Dunwich vs. Kingsport: Forum Knife Fight!

By bioball, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Alright, I think there have been enough comments in the forums to finally have it out.--which expansion is better Kingsport or Dunwich? I own all the Arkham expansion and highly suggest them all if you have the money to do so. I think once collect you have a lot of really great material to work with. But since money is no object go with Dunwich:

Dunwich Village: Its dangerous. Much like Arkham’s Black Cave you do run a great risk of something actually bad happing to you; Kingsport in my experience not so much. That makes it boring. I hate having all my hard work destroyed by a bad encounter but hey those are the breaks in AH and should remain so. I also think that other than Neil’s Curiosity Shop, Dunwich has much better special locations.

Dunwich Gates: This is big for me as I am extremely motivated by the gates. They get me moving and their threat is one of the best in the game. Also since Dunwich is more confined when monsters start pouring in it is a lot hard to clear them. Kingsport rarely sees many monsters; again this creates a sort of safehaven and my players like it for the rest, but better to keep the tension cranked up.

Vortices: This is a better mechanic than the rifts because it works well with the gates that exist in Dunwich. The vortices increase the threat of the gates, increase the terror track (allowing tighter connections with KiY and future expansion) and by releasing the Dunwich Horror, increase the doom track. Kingsport’s rift system seems to take too long to gear up. You can also flip tokens as soon as they appear so that you have less work to do on the fourth token to close the rift.

Theme: I think Dunwich captures the theme of its source material better than Kingsport, despite the latter’s in-game name droping.

Now, I do love the investigators in Kingsport (the Dreamer is great as is the Reporter) and the additional Epic battle cards, items ect.. But for over all game play, I will stick with Dunwich. A Kingsport herald could change my mind, maybe something that use the House on High more?

So, what you can't cut and paste from a word document into post box?

Edit: so I will have to type everything back out.

Dunwich will murder Kingsport with a fluffy spoon!

Oh god, I don't think you know what you're getting yourself into...

I am going to be stoned for this, but.... Kingsport. Kingsport is a much more interesting town and the rift mechanic is simply ingenious as it can never be diluted. Also, Epic Battle>Injury/Madness. Without Epic Battle the final battle is waaaay too easy.

So yeah, sorry guys, but I'll have to go with Kingsport.

(sorry, double posted, post removed)
