Team Epic...

By That One Guy, in X-Wing

So, after having done a few of these at my FLGS, I am kinda feeling like it's almost ruining regular epic and normal matches for me. It's sooo much fun and you get to coordinate with a friend, plus the planning phase goes only marginally slower than a regular game, and much faster than a 1 on 1 Epic game. So yeah, really loving Team Epic.

Thoughts?

Since getting the huge ships I now feel like I am missing something when I don't play with them. Regular 100 point matches were never my favorite but now they seem much less interesting. Once imperial huge ships drop I predict this game will turn up to 11!

Do you guys obey the instructions from the rulebook that say all tactical discussion has to be performed in front of your opponents?

I could never figure out why they stuck that in there. Unless it's meant to keep the game moving quickly, and prevent private pow-wows away from the table. But that seems like an unusual thing to try to enforce through the core rules.

Here's a question

Are you allowed to draw pictures to your team mate?

I've played a few epic games usually 2v1 and the other team would use a pen and paper to draw out there plan so I wouldn't know what they are doing.

Never really thought about it until now, which is why I ask.

Technically they are still in front of me.

I'm pretty sure the only thing you can "hide" from your opponents while still showing each other is your movement dials. Anything else has to be spoken out loud I believe, so I think the secret drawings are cheating, they should have planned out what they want to do ahead of time.

2v1 isn't exactly an official match (I don't think).

So I would allow secret talk since I'm the single player has the advantage in planning.

But in official 2v2 team epic then the only thing secret is the dials.

Really?

Hmm

Maybe I should start a topic on this just to see what the rest would think.

I never considered it cheating.

It's just a friendly game at my houseand I won the last one, but it would still be good to know. Especially if we ever did do a team tournament.

I just started a discussion to see what others may say

Looks like the only difference is in Team Epic you can show dials, in normal team play you cannot.

Though these are the type of rules that are begging for home ruling... play the way you want!

Players on the same team may strategize against their
opponent(s). Players are free to discuss any information
with teammates (and opponents), but all discussion
must take place in public (i.e., their opponent(s) must
be able to hear all discussion). Also, teammates cannot
show each other the maneuver chosen on their dial(s).

Table Talk
Due to the vast number of ships each team must coordinate, table talk is
fully permitted during a Team Epic tournament. Teammates may discuss
strategy, coordinate ship movements, and even secretly show each other
their maneuver dials (these rules supersede the team rules described in the
X-Wing rulebook). However, players must endeavor to keep the game moving
at a reasonably brisk pace, and bickering will not be tolerated. Each player on
a team has final say over their own ships, actions, and maneuvers, regardless
of who is team captain.

Earshot hasn't mattered in my games. You're busy talking, they're busy talking. "Out loud" and "screaming" aren't the same thing.
