2014 Nationals Results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

James Elhardt (note the correction) and I (Matt B) both had:

Han Solo YT-1300

- Vet Instincts

- C3PO

- Mercenary CoPilot

4x Bandit Z-95

We have been working on the list together, it's not a coincidence we both had the same thing.

Whoops! Corrected my typo in original post.

MajorJuggler, I will have the results from the NA Championship to you on Tuesday. I am going to finalize the top 62 then submit it to FFG. Once I am done. I will have the list with MOV and score in order up to the top 8. I get back to Omaha on Monday then will work on it Tuesday Morning. Was one heck of a 3 days.

Does anyone have the sheets for full squad lists and rankings from Thursday and Friday?

@MajorJuggler ... is there a spreadsheet built for nationals (similar to store and regionals)? I can't seem to find a link for it.

No, not yet. I am going to grab all the squads in text format and then write a script to compile the statistics. Filling in all the point values by hand for every single ship and upgrade is taking too long.

Very cool list and a very different flying strategy combined with good flying and synergy. The only thing is, I wonder if he faced a fat Han with Gunner/Luke AND C-3PO+MF? The game with Hexis sounded like a great close game and could have gone either way, but Hexis didn't have Gunner/Luke nor MF Title. The finals were 2 Falcons without Gunner/Luke, and from the sounds of it, Whisper only survived because the falcon player let Whisper recloak when he forgot to.

If the Whisper list played Paul Heaver's Fat Han list, it would have had even more of an uphill battle. That's a matchup that I would have loved to see (as a Phantom player, to learn how to deal with Han + Luke/Gunner).

Ultimately, if the falcon shoots first and has Luke/Gunner, especially if he has engine too, there's almost no way for the phantom to survive more than 3-4 rounds of shooting from the Falcon because gunner will take off 1 HP every time it shoots, even with evade/focus+4-5 dice (most likely with EU, the falcon will boost into R2 or R1 of you). So the phantom is on a clock, needing his allies to kill Han before Han kills the phantom.

Either way, I really want to watch the finals to learn because it must have been some amazing flying!

Even if he didn't, IMO, it doesn't really matter because the list you identify wasn't good enough to make it to face him in the finals.

Either way, this is the nature of building lists for tournaments - building a list that you think gives you the best chance to win based on what you're good at flying at what you're likely to face. There shouldn't be a diminishment of a player or list just because it didn't face its hard counter.

The Champion, Rick, has beaten a Fat Han list with this same squad in the semis of the Kingston Regional. He won and went on to win the Regional. He has some experience against it and I imagine he would've had a plan for it here.

No no no, sorry, I didn't mean to diminish his accomplishments. That was not the intent of the post. I was just thinking out loud and wanting to watch him play "Fat Han" lists so I can learn how to fly phantoms better against Falcons (as a phantom lover myself). No disrespect intended at all against Rick.

Again, I really love his list as it combines 3 ships that most people would not think of using and requires extreme skill to fly synergistically. I look forward to watching the video and hope to get even half as good as him sometime in the future. :)

I completely understand and sympathize. I assume when it is done you will make it available. Thank you for all of your efforts on all of the spreadsheets. If it hasn't been said before, it is appreciated !

I placed 12th in the US flight 2 preliminaries and 17th in the main tournament. My list was: Chewbacca w/ Luke, C3P0, Predator, Falcon title. Tala squad w/ munitions failsafe and assault missiles. Tala squad. Bandit Squad. 100pts.

So who won?

I think its positioned as an incredible anti-Phantom build.

His gunner Whisper is liable to smoke an opposing Phantom pretty hard. The stress he gains from an enemy RC is absorbed by Yorr who doesn't die. Soontir and 2pts of intiative means two late movers/attack firsters that could easily pin down a Phantom.

Its the Fat Han I'd be afraid of too. Really want to see how he played vs two Falcons.

I've been advocating Gunner on the Phantom a lot, helps with all high-agility ships and you can even do more tricks such as purposefully shooting through asteroids, where you have an advantage over your opponent (think vs Han 4 vs 3 with Gunner on your shot at range 3, 3 vs 4 on his shot because you're still decloaked)

Actually makes a lot of sense, it sort of overrides C3P0 as well as you can force the Evades and Guess and then gunner.

As the Falcon player, having c-3PO and evade means a lot of control of just taking 1-2 hits so gunner doesn't trigger. But yeah, having gunner is definitely a good insurance, but I don't think it's as useful against a Fat Falcon because of their ability to let 1 hit happen and that 1 hit isn't much when they have 13 HP.

My son Aaron Dorcy took 19th with:

Corran Horn with R2D2, Marksmanship and FCS

Luke Skywalker with R5P9

Biggs with only his Mustache

I am so proud of him thinking outside the box and ending up one win away from top 8 with this list. Congrats to all. It was an honor to be allowed to run this tournament. I will see all at worlds.

When talking to Rick, he said his plan if he faced me was to concede and go get a beer. :)

In all seriousness, I made my Fat Han list to beat Whisper. Vet Inst means I always shoot first and move last, the Engine Upgrade lets me bounce over to close the gap, and Luke makes sure I get some good hits in. Biggs makes it so that he can't kill Han before Whisper dies. Is it possible to kill Biggs and Han before he loses Whisper and Soontir? Of course! But it's very unlikely. Number of phantoms I faced in 14 rounds of play: 0.

But that Chewie in the final 4 was a hard counter to any Fat Han lists without a lot of red dice support. Once he kills all of Han's support ships, Chewie is effectively untouchable. I really liked that list, and hoped it would get eliminated in the top 8. :)

LOL! That's pretty funny what Rick said. Just looking at that Fat Han list scares the hell out of me. when you first posted the list, I was just wracking my brain trying to figure out how it's possible to kill Han before he kills the phantom, and it pretty much comes down to the dice and maximizing my chances at R3. Even then, your EU prevents an phantom from staying in R3. Very well designed list! Too bad you didn't get to kill any phantoms in this tournament. :P

Best of luck with Worlds (assuming you're going). Can't wait to see what you bring there. :)

Here's a pic of the final standings. Nice representation from Illinois. My playgroup took two spots :-) congrats Dom (who brought 3 Lambdas and Bounty Hunter) and Piqsid (Corran and Han).

Nice! Great to see the Han/Corran list work, and something cool like the 3 shuttles + BH.

Sozin, wow, you're playgroup must be super good to have 2 players in the top 9!

IL had 5 of the top 10 spots. Nick, Dave, Dom, Myself (Tyler), and Pasquale!

Congrats to IL! Is it in the water? If so, I need to drink some myself! ;)

I've never had a more fun and stressful experience in my life:) I really enjoyed meeting and talking to many of you In person.

Where does nick play out of in Illinois?

Thanks for the game in Round 1... It was really the only time throughout the weekend I felt completely outplayed. You deserved the top 8.

So Dom missed the cut huh... Sad. Would have loved to see that list against any I those top 4.

Do we have any top 8 lists? I'd also love to know more in general about how to fly three shuttles and a BH--perhaps the star of the show regardless of a the final cut.
