I'm looking to have a 6x3 mat printed with an image of the Death Star trench that would work for a game like X-wing. I've seen some guys post about a trench run scenario, but I'd like to get a mat for the mission itself. It looks something similar to this, except not 3D:

Some guy brought a similar mat to a local event several weeks back. We had to flip it over after a while, because it was killing our eyes.
Edited by WonderWAAAGHThe grays really should be a lot darker so that there is less of a contrast and therefore easier on the eyes. Watch the movie battle again, and you'll see what I mean. And the blurring of the Death Star surface as we follow the ships helped, too, because our eyes naturally focus on what moves the least in those shots.
One of the Gale Force Nine mats has a Space Station pattern on it. I played on one once a year ago, and it was amazing how things like asteroids and tokens could get lost in the pattern. Very busy, and I haven't seen one since.
The one tournament I've been to so far I had to play on the "Death Star" mat every game but the final. So easy to lose tokens on that mat.
Edit: Pretty sure it was the Gale Fore 9 one Gullwind mentioned because they're sold in the store it was at.
There are some images over in the Files section at BGG that are more like the pic you posted. Also I think Warscapes has a .pdf with different images that you can piece together to make a larger surface. As mentioned, they are fun for doing a trench run scenario, but for general gaming they are a bit busy.

Nope, maintenance spotted that and slapped a bit of 2x4 over it. It's good and covered up now!

I love playing on that mat because it provides nothing but distraction to my opponent.
Its a great idea that they had, but really, really bad in practice. The problem being that its white on white with black borders and some shading. It worked in the movies, because it was 3d, and because the camera hardly ever look from "above" an xwing to see it flying across the Death Star surface. Most of the shots are from the side.
I only think there is one shot where Luke blows up a bunch of turbolaser batteries and gets a little singed.
Even ol'Flanel Beards new it didnt look good from a visual perspective.
thats funny i actually had the gale force 9 mat and sold it due to it hurting my eyes... i was really excited to get alot of use out of it too..

I've made thus model. The pattern was bought as a high resolution PDF with tiles that I arranged myself and darkened a bit for the trench itself. The 2 surface areas can be pushed together to make a large single play area by removing the trench floor.
If you want I might be able to find a link to the PDF I think it was $5 or something like that.
Do the two surface areas push together real slowly, like a garbage compactor? That way you can also reenact your favorite detention level waste compactor scenes from a new hope with your action figures? Can I get a garbage moster anybody?!
