Is Biggs the luckiest son of a gun?

By Greedyfly, in X-Wing

Is it just me or is Biggs the luckiest son of a gun? I have played against many different builds with him in it, and for all the firepower I have pumped into him he should have gone down like a sack of potatoes far earlier than he has. Credit to my opponents for keeping at the back and all the different tricks that can be down with him, but honestly green dice don't seem as good as when they are getting rolled for him. If only I could have a dollar for all the times he had 2 hits 2 evades , 3 hits 2 evades, 2/3 hits 3/4 evades I would have a small empire of McDonald's burgers.

I'm not saying he is unkillable, far from it, he has just seamed soooooo much luckier than he has rights to be for a guy who's destiny is to go down.

Anyone else have a similar experience ?

Friends used him several times he's never lived beyond the first round with me even with hull upgrades, last game he had the R2 that regens shields but he didn't live long enough to do the needed green move, echo stripped him to one hull and a tie casually finished him off.

It may be that he saves his focus for defense. It helps to play defensively when you KNOW you are the main target.

Play epic. Put EM emitter on a bright hope transport, fly him with a falcon and a couple ships that can pass tokens. Give him R2F2 and stealth device. Force your opponent to attack through your transport while you return fire with your turrets. They have to shoot your transport, which can reinforce for a guarantee of two evades against every attack and it cab repair shields, or attack Biggs with multiple focused seven die defenses.

Lacking in firepower, but troll worthy durability.

He can't be that lucky. He's probably died more than any other non-generic pilot in the game. ;)

And that's why I can't take him. Offensive liability. Rolling naked dice on the attack never amounts to much for me.

Biggs is one of my favorite pilots, he changes the game dynamics so much. Things that Biggs does to a game:

1) Forces your opponent to make bad shots like R3 pot-shot through and asteroid when Wedge is at R1 of that same ship

2) alpha strike squads with missiles don't know who to lock because they don't know if they will get him after the 1st, 2nd or 3rd assault missile fired (if at all this round).

3) Draw their fire, R2-F2 (with assistance from Garven) usually make him last longer than normal continually affecting your opponents target selection

4) an exceptionally well flown Biggs will only be able to be fired upon by about half of your opponents ships in the first engagement dispersing focus fire and meaning hes more likely to be around for longer to disrupt firing patterns.

I really must get one of the new Alt Art versions from the latest tournament pack! Biggs and Echo are my go to ships when building with either Rebels or Imperial respectively.

The last time I fought a list with Biggs, he was the last to die! Don't know that I've ever seen that before...

Heh, that's the main reason I hate Biggs. Not from the perspective of an Empire player, but from a game design standpoint. Taking away choices from your opponent is generally a huge NPE (Negative Play Experience) that just makes people feel worse for losing than they should.

When I lose a game because I made bad decisions, it's one thing. When I lose because a game forces me to make a bad choice, it feels like "Why bother?"

Well, rant over... if you hate Biggs in 100pt games, watch out for him in Epic games. You can easily get him R2-F2, and stacked focus tokens from Garven/Kyle/Comms Boosters. When Rebel Aces comes out, you'll even be able to give him actual evade tokens on top of it!

I'm huge on giving Biggs defensive support to help him live longer. I know he's supposed to die whenever he gets played, but I still don't like it and try to manipulate the circumstances to help him survive.

Sooo, with that in mind, a Biggs support build:

Biggs Darklighter (25)
R2-F2 (3)
Garven Dreis (26)
Tarn Mison (23)
R7 Astromech (2)
Airen Cracken (19)
Swarm Tactics (2)
Total: 100

I think the main reason I like Biggs (and for the same reasons Echo on the imp side) is that the way in which you fly them matter so much.

A poorly flown Biggs (or Echo) will die in a hail of Laser fire in the first round, yet a well flown Biggs at range and with effective defensive support can last well into the game.

I like ships that reward you for flying them well, some ships are just tanky and can be flown at average ability for good results but ships with game changing abilities that effect your opponent are great skill testers, none more so than Carnor Jax. You want him in close for his effect but conversely you typically don’t want to get interceptors in too close because they sometimes just pop.

Dark Curse is another one that impedes your opponent, Ships that change the rules makes the game more diverse rather than just flying at each other throwing dice.

That’s why I love this game even though there are only a relatively small number of units/ships the inter-changeability of upgrades and synergies with pilot abilities means every game is different and exciting.

While certain NPE's can be bad for games (and don't get me wrong Biggs is very, very close to being too good IMHO) they do offer another avenue of design space to expand the game, which I think in the end if done well is more beneficial o the game.

He blew up over the Death Star. That's not very lucky.

Wasn't that Darth Vader thou, a bit of force choke might have helped there

He blew up over the Death Star. That's not very lucky.

My phantom killed him on one go yesterday. Sometimes it is very unlucky, nothing like a R4D6 for those times.

I hate hate hate Biggs. Most annoying pilot, ever! :D

Biggs has the uncanny abitliy to get absolutely murdered in the first round when people invest alot into him, but roll double evades like it's going out of style when he's naked. Same number of shots, realitive positioning, etc.....

Like any dice superstition, it's all in your head tho.

Now that I won the Biggs alt promo card, I feel like I have to play him... His mustache commands me...

I had a match where a friend of mine used him with the shield upgrade and R2-D2 but never really got the chance to use it as he was out of arc most of teh time until one turn where my interceptors and Phantoms focused him down from full to zero.

I actually used biggs (who was at 1 hull) in my last game with my fiance to trigger proximity mines so I could protect Airen. The look on our faces when all three blanks were rolled was priceless.

It's the moustache, clearly.
