Is X-wing series any good?

By tiefanatic, in X-Wing

I have been thinking about starting the x-wing series because it looked interesting, and i want another star wars series to read because i am currently finishing the Republic/Imperial Commando novels, which are amazing, but i would prefer a series set after the republic.

Its the best series in starwars, heck it ranks right up next to the hobbit in my bookshelf

Yes, I really enjoyed the X-Wing series. Go for it! After that, read the Thrawn trilogy.

It's good aimed at a younger audience but not so much adults can't enjoy it too, I really enjoyed the books when I read them years ago.

They seemed a bit dry when I first read them, but that was when I was about 15. However, I have been planning to give them another chance. They depict some of the coolest events in the post-RotJ novel-verse, and with my recent addiction to adoption of the X-Wing game, I really want to go back to them now.

TL;DR: do it.

And if you haven't already, read the Thrawn Trilogy, Hand of Thrawn Duology, New Jedi Order, and Legacy of the Force. All of them are amazing.

Yeah, i actually was already thinking of reading that next, thanks!

Well, i'm not an adult anyway, but thanks.

The X-wing novels are very good books, just a word of warning, they have a couple of closely related novels that don't share the X-wing moniker, specifically, the courtship of princess Leia, and I Jedi. I jedi is written by one of the authors of the X-wing series, but Courtship of Princess Leia was a different author (I didn't like it as much as the others but it finishes the story left unfinished by X-wing novel 8).

I also second the suggestion of reading the Thrawn trilogy (and duology, and all of Zahn's other star wars novels)

It is just my opinion, but I would suggest avoiding any novel that takes place more than 25 years after the battle of Yavin, as most of them either suffer from absurd plot monkeys or extremely poor characterization.

It starts out with Coran and Whistler, in a full on battle trainer where the combat plays out just like an X-WING game. They describe the way the ships move, how they fire, redirecting the power to shields and/or lasers, the way they prep and then fire missiles, the pilots interaction with their droids, everything. I mean everything... lol!

The names on the cards that we all know and love (or Hate... Ha!) are there. Yes it is a great series, IT IS STAR WARS.

:)

They are extremely good. If you haven't read them, then you now have a homework assignment

You can't go wrong with the X-Wing series. Not only do they have perhaps the best cover art of any star wars novels, they also have the best story next to the Thrawn series. There is also the Rogue Squadron comic book series (by the same writer) that takes place just before the X-Wing book series starts and has most of the same characters in it, also highly recommend it as well.

If you played the old X-Wing and TIE Fighter computer games you'll both love and hate that they used it maybe too much at times to base the space combat on. It's a bit annoying when the limitations of computer games at the time makes the combat in the story seem unrealistic sometimes. I loved it at first, because of how much I had played those games it helped me to have a better understanding. But there were things Stackpole did with the combat sometimes that were just "gaming" the game mechanics. The worst was the far too many times they dumbfired torpedos or missiles and because of that enemy ships and fighters couldn't detect /track or destroy them. Was just stupid. But please don't let that turn you away from the X-Wing books, that was my only issue with them.

You did that in X-Wing and TIE Fighter so that the target wouldn't shoot down the torpedo, missile, or rocket by not having it targeted when you fired. Later on the X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance games fixed this "cheat".

Some of the best humor in any star wars books is in Allston's (rest in peace Sir) Wraith squadron books, he told as good stories as Stackpole but with outstanding humor, you'll find yourself laughing out loud at times as you read.

I'll give a dissenting opinion -- I found them unreadable. The writing quality is poor, and the characters way too simplistic. I could see how young people might enjoy them, but the writing is very very bad. People don't behave this way!

The Thrawn trilogy is marginally better, but again has very poor writing. e.g. the main antagonist, Thrawn, is mostly described with two exceedingly vague adjectives: cooly, or coldly. His gaze is cold, his voice is cold, his replies are cool. At the end of the first book, I have no clear picture of this character except that he's cold, and makes reckless decisions based on the flimsiest of evidence and racial stereotypes -- the latter of which he divines from a species' artwork. Apparently this makes him some kind of tactical genius, and is supposed to lend him an air of sophistication. The author reinforces this impression of intelligence by describing a 'novel' argument between Thrawn and a crewman about the difference between two synonyms. At that point, I should have made a run for the escape pods and abandoned ship.

To each their own of course, but for myself, I think I'll stick to the miniatures game! :)

Read my trilogy, it's awesome

Period3 is overly harsh but not wrong.

What this means is that the X-Wing series is not high, or even medium tier literature. They are light, shallow, fluff reading. They are fun to read, so long as you don't have a wildly obnoxious internal editor. Just don't expect much depth to what you're reading. They're about spaceship battles, a little bit about diversity, and not much else.

That simulator scenario doesn't just sound like X-wing, it's a mission from X-wing. You can actually play that scenario, and holy hell was it ever hard.

It's good aimed at a younger audience but not so much adults can't enjoy it too, I really enjoyed the books when I read them years ago.

*notsureifserious.jpg* Did we read the same books? He never wrote anything explicit but there was an awful lot of innuendo and near sex going on in the first few books particularly, nevermind the violence. I don't really think they qualify as YA so I'm not sure what you mean by younger audience.

New Jedi Order is one of the worst! Avoid!

Also avoid the Boba Fett trilogy and the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy. Both were awful.

I own almost all the Star Wars novels. Just the latest series (Legacy?) that I don't have yet and a smattering of others here and there. Probably spent more on them than on X-Wing Miniatures (!!!)

Only if you like rebel scum.....

As an X-Wing newbie but avid book lover, is their a site or something that gives a rough order in which to read these books? Or which series are considered canon and which are just flights of fantasy?

Thanks

i recently read them all just to gain a little more knowledge on the various pilots on the game.. i am on the last book now... also was just wondering does the issue with Wedges bro in law ever get resolved?? yeah the books are a bit fluffy but they are not bad...

Yeah, i sorta do have a wildly obnoxious internal editor, because my dad is the head editor of a magazine and i think he passed it on to me.
