Looking for iOS app for squad building

By AdmiralBowTIE, in X-Wing

Hey there,

it seems there are some solutions for android but none for iOS yet. I would really love to have the possibility to plan my squads offline with my iPhone. I would even pay for the app!

Anybody willing to make one?

Kind regards,

Admiral BowTIE

BattleScribe Pro is your answer

would be nice...

(Yet Another) X-wing Squad Builder is my list-building solution of choice--it's a web app rather than an iOS app, though.

I'll 2nd what the sharp pointy object said. Plus after creating a squad there's no need to save, just screenshot it and it's in your camera roll. Although it doesn't work so well for Epic lists.

So there is favorable opinions for a web based non iOS native or smartphone friendly solution which wasn't what the OP asked for? In contrast to an actual App with proper saving and editing features that works brilliant offline on iPhone?

Fair enough ;-)

Don't get me wrong, I much prefer using (Ya)X-WSB when Omar my computer and need to print the list, but I decided to provide the answer that was requested ;-)

I don't have an answer for the OP's question, since I'm not an iOS developer (and don't particularly like the way Battlescribe works on my iPhone). I considered not posting at all, but I decided on balance that offering the link was more helpful than staying quiet--while acknowledging that it didn't meet the OP's constraints.

I really appreciate the link Vorpal Sword; it seems to be a good alternative that works well on whatever (phone, ipad, computer) I choose to access it with.

Battlescibe works ok. I wish it would at least list the pilot skill when you're choosing ships. I've grown accustom to having the description of the ships/cards/upgrades available when building online. It would be nice to have that without having to view roster every time.

I too wish there was a native iOS app.

I have a page in Notes dedicated for YASB permalinks as well.

How dare you, Vorpal. How dare you.

I'm the one who maintains the X-Wing BattleScribe files (not the program itself though, just the X-Wing catalogues). If displaying PS on the selection menu is important to people, you should let me know! Start a topic or send me a PM or something and we can think through it. I can't promise I can accommodate everyone, but I'm always open to feedback.

Battlescribe is ok but it has about 3-4 more menus and clicks than is needed making it cumbersome to use. Not having pilot skill and pilot special abilities is also a downside.

Dr. Lucky - I had no idea those things were file dependant. I assumed they were a part of the program. I have no idea how that stuff all works.

If it were up to me, I'd have the PS displayed on the page next to the pilot. Or the points cost. Where ever looks the best.

It would be cool if (and this may not even be possible, or maybe too time consuming...) under the upgrades/modifications pages you could touch each one to get a drop down discription. I'm still new enough that I don't know every card or what works with what.

For me anyway, that would make the app great. It can be slightly cumbersome to navigate sometimes, but it just might still be too new.

I should add, that I know all that information can be accessed via the view roster button, but it would come in much handier when you're building the list.

Even if there was a running roster at the bottom of the main "ship" page, it would be better than having to click through to view the roster.

Again, not sure if these are things that are even possible.

It does if you review the list. It just means that if you don't know what you're after it takes a little more time. However it works offline, works for multiple game systems, and the Pro version can be easily linked to your dropbox so that any list you create on your phone is replicated to your PC ready to be printed off.

The actual developer of Battlescribe is regularly making adjustments to improve it also, so it has good support. My only gripe with it is that no one has created a decent set of datafiles for Flames of War, but that is a community issue, not a fault of the application.

BattleScribe is a generic list building program. Different people maintain the files for different games. Ultimately it means that it may not be as sleek and perfected to a particular game system as some of the dedicated squad builders, but it means you can use the same format and apps for your lists for all the games you play. The other strength is that you can easily move files back and forth between the mobile and desktop versions of the program.

Truthfully, the desktop version of BattleScribe basically does all the stuff you are asking for - if you mouse over a pilot or upgrade, a little tooltip window pops up and tells you everything you need to know about that card. However, the only way to see most of that info on mobile is in the Roster view...

I can't change how and what the app displays in the basic menu structure - that's part of the underlying program and not something I can adjust (and I'm not really a programmer so I wouldn't know how to make those changes even if I had the rights).

I can change parts of the unit names to include Pilot Skill, so that it would show up on the ship selection menu. Depending on how exactly I do that, I can probably make it sort the pilots by PS instead of alphabetically. I'll play around with it so see if I can make it look good and helpful without getting too busy.

Honestly, I don't get much feedback about these files, so any input is always welcome. I took this over because Arctic Snake walked away from this after the Wave 3 release and I wanted to keep using BattleScribe for X-Wing. For a few months, I didn't even share them publicly - it was just me and a few other guys I play with in person using them. Even now, I hear more about these files in person and than I do online. People are obviously downloading them, but people don't seem to have much to say. I guess I could be more proactive about soliciting feedback.

Thanks!

I figured that making changes like would come down to programing.

The Pilot Skill inclusion would still be very much welcome.

I've enjoyed using it when I'm away from my computer and thought of a build or combo I wanted to save for later.

Thanks for the work you've done, and hopefully will continue to do when we get the new aces and wave five!

Double post.

Hm. Battlescribe looks interesting but does not seem to work for me. I can't select any ships, the dropdowns are empty after adding the data file.

How dare you, Vorpal. How dare you.

Once again it is absolutely heartwarming to see you run to your mate's aid when he is in such distress. What is it they say? Ahh; A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Still it doesn't changes the fact that the OP asked for an iOS offline tool and instead was offered online web versions

Have you updated the repository file in the "Manage Data" tab?

You know, not everyone likes breakfast to be a large meal, sometimes a nice bowl of cereal or an apple just hits that spot. Still other folks want eggs, bacon, gravy and all the trimmings. I'm usually just looking for some kind of starch and a coffee, strong coffee is one of my favorite things.
