X-Wing Series So Satisfying

By Ribann, in X-Wing

Despite reading countless Star Wars EU books, I had never read the X-wing series by Michael Stackpole. After getting addicted to X-wing, I must say starting this series is even more satisfying that any other SW EU book series I've read.

They are by far my favorites!

yep, I was mad when I heard Disney said all the EU was gone. The only thing I cared about was the Xwing books

Oh also give the X-Wing Omnibuses from Dark Horse a go if you like the books. Stackpole did some of the later writing for them (including the whole part with Baron Soontir Fel). Today I just finished rereading all three of those for like the 50th time.

I also enjoyed Stackpole's treatment of the Battletech series. And for other space fighter combat? Check out Forstchen's Wing Commander books based on the game (out of print though)

I've also just started reading the first one.

I'm enjoying it, but I wouldn't call it better than the Heir to the Empire trilogy. There's just something slightly off about how the characters behave towards one another. I guess it just reads a little cartoony.

But, I'm enjoying it alright. Maybe it'll get better.

An EU book I did enjoy was the first Coruscant Nights book. But the second one didn't grab me at all.

I hope they make a card for that Gand pilot. We need more aliens.

I like a lot of the things Stackpole writes, and I've had to reacquire this series a couple times. I think Iceheart makes a better villain than Thrawn, I really like the political shenanigans in the books, makes me want to shave Borsk every time I read them.

Stackpole never really gets going(though Bacta War is quite good), but once Allston starts writing...

Started reading these recently. Whilst the story in the first book is OK and there are some interesting characters, I do not like the style of his writing (so much internal monologue - most is either unnecessary or could have been expressed in other ways). Struggling to get through the second book as it just has not engaged me at all. Not sure why they called it the X-Wing series either as we hardly see an X-Wing in Wegde's Gamble :P

This is just my humble opinion ofc, I don't wish to start a flame war. I know a lot of people have enjoyed them and fair play to those who have.

I thought they were some of the weakest Star Wars books TBH! :-O

The X-wing books, along with the games, seemed to add to the myth of TIE fighters being rubbish, when you watch the films, particularly a new hope, and they weren't...Getting away from the travails of force users was a good thing though.

Timothy Zahn wrote the best books I think... but there were a few other gems which slipped under the radar, eg Children of the jedi. That are well worth picking up. Can't remember all the ones I read, its nearly twenty years ago!

I read most of the books up through the New Jedi Order stuff which I am still in the process of creeping through. The only book I remember really not liking was Planet of Twilight, but I was in junior high and high school when I read most of them.

The X-Wing series remains one of the best out of many series in the Star Wars EU. I rank it up with Zahn's Heir to the Empire trilogy and the Knights of the Old Republic.

I think the X-wing and the Thrawn Trilogy/Hand of Thrawn Duology/Survivor's Quest are probably my Favorite books of the series, followed up by the Republic Commando Books/The Legacy of the Force books with the Mandos( I think Karen Traviss wrote those)

I don't know why I like the Mandos and Chiss so much but I do

Yeah, the Stackpole books are awesome .. and the only EU that is worth reading as it stays true to the SW universe. The Alliston books feel like they're written for kids.

In other news, when I was a younger fellow I emailed Mr. Stackpole and told him his X-Wing series was best ever. His reply was brilliant. He told me that I needed to get out, and read more.

What a champion!

Adam, if i remember Fel is comics only until he reapears in the Zahn novels and the New Jedi Order series.

I've got so much reading to do as it is but I was contemplating going back through the X-Wing series as the game has renewed my interests in the books. I think this seals it though, they are on the list. They were by far my favorite SW book series.
