Etahn A'Baht -- why are some people calling him "Ethan"

By DagobahDave, in X-Wing

At least a couple of posters insist on calling this character "Ethan".

However:

Is there more to this story?

Prolly spell check or they are legit clueless.

Autocorrect and carelessness. I pick my battles in the omnipresent grammar wars. This one I pass on, random made up alien names and stuff.

Spell check/mobile posting makes it a pain.

I really like the one guy that had him auto corrected to "eating a boat"

That's been probably my favorite post since joining the forum.

Probably because "Etahn" is a pretty dumb looking name, even if it isn't too hard to pronounce, and "A'Baht" both looks and sounds stupid.

Basically, probably just because his name looks moronic.

I now call him that on principle

I'm guilty of misspelling his name quite often ... It's because I like to make jokes about him based on C 2 H 6 or C 2 H 5 OH respectivly, both of which are highly flammable ;) (they might not be as appearent to an english-speaker due spelling and pronounication of names of both chemicals in English)

Becuase they don't read. Annoys the hell out of me.
However, eating a boat cracks me up, and our group will most likely develop nicknames for him based on that

Etahn sounds pretty stupid - even in my language.

Ethan on the other hand ... it's simple and has a nice rattle.

The same reason from other games:

Nicia becomes Nikki

Lylyth becomes Lily

and so on

Is there more to this story?

Short answer: no.

Long answer: noooooooooooooooooooooooo .

The better question is how do you pronounce Etahn. I've heard it "ettin" "eatin'" "E-tan" and then there's A'baht which has been "abbot" "a boat" "a bot"...

he has many names

He's known as Ethan here.

As Lt. Blount is known as Emily.

And as Wes is known as Wesley..

It's just one of those things y'know. ;)

It's threads like this that happen when we have a slow news week.

I like to think of the line from Robin Hood Men in Tights. "HEY ABBOT!!" "I hate the guy."

My phone hates Etahn. It corrects me so I correct it, then it changes it back.

I pronounce it E-Tan A-Bat. Not sure that's right but no one has told me otherwise.

if you aren't calling him Eating a Boat you are doing it wrong

Eating a boat and bat. That better? :)

I call him Ethan because I am very dyslexic

:)
have a great day!

Why do I call him Ethan? Because it hurts you and I enjoy your pain like any true Sith.

I've seen an auto correct turn his name into "eatin' a boat", that cracked me up.

actually the problem isn't because people don't read but because the letters are exactly the same only 2 are in a different order

and as long as the frist and lsat lteter are in the smae palce, the hmuan barin will pcik up the wrod and raed / pornuonce it the smae way as if it were seplled corrcelty

and bceasue ETHAN is an acutal nmae, poelpe will raed it as scuh

Possibly named/anagrammed after someone IRL named Ethan.

Much like Turd Furgeson before him (Turr Phennier) we have dubbed him Eatin a' Butt...mature i know.

Easier to spell and pronounce
