Differences in Age of Rebellion & Edge of the Empire

By zhentil, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

I am really thinking about pouring some money into this new Star Wars RPG. But i see that there are two different main titles basically. Now there isn't a difference on the way the game is played just the era's right? I have 3 sets of dice on order and just would like to know if there is any main differences i need to know about.

The only differences are the careers and specializations. Otherwise the rules are identical. I believe the equipment is identical as well, though there are some different ships.

It's not really a different "era", but rather a different setting. But the games are completely cross-compatible, you can easily be, say, a Soldier who later on picks up a Bounty Hunter spec from EotE.

If you had only waited for the dice, I'd have suggested getting a beginner box instead. You get a set of dice in the beginner box, and it's a great way to learn the system, plus the free PDF followup adventure is well worth it.

I find that, for the familiar RPG feel of a bunch of oddball heroes wandering around together getting into trouble, Edge does it better than Age. OTOH, there are some great opportunities for a more military-focused game in Age if that's what you want, but i find my players don't want to do too much of that.

Thank you guys, I was looking at the beginners box as well. Thank you again.

I'd definitely recommend both (or either) Beginner Box as a great way to get a feel for the game.

It's also an easy way to teach the game to a group of players so THEY can get a feel for it, and whether they enjoy it, want to continue, or not.

Age of Rebellion is one of these games that can work a little better with beginning players in terms of "how do we get into this?" AoR missions can simply start with a mission briefing, where the players are part of an unit created for a specific assigned task. It's an awful lot easier than a bunch of misanthropes randomly bumping into each other in a cantina. :)

The AoR beginner game is very good in getting them started, as not only have they had the mission briefing, but the mission has started, and they've arrived at their objective and have even carried out the first task.
