Can you modify twice the same dice?

By Krynn007, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Just read a post and it reminded me of a game I had a few weeks ago with a friend of mine.

Can't remember the exact details but it was something along the lines of me using the hlc. Change a crit to a hit and then with Etahn ability changed it back to a crit.

My buddy said I couldn't do that. He said you can only modify the dice once

I know target locks and re rolls you can only re roll once.

On page 12 of the rule book it doesn't say anything about not being able to modify again.

Unless I missed something.

I guess another example could also be used with the huge ships.

If you attack with the CR90 and user gunnery team you can change a blank to a hit.

Could you then user Etahn to change that hit to a crit?

I believe you can

But if not please point me in the proper direction.

You're right; you are only limited to one reroll, but you are free to modify dice multiple times. Both of your examples work as you describe.

Focus, Rerolls, Pilot Abilities all modify dice. Only the reroll is only allowed once.

Roll Attack Dice.

Defender modifies Attack Dice

Attacker modifies Attack Dice.

Can only re-roll a given die once. Note that cards may supersede this; Sensor Jammer specifically prevents re-rolling the die it changes.

You can only reroll a die once but you can make any number of modifications to it. Consider:

Advanced Proton Torpedo can turn a [blank] into an [eye] result.

Focus token can then turn [eye] result into a [hit] result.

Throw in Etahn's ability and you can turn a [hit] result into a [crit] result.

Or:

You roll a critical with a Heavy Laser Cannon.
1) The HLC turns the critical into a hit.
2) Your opponent's Sensor Jammer then turns it into a Focus.
3) You then spend your Focus token to turn it into a hit.
4) You then use Etahn to turn that hit into a critical.
These poor dice must get so confused sometimes.

That's cool

I thought so.

It all makes sense, but never hurts to ask.

Especially when someone you play against says you cannot do that.

At the time we were tired and it was late so we didn't look it up. I can't remember how we played it out.

Of coarsev when I looked it up later I didn't see anything stating so.

Just good to get the communities feedback so I can point it out if ever needed down the road.

Thank you

Rerolling is entirely different than changing a die result. If you need a solid reference in the rulebook to point to, the best one is on page 12 of the rulebook in the sidebar:

"Important: When a die is changed

or rerolled, ignore its original result
and apply only the new result. This
new result may be modified by other
effects; however, a die that has
already been rerolled cannot be
rerolled again during this attack."
I have bolded the relevant wording, which in effect says subsequent effects may change a die result any number of times. The next phrase restricts the rerolling of any die to once, but the result can be modified by other effects multiple times. The examples given in above posts illustrate this very well.
