WWII era Planes for Battle of Britain scenario

By Dursum, in X-Wing

Long time lurker, first time poster. Decided to create cards for a Battle of Briatain scenario at the FLGS, using the Wings of War minis. Cards created using Strange Eons/GIMP. Don't have my mouse with me so I'm having to use a trackpad, I'm almost done with the Bf 109, will post when it's finished. Dials, upgrade cards (for the Bf 109 cannons) and named pilots will come tomorrow.

Comments and critic appreciated- and if anyone else has done this before, link?

Ew, trackpad.
The card looks pretty neat but I feel the x-wing style stats are a bit out of place.

Yeah, I was debating on whether or not to change them... There's only so much you want to do when you just have the mousepad lol.

Yeah. if it was possible to get more retro graphics it would fit but hey. id play that.

Why bother?

Wings of War/Glory has rules for adding skills to pilots. The only time initiative is an issue is when your pilot gets wounded, you dont need dials, you plan your speed and movement secretly with your card. The rest is simultanious. The dicless system is one of the best things about Wings of Glory WW2. I just dont see the point?

Card looks cool, I tried to match up X Wing ships with Battle of Britain types:

Battle of Britain

Spitfire Mk I = Z-95 (good all rounder)
Hurricane Mk I = Y Wing (tough workhorse)

Me110 = TIE Advanced (could be used as a light bomber)
Me109 = TIE Fighter (has advantage over Hurricane and Spitfire due to better dive and climb rates)
Ju88 = Slave 1 (tough, maneuverable for it's size as was used as a dive bomber too)
He111 = Shuttle (slow but tough)

Ju87 = TIE Bomber

All fighters have similar firepower (2 Attack)

Later European Theatre (1943 +)

FW190A = TIE Interceptor
FW190 Sturmbock variant = TIE Defender (uparmored version of FW190)

Me262 = TIE Phantom (hard to hit but fragile)

B-17 = YT-1300

Spitfire Mk V-IX = X Wing (good all rounder)

P-51B Mustang = A Wing (fast but lacks firepower)
P-51D Mustang = E Wing (great at everything)
P-47 Thunderbolt = B Wing (strong, heavy hitter, good handling)

I think I would need to see how you stat up the Spitfire Mk I and Me109E. To me a single engined fighter should have 3 Hull on average. Weaker types like the Zero would have only 2 Hull. The Hurricane was noted for being rugged so I would have given it a higher Hull. Also the armament of .303s is pretty feeble at range compared to a plane mounted 20mm. Maybe they only shoot to Range 1-2?

303 weak but reasonable rate if fire....

50 cal decent power high rate of fire.

20 mm cannon slow rate of fire high power.. however why reinvent the wheel? as was mentioned why not get wings of glory or any of the many WWII era air combat games?

Hey Dursum! Looks good.

This would be a killer idea if you were going to combine systems (i.e., have WWII fighters flying against TIEs and such).

Otherwise I don't see much of a point since Wings of Glory is an excellent ruleset as is (though I much prefer WWI to WWII). Still, I will be interested to see what you come up with!

Mostly because Wings of Glory doesn't have a following at our FLGS. It's much easier to get people to play a WWII version of a game they already play than to get them to learn a new (albeit similiar) game.

As for balancing the Hurricane v Bf 109, the Hurricane is slower on the dial but has tighter turns, while the Bf 109 has Agility 3 but Primary 2 (Primary weapon stats being machine guns, the cannons will be secondaries, think HLC) and have a faster dial, but with less turning options.

Wings of Glory is just as Easy to learn as X-Wing. Start the following. The rule book is free online. The older wings of war ww2 minis are harder to find tho. But there is lots available for mid, to late war. NO DICE NEEDED. The weapon/damage colors are on the bases. Itd take exactly 10 minutes to teach the easist version of wings of glory. Its a solid game in its own right. The balancing has been done.
