Which is the better support

By SmartCookie, in X-Wing

Which is the best support in an imperial list running either kitted out named Phantom, named Interceptor, Defender, or named Firespray?

Omicron + 3 points of upgrades and 3 Academies

or

Bounty Hunter + 3 points of upgrades and 2 Academies?

Any idea what you might be up against?

Nope. The point is it should be as versatile as possible.

Bounty hunter + rec specialist is a very solid ship in an unknown meta and just an all around solid ship

Most likely the second option. An Omicron without Engine Upgrade generally isn't considered great support in any list. Not knocking the Lambda unduly, but a Bounty Hunter with a Recon Specialist is great for most things.

If going with a Phantom, you need something to take the heat off it. With an OGP, they just have to get past it and they'll never see it again, giving them time to hunt down the Phantom. Even with Engine Upgrade, the OGP probably won't help much. Bounty Hunter all the way.

If going with a Defender, assuming it's Vessery, the OGP might help out greatly with a Weapons Engineer. The Defender can also easily pursue any enemies that go past the OGP thanks to the white K-Turn.

If going with an Interceptor, both are great. I do find that running Vader in an OGP can draw enough attention to let interceptors get a good initial firing position.

With a Firespray, you will probably want the BH. With one large base ship on the board already, you want any second large ship to handle as best as it can. Taking an OGP will make it harder to influence the battle after the first pass, while the BH has the arcs and dial to handle itself in a traffic jam.

Firespray with Rec Spec is very good at supporting other ships and adding some hitpoints/attack dice.

Pains me though it does to say but it has to be the BH (I freaking LOVE the Lambda but it just doesn't cut it after the first pass unless you have an obliging opponent and even with EU it still takes MINIMUM 2 turns to get back into the fight usefully). My advice? Play the Lambda in casual games (and if you hit on a genuine tactic that works against decent players please do let us know) and use the BH where it matters in tourneys...

Oh and if you do use the lambda Adv Sensors are a great upgrade mitigating the very red dial the lambda has...

If your thinking defender take the hlc with outmanouver, go for the flank and make them worry as you deny them two green dice at range three.
