2014 Nationals Results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

Riznal (8) ...........................................................involved in the no falcon no phantom pledge

No Phantom or Falcon...but 7 Tie Howl Swarm?...is that any better?

I'm sure we will see the swarm make a come back eventually.

Swarm never left. People just got lazy.

1 thing I feel should be pointed out about the Malaysian Nationals is that the players that did pretty well previously have opted NOT to fly any builds involving falcons or phantoms as a protest against the current metagame, which would definitely skew the results seen here, as only 1 of them (Riznal) managed to make it into the top 8

Wow, that is SUPER meaningful! We have never had that kind of "experiment" before. So lets look at the Top 8 again:

  • Winner: Fat Han + Jan Ors
  • 2nd place: 2x ACD Phantom + Backstabber
  • Top 4: 7 TIE Swarm
  • Top 4: 4-ship rebel, with Biggs and PS12 Ion Cannon Turret
  • Top 8: ACD Phantom + mini-swarm
  • Top 8: Fat Han + 3 Z's
  • Top 8: ACD Phantom + Ace squint + Lambda (Yorr)
  • Top 8: ACD Phantom + Ace Squint + TIEs

Only 2 out of the top 8 were NOT Fat Falcon or Phantoms. What players specifically avoided playing Fat Falcons and Phantoms? The results heavily imply that they did not make the cut because they flew different kinds of squads.

Taking a really quick look at the lists (might be some mistakes in here):

21% of the players brought Falcons

25% Falcons made up the top 8

33% of the players brought Phantoms

50% Phantoms made up the top 8

8% of the players brought a full swarm

12.5% Swarms made up the top 8

Very small data point but looks like the swarm was the most effective build type that day.

One of each 2 phantom lists makes into Top 8. Six out of Eight, Made to the Top 10.

1 swarm, out of 2 makes into Top 8 (where do you see the third swarm?). I see the same efficiency about Top 8. But one was fourth and the another 16th.

The good thing is that Major Juggler is getting all the lists, and not the Top 16. If we knew all the pairings, it would bring more interesting data.

About the swarm, well, swarm vs Phantom match up requires careful planning and thinking, and it can go south pretty fast. Also, you are counting Falcons on the same category. There are only 3 Fat Han builds, 2 of them at the Top8, one at 17th. I would say, Fat Han builds had the best advadcement rate, as a lot of people expect. Yeah, statistics are that funny.

Pairings + detailed logs + upgrade tracking would be a dream. I don't think that's very likely though.

Or sick of flying the same uninspiring bag of bricks for over a year.

It's a little more complicated than that, if you want to weight the results by final standings. I.e.first place would be weighted as 24/1 = 24, 2nd place 24/2 = 12, Top 4 24/4 = 6, Top 8 24/8 = 3. This is the weighting that I was using before for Regionals, to more accurately reflect the final placement after elimination rounds.

Also, there were only three instances of C-3P0, and they finished Top 8, #9, and #17. The winning Han Solo squad was purely a wave 3 build.

Pairings + detailed logs + upgrade tracking would be a dream. I don't think that's very likely though.

Working on it... the hardest part is getting the squad details at registration. From there the Cryodex software can updated to output all the data for later stats processing.

What is your definition of "Fat Han"? Just asking as a lot of people have a different view of what it means. For me it's Han + Engine + 3PO + Gunner/Luke + Filler with 3 Z95s (ie. a post wave 3/3.5 build).

Nicholas Wong's list went

Rnd 1 - Win 100 vs 40

Christopher Choy (100 squad points, #1 Swiss, 21 pts, 779 MoV): Whisper + Veteran Instinct + Gunner + Fire Control System + ACD; Echo + Outmanuevre + Intelligence Agent + Fire Control System + ACD; Backstabber

Very small data point but looks like the swarm was the most effective build type that day.

Actually 2 ship builds were the most successful builds that day. 35 points and 1225 MoV between them vs 29 pts and 1060 MoV for the swarms.

Han + Engine + 3PO + Gunner/Luke + Title + Filler

Basically, a 60+ Han with Engine upgrade. That's list, not how Han is built.

These are the results from the New Zealand - Auckland Regional event.

Due to the remote nature of our country our shipping speed has ment that our kits arrive very late which means we run late. Our National Kit only arrived last week as an example.

We have 2 more regional events to run and I will post the results as best I can for them.

Great, thanks! Do you have dates and locations set up for the next Regionals and Nationals? Total attendance would be very nice to have (edit, it looks like 18), and as many of the squad lists as possible, but if you don't have most of them then no worries. Next time, hopefully. :)

I don't need names to track results or statistics, and am fine with removing names from my results pages. I only started adding them recently because people were including them and it was helpful in pointing out who lost to who during the elimination brackets.

A further question: I see that Rebel Aces is available to play, but what about C-3P0? (Tantive expansion)

If it has been released here then it is fine to play at our events. I only took in the lists for the top 4 - I will fix that for future events that I run.

I think the only things we don't have are the decimator + yt-2400 and the new faction. Neither of which will be released here before our nationals due to shipping (We got our Rebel aces on the week before the Auckland Regional).

The Wellington Regional event will be on the 18th of October 2014:

Ouch, $40 for an entry fee for a regional...unless there are extra prizes being given out like candy at Halloween, that is highway robbery. Heck I think events costing $15 are steep, but I guess if people are willing to pay that much then that is their problem. Will the Christ Church Regional even have enough people to be statistically significant?!?

That's New Zealand dollars, which amount to 31.5 US dollars as Google tells me. Still, it's double what I payed to play at a Nationals event in Europe.

A few things you should know.

The tournament kits are not free - they cost us in NZ about $180 USD after import duty and shipping.

The Auckland regional event cost $20 to enter (NZD)

We gave away a Tantive IV as a spot prize rrp $150nz here, a rebel freighter rrp $80nz, a lambda shuttle rrp $45 a set of GF9 asteroids rrp $40 and 4 small ships each comming in at an rrp of $25nzd locally.

These prizes were split between 18 players - while I can not speak for the prizes at christchurch I can tell you that the prize support at Wellington will be similar.

Please understand that venue hire is not always free either as these events are not hosted in a store in NZ.

Spanish Nationals results are in for Top 32. I'll translate and post here eventually.

Top 8 elimination can be found here

Wow, first the shuttle wins the North American Championships, and then now a HWK wins the Spanish Nationals (and beats out Falcons and Phantoms), what has the world come to? ;)

"strange" things do happen when some people aren't net-listing. ;)

Man that's an absurd number of Han Solos - 1/3 of the top 32 alone.

I was surprised at the lack of showing for Roark in the US nationals (I believe only 1 or 2 lists had him), since he's a good counter to the phantom, yet doesn't take a lot of points, so you can be more flexible with the rest of your squad. Here there are 6 in the top 32.

I'm guessing the winner's interesting combo is swarm tactics on Cracken, so he can bounce ps12 back onto Roark for a hard-hitting anti-phantom turret.

I've gone to the two pages and translated via Google, but I don't see what the lists are. Just the names. Am I missing something? I'd like to see the top lists used.

Yup, I'm glad to see that. :)

But the next few in the top 8 are pretty much identical lists to Paul and Rick's lists...

Click the cartoon icon on the far right for each squad, and it brings up a squad builder. For example the winner was:

So, the answer to my question about lots of give-aways, is yes. The possibility of door-prizes, the extra shipping costs for prizes and ships, and the fact that the site is rented makes the cost understandable. I am just spoiled with the $5-15 entry fees I see locally in the southeastern US, I did pay $20 to play in one local Store Championship, but half of that was an entry fee for the Con it was held at.

I am glad to know that there are X-Wing players willing and able to play in any of the tournaments world-wide!
