV: A New Hope

BACKSTABBER: Seen flying in formation with Darth Vader and Mauler Mithel in the trench. This guy ironically got one-shotted by Han from outside of his firing arc, thus Backstabber became the backstabbed.

Vader: I'll take them myself. Cover me.
Backstabber: Yes, sir.

os6h48.jpg

BIGGS DARKLIGHTER: Biggs was shown in the cockpit since the original movie, however his scene sans helmet was deleted. It made it's way back onto the big screen after the Special Edition.

Biggs: Hey, are you coming up with us?
Luke: I'll be right up there with you...

2h6aef9.jpg

CHEWBACCA: Everybody knows this furry guy. This screen cap is from Empire just because I liked the shot, but his first appearance obviously puts him in this movie.

Chewbacca: Aaaaagh whhrrr grahhh
Han: Yeah, you said it Chewie.

2469h79.jpg

DARK CURSE: Another one of those TIE pilots that seem to all look the same :P This guy was killed by Wedge when Luke couldn't shake him.

Luke: I can't shake him!
Wedge: I'm on him Luke, hold on!

28wla2t.jpg

DARTH VADER: I bet you never heard of this guy. He had a minor role in the film, with brief cameos in the next two.

Vader: I have you now!

2cz69fb.jpg

DUTCH VANDER: This guy you have to pay attention to catch without his helmet. During the briefing before the Death Star battle, General Dodonna mentions that the target area is only 2-meters wide. He, among others, express their unease over that news.

Dodonna: ...a small one-manned fighter should be able to penetrate it's outer defense.
Dutch: Pardon me for asking, sir, but what good are snub fighters going to be against that?

w1vf9c.jpg

GARVEN DREIS: In the same resurrected deleted scene as Biggs above, Garven makes his sans helmet debut.

Garven: All wings report in!

9gx05d.jpg

HAN SOLO: Scoundrel extraordinaire.

Han: Sorry about the mess...

2zqzqmd.jpg

JEK PORKINS: Everyone's favorite fireball. He thought he could hold it. Unfortunately for him, he rolled his last hit.

Porkins: I can hold it!

23vhyxg.jpg

LUKE SKYWALKER: Farm-boy turned intergalactic superstar.

Comms: Luke, you switched off your targeting computer. What's wrong?
Luke: Nothing. I'm alright.

EDIT: Keep scrolling for more. You can only add so many images per post, so I made four posts all together. I thought I could crank them out fast enough so they would be back to back, but it appears I was wrong. Anyway...enjoy! And fly casual.

I believe Darth Vander and Dutch Vader are brothers from a different mother.

Very nice, I like this! Needs a Wedge and Mauler Mithel entry I feel. Speaking of Mauler... is he the TIE pilot who just suddenly barrel rolls himself into Vader and the trench to his death like an idiot?

Go through all the old Decipher CCG cards. I've found quite a few pilots including Ten, both Zeds and Jendon to name a few.

This is excellent. Keep up the good work.

thanks!

Please do more! This is great!

I believe Darth Vander and Dutch Vader are brothers from a different mother.

Pretty much. "Vader" is Dutch for "Father." There's definitely something incestuous going on there...

MAULER MITHEL: The other pilot in formation with Vader and Backstabber. He's the one who so kindly clipped Vader and sent him flying far from the soon-to-be-exploded Death Star. What a pal.

Vader: What?!

Han: YAHOOO!!

Mauler: Look out!

28lb69h.jpg

WEDGE ANTILLES: Another pilot that makes his debut in ANH but didn't really give a good sans helmet appearance until ROTJ. Funfact - the guy sitting next to Luke during the Death Star briefing was supposed to be Wedge ("That's impossible, even for a computer!"). They ditched him because apparently he was a crap actor and went with Dennis Lawson as the Wedge we all know and love for the rest of the scenes.

Wedge: Look at the size of that thing!

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

BOBA FETT: Who doesn't love this guy? You know, aside from the people who don't like his card ability or talk smack on his bounty hunting skills. Maybe those people.

Boba: Put Captain Solo in the cargo hold.

2hwjx9f.jpg

HOBBIE KLIVIAN: Hobbie, Luke's been hit.

Leia: The energy shield will only be open for a short time, so you'll have to stay very close to your transports.

Hobbie: Two fighters against a Star Destroyer?

2lm5rhl.jpg

HOWLRUNNER: A pilot who was retconned into Empire, she along with Night Beast and another member of Obsidian Squadron chase the Millennium Falcon as it makes it's escape from Cloud City.

2uqkk77.jpg

LANDO CALRISSIAN: Card player, gambler, scoundrel. You'd like him.

Lando: What have you done to my ship?!

103gyut.jpg

NIGHT BEAST: Along with Howlrunner and a member of Obsidian Squadron, Night Beast followed the Falcon out of Bespin's atmosphere and watched it escape to lightspeed. Try not to make eye contact with Vader when you land, bro.

23rlkdz.jpg

TARN MISON: In a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, Tarn appears on-screen for about a half of a second. His EU fame lasted a bit longer.

2zxniap.jpg

WES JANSON: As Wedge's gunner, Wes became the first rebel to take down an AT-AT during the Battle of Hoth.

Wedge: Boo-ah, that got 'em!

Luke: I see ya Wedge, good work.

Wes: ........

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

AIREN CRACKEN: This guy ended up in one of the gunner ports during the Battle of Endor. Who knew?

w9a69i.jpg

Fantastic, I love it! Your cinema-fu is impressive... Most impressive...

Semi-relevant sidebar; has anyone else noticed that no Rebel pilot with a moustache survives the Battle of Yavin? (or Endor, for that matter, save the indomitable Lando Calrissian).

Thanks for sharing your findings!

Unfortunately, gold leader's name comes from an error somebody made. In the actual movie you can quite clearly hear gold 5 identify him a "Hutch", not "Dutch".

Dont forget Tycho

My new favorite thread! I had Wookiepedia'd a couple of Imp pilots, but this is a handy, VERY well-put-together list of everyone!. If I had a cookie, I'd give ya one.

As for Tycho, wasn't he the one that crashed into the Executor's bridge?

I think that was Arvel Crynid, Tycho's the one who enters the Death Star on Lando's wing, then leads some of the pursuing TIEs on a merry chase while Lando & Wedge deliver the kill shot.

Yeah, "Pops" called Dutch Hutch instead. I never knew until years later that it was wrong. Anyway, a few others: Ten Numb is seen in the Endor briefing before the shuttle Tydirium is launched, Lt. Blount is the second gunner of the Millenium Falcon during Endor, Horton Salm is Grey Leader during Endor, Arvel Crynyd is Green Leader during Endor, and Jake Farrell is the old A-Wing pilot who lead away TIE's when Red and Gold Squadrons when Lando asks them to break off.

Actually come to think of it, do we even see any of Tycho in the movies at all?

Also, isn't "Winged Gundark" part of Obsidian Squadron as well?

No that was Arvel that crashed into the SSD , and super ninja smack.

Edited by AngryAngel

I guess that explains his ability, then. He loves crashing into things.

ARVEL CRYNYD: We all know this guy. He's the one who decided to boost into the bridge of the Executor after taking a critical damage card.

Arvel: Green leader standing by.

2h6vv43.jpg

CAPTAIN YORR: This dapper dude never really wanted to look up at the massive Death Star in front of him, or the camera for that matter. Probably busy with his mobile squadron builder app...or flying. One of those.

Yorr: Command station, this is ST-321, code clearance blue. We're starting our approach, deactivate the security shield.

2yl5qhy.jpg

COLONEL JENDON: He doesn't have much to say. He's too busy trying to give one of his target locks to the TIE fighters escorting him.

1eb0hi.jpg

HORTON SALM: This guy was accidentally used as two different characters. Mr. Salm here is Grey leader, however in a later scene Wedge reacts to a scene where they show him gunning down an Interceptor by saying "Good shot, Red 2". Nice try, Wedge. I guess with that many pilots around you, you tend to forget people's names.

Horton: Grey leader, standing by.

5duh3m.jpg

JAKE FARREL: The first time this guy stood out to me was when they used him in the PC game Rebel Assault, where he trains you to use an A-Wing. Fitting, as that's the ship he flies here.

Lando: Split up and head back to the surface. And see if you can get a few of those TIE Fighters to follow you.
Jake: Copy, Gold leader.

2po78r9.jpg

KEYAN FARLANDER: Retconned into ROTJ wearing his B-Wing flight suit.

21lvbzd.jpg

TEN NUMB: Mr. Numb here just kinda hangs out during the Endor briefing.

rr10ti.jpg

TYCHO CELCHU: This guy was retconned into this scene. Good enough for me.

Is it just me, or does Katarn look a lot like Riker from TNG?

Is it just me, or does Katarn look a lot like Riker from TNG?

Bit, but it's not the same actor, like at all.

Eplosive Ewok,

Can you please edit your first post to consolidate these latest entries??

This thread will go on for pages and will make finding your additions easier by putting it all up front.

Thanks!!

I would but sadly the forums here only allow you to post 10 photos per post.

Unless someone knows a trick around it?

Also: oops - I missed one. I thought I posted everyone...

LIEUTENANT BLOUNT: This guy actually ended up using the OTHER gunner platform along with Cracken. Both Z pilots in the Falcon during the Battle of Endor. Funny, innit?

KYLE KATARN: They need to make another Jedi Knight game. Jedi Academy was forever ago.

So much this, and a modern entry in the X-wing/TIE Fighter series wouldn't hurt either, if you're listening EA... of course where the hell would I find a flight stick these days...

And technically, weren't most of the non-called by name on screen characters retconned? I doubt 'random extra in X-wing pilot flight suit' was credited as Tarn Mison, just as an obvious example. Or any of the named TIE pilots. Or 'random A-wing pilot who draws off interceptors' or 'other random A-wing pilot who rams the Executor's bridge'.

It's true. However some, like Tarn Mison actually were named on set and were later used in the EU.

Funny thing about that scene, everyone in it was played by someone who helped make the movie happen. Ralph McQuarrie makes an appearance on the right side, and I know there's others. The guy who played Tarn had a hand in production, too.
